Hi my name is Kristian I'm 33 years old (young), I live in Finland and got my first bug when I was 14 years old (we get the driverslicence when we are 18 in Finland). It was a so called "junkyard racer". I lived in the countryside so we had a lot of small dirtroads to "race" on.

This project got its fire started way back in 1984 when I saw the first pictures of the Hebmuller roadster. I've always been interested in old VW beetles and when I finally found the remains of this early -52 split window I just saw it coming. A HOTTED HEBMULLER. :chillin:

Yes I don'n care what the vintage restorers say: "If you go through such much trouble getting original parts to make it original on the outside, why don't you just make it original??" There's one simple answer to that: I don't want to do that.

The split had been unregistered in 1967 and used for reserv parts in other words it was stripped clean. Even the rearwindow had been "saved by a callook freak" many years before me. Luckily the former owner did find the clock for the dashboard.

The car is based on the split floorpan (or the remains of it) and the front and dashboard of the same. This just because in Finland the registration of a car requires the frame and framenumber to be original to get the identity. The heaterchannels I took from a -63 body and strenghtened them with cabriosills. The rear quarterpanels and doors are from a -64 body. (What a mess.. ) No, I've got the most parts together now. the next step is to start on the decklid..

http://www.fvwa.sitefactory.fi/data/192.JPG

I have two front hoods and one pre-52 decklid to work from.

I'll get back as soon as I start to have something to tell or show..

Sadly I have'nt had any major progress on my Hebster because we are building our new house.

We finally can move in so I can start doing some more interesting things...

During the time we were building the house I've been collecting some parts for it.
The latest investment was a Karmann cab frame that I will modify (shorten and chop) to fit my Hebster.
Cab frame (http://fvwa.sitefactory.fi/data/2678.jpg)

I've also started planning for my next project: A type 92 "Geländewagen"....

I'm getting the split -51 in July [:chillin:

This is what I bought in stead of the Choptop. A 1963 Standard beetle.

A Standard beetle means that it doesn't have any chrometrim on the sides, the bumpers are painted, 40's threespoke steering wheel, "crash-box" non-synchromesh gearbox and a lot of other details on early models only.

It is going to go thru a body off total restoration. ( floors and heaterchannels probably needs to be changed). I have not yet brought it home for closer inspection. The interiour will just get some minor fixing and cleaning.

Now, lets update The Hebster with some pics.

Here the original 1952 floorpan and is finally put together and sitting on its own wheels again after about 35 years lying on the belly.

http://medlem.spray.se/hebster52/images/Hebsters%20chassie.jpg

In front I have slightly widened stock 15 inch wheels and in the rear widened stock (split) 16 inch wheels. 6.5 instead of 3.0 inches wide... If you look closely you can also see the double fuellines for the Fuel injection.

Cuttin' up splits you know!! :sawzall: :licklips:

I have also started to work on sheetmetal gloveboxes. I do have an original pair in cardboard and cloth too, but I think the pre-49 look is much cooler. Therefore I have also been searching for a black bakelite dashpod with black knobs. I was lucky to find one on Bug Run 2005 and also a source for the rest of the knobs in black for a reasonable price!!! :dancing:

Update August 4th:

Hmm.. I've got a dilemma...

I can't decide if I should continue my original plans and turn the oval into a split?:Idunno: I think that I didn't get the shape really good for the split, but almost perfect as a minimized oval...

Guess I have to fabricate the splitpost and see how it turns out before I weld it...

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/294184.jpg

I also am pondering wether I should mount the bughead in the rear sticking outunder the reardecklid or in the front sticking out of the front 1/4 panels...:Idunno: Just for looks..:stoned:

I'm planning to mount a set of IDF 36's on then sticking up on both sides of the body. In including exhaust pipes sticking straight up...:chillin:

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/313130.jpg

Then I :sawzall: up the upper edge of the windscreen frame as I thought it looked as a hightower with the standard -74 roof.

I then welded in a new edge 30mm lower by using parts from an other late roof and patched the roof by using the front edge of the roof I cut off my Hebster a couple of years ago.

By lowering the windshieldframe 30mm it now looks like I would have used a split :funny: I think it looks much better and more chopped this way..:sawzall: :welder:

So, finally today after I painted on the watersealant in the bathroom I took me some time to go to the garage and have some fun...

First I took a piece of chipboard and drilled and jigsawed the correct shapes in it. Then I cut out the holes in the sheetmetal slightly smaller.

I simply put the cut chipboard on the floor (I did manage to make room for it on the floor in the garage...:panic: )

Put the sheetmetal over it and used my own weight as a "wice"... and started to hammer the steel..

This is what I had after almost one hour after I drilled the first hole in the chipboard.. It's not perfect but I'm pleased with it. Now it just needs to get to my brother's garage where I have my English wheel so I can shape the surrounding to fit the body.

I had to go to the garage and saw some wood strips for the ceiling in the bathroom so I took the chance and brought the dash to the garage too just for testfitting it for the first time... :funny:

Yesterday I recieved a set of smaller headlightbuckets. The lense size is slighty over 4,5" just would need to find some light that fit in them now...

Ok, I finally got me some time to go to the bro's garage and test out the new smaller headlight buckets. I draw some stripes to make a fake lense for easier visualition... I still feel these might be too small...:Idunno:

I still like these bigger ones better...

Finally got something done!!:dancing: Just got home from the garage and uploaded some photos. (It's 43mins past midnight now...)

Started working on the frame. I use a -62 frametunnel that I have sliced up and will be shortened. I also turned the handbrake handle to point backwards and will bend it up some more and use it as the gearshifter.. :funny:

So I started with the front hood, then I decided that I'd try my first attempt at leadfilling... The hood was washed with a mixture of muriatic acid and orto phosphorous acid.. :panic:

Well, that was not so fun it changed colour to Gold, kind of...

Anyways the leadfilling did work anyhow.

Ok. Here it goes. Someone who's athorized to move posts could make a copy of this post into the How-to-leadfill (http://www.volksrods.com/forum/showthread.php?t=10230) in the Techbin.

First I applied the Etching and let it etch for 10-15 minutes:

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/341568.jpg

Then heated it with the torch so the lead melted and wiped off the excess etching. (dont have a separate picture of that but you see it in the next one too.)

Here I allready have applied the lead onto the areas that need filling:

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/341569.jpg

Here it is spread with a flat tool make out of a strip of White Oak dipped in motoroil.

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/341573.jpg

Here you see the surface after I sanded it. The small dark spots need some more lead as they are lowspots. I started the spreading from there. The tip was much better spread for some reason. :Idunno: :funny:

Here from the front:
Didn't sand the front tip yet as I couldn't find the suitable sized tool last night... :yelling:

I thought as the body became a split that it needed a correct decklid...

I'll see if I'm able to go back to the garage later tonight and finish the welds... :welder: :welder: :Idunno:

DAMN!!!:dancing: :dancing: :dancing: :clapping: :chillin: :dancing: :dancing:

Me and my brother started the 8hp B&S engine for the first time tonight!! And it did start and even ran pretty well!!!! :dancing: :dancing:

I seem to have scored a working engine:bow:

Damn what a sound without silencer!!! :chillin: :chillin:
Me and my brother didn't need any beer just got a kick out of the sound from it!!! :dancing: Almost like a Harley! Or a 1/8 flathead V8... :funny: :licklips:

It will be so cool running around the Bugrun 07 show area with it!!!:funny:

http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/346438.jpg

Also started to mockup the engine in the body. Almost there. If the weekend goes as planned I will have the engine with frame welded in, and if I'm really lucky even the rearwheels on!
http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/346440.jpg

Got the frontaxle mount welded.  I also decided to use the stock beetle steeringnuckle, just :sawzall: , bent and:welder: the steeringarm to make it fit.... Not much room there...

Worked on the exhaust design yesterday..

You begin to see the idea and shape of the complete drivetrain... :chillin:

I cut up an old exhaust that I had lying around. The Y-part will connect to the tubes on the both heads... :funny:

Exhaust finished last weekend. Sounds like a bug engine without silencer!!!:dancing:
Also shortened the driveaxles by 12 inches.. which made them finally 5 inches...
http://www.fvwa.sitefactory.fi/data/2887.JPG

Yesterday I cut off the bearinghousing from the donor IRS trailingarms and adapter early brakedrums to them. Made them work by "CNC" machining a half an inch slice of the late 4-lug drums axle snout for use as a spacer inside the drums. Got them mounted togehter and now waiting for the weekend so I can weld everything onto the Lawnmower frame and body.

Tested the whole drivetrain today. Lifted the rearwheels off the ground just to see the speed on the wheels. Too lazy to calculate the gear ratios.. :funny:

Couldn't yet drive it as the steeringbox and steeringwheels are not yet fitted...

Finally welded the front quarterpanels.

I guess I have a lot of other mixed projects in this thread so I'll just post it up here...

Been thinkin about making a soapbox racer for the kids as the first attempt went out of hand from the beginning...

Here is my first mockup in 1:6 scale.

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f98/Hebster52/Misc%20pictures/DSC_2717.jpg

Finished the fullscale drawing today. Just need to do the X-sections now too and then I can start making the skeleton for the body... Not that I know when I will find the time for it though... :Idunno::funny:
