Hey all,
My name is Rob and I live in Campbell Ca. I have a 1972 standard bug which once I have a little (a lot!) bit of time, will somehow become the Hotrod Heb! My parents first got this bug in 1973 and then I bought it from them when I was 16. Holy crap, I have owned this bug for almost half of my life. It has been in the family since I was four! For the slower people out there, that makes me 33.
I am still trying to decide on the roadster version, the coupe version or a lift off top. style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wacko.gif
I also have a 1956 European bug that I will be building for my son who just turned five, so I have plenty of time for that one. I also have a daughter that is almost 2. In my spare time, I am also remodeling our house room by room. (Now you guys know why I don't have time to work on my bug yet
On a side note, my latest toy is a 2003 Ford F250 Crew Cab V10 4x4 truck.

Well, it all started when alltypesvw said that he needed a rear apron for his bug. I thought to myself... Self, you have an apron that you will not need, it just needs to be cut off. So, this afternoon, I broke out the sawzall and cut that fucker off.
http://img72.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Rear%20end%20day%20one/PICT1405.jpg
After cutting the apron off, I decided to see how that hood will line up with the rear end. So I took the sawzall to the hood and split that sucker in two. Things were lining up really nice, so I decided to fire up the mig and do a few spot welds to hold that sucker in place.

Damn! it's starting to look like something!!!

I got the second half of the rear hood tacked on, did a bunch of welding and put a dummy motor in it to check clearances. (It barely fits, but it fits!!!)

Here are a few pics from today. The two halves of the rear hood are welded together! It still needs a bit of welding, but it is going better after my visit to PraxAir this afternoon! (Upgraded to a bigger gas tank and picked up an autodarkening helmet!!!)

Got some more welding done this week. Most of the back area is all welded up solid now. I did a bit of grinding where the rear "Hood" was welded to the quarter panel and even shot a bit of primer.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo/VolkstruckRedo1001.jpg
And then with a little bit of beatin', bangin', cuttin' and Weldin', we ended up with this...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo/VolkstruckRedo1034.jpg
When I got the truck from ButcherWill, the windshield had been chopped about 4 inches, and today I cut out another 3-1/2 inches! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Dancing.gif After Justin left for the day, I stayed out in the garage and relocated the moon tank back under the front hood. Not an easy feat considering that the car has been channeled about 4 inches! The filler neck clears the hood by about 1/2"! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/eek1.gif
The fun will continue tomorrow!
Hey Justin D. Come on by tomorrow unless your afraid we will take the sawzall to your bug! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/funny.gif

Well we had another productive day today! Justin came over again and so did the other Justin. Most of the old paint and bondo are now gone thanks to the Justin duo!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Day%202/VolkstruckRedo3007.jpg
I was working on the old model A truck bed most of the day. This bed is about 75 years old, so it is going to take a bunch of work. This portion of the bed floor had a big rust hole and it was easier to replace the whole section.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Day%202/VolkstruckRedo3004.jpg
I also had to basically rebuild this corner of the bed.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Day%202/VolkstruckRedo3008.jpg
And I think I will try and tackle this spot tomorrow... (This is the top side of the last picture!)

Well Justin D.(vwcalbug) and myself just spent the day working on the truck! Justin started taking the paint and other shit off of the model A bed, and did a bunch of weld grinding. I took some sheetmetal strips and bent a 90 at the bottom and filled in the old running board strip. This additional metal visually lowers the car and kinda looks like a belly pan!

Here is what I got accomplished this weekend...
You guessed it... More Bondo!
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Day%207/5-10-05Volkstruckupdate001.jpg
Probably one more skim coat and this side will be ready as well! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Dancing.gif
And I put the steering back together and bolted in the tank...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Day%207/5-10-05Volkstruckupdate003.jpg
I was all intent on starting the engine on Saturday, but the piece of fuel line that I had was about 8" too short! I was too dusty with Bondo dust to get into the big truck or the minivan, (and I wasn't about to Run to Kragens - who would want to run???) and I was too tired. But on the way home from work today, I stopped and got some fuel line and some clamps and hooked the sucker up! I had to crank it for a little while to get fuel through the line. (Remember, when Will built the car the tank was in the pickup bed. The line through the tunnel hasn't been used for a couple of years!) But then the sucker fired right up! That is when I remembered that Justin Sr. still has one of my spark plug wires on the Dayzchopper! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/yelling.gif Hell, it ran pretty good and idled perfectly for only running on three cylinders!!!
Bug-O-Rama is just a few short weeks away!

Well I have added updates to the main board, but i keep forgetting to update this page! So here is the latest and greatest update yet! (I will add some of the other updates here later.)
Well it has been a long, long, long weekend! You all saw my update from Saturday a few posts ago, and here is what Justin Jr., my neighbor Ryan and myself got accomplished on Sunday.
Here is the truck a little after 8:00 A.M. Sunday morning:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/5-22-05VolkstruckRedo001.jpg
My neighbor Ryan owns a body shop, and first he shot several layers of Evercoat Featherfill 2 and a quick guide coat of black:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/5-22-05VolkstruckRedo026.jpg
We then pulled it into the shop and Justin Jr. and I did a bunch of block sanding while Ryan was painting a customers car:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/5-22-05VolkstruckRedo028.jpg
[I](P.S. that is a bagged 1940 Ford convertible in the background!)
Here is what it looked like after the dust settled:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/5-22-05VolkstruckRedo034.jpg
Then we pulled it back into the heated downdraft booth and added a couple quarts of this:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/5-22-05VolkstruckRedo045.jpg
And here is the finished product at around 6:00 P.M.:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/5-22-05VolkstruckRedo057.jpg
I then spent the rest of the night putting almost everything back together! There are a couple of trim pieces on the dash that I need clips for and I still need to put the handle on the hood.
I drove the volkstruck to work today!!! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Dancing.gif (after dropping Spencer off at school!)
The rest of the pictures can be found in my Final Day Gallery (http://photobucket.com/albums/v218/causeydesigns/Volkstruck%20Redo%20Final%20Day/)
I want to take this time to thank the people who helped to make this project such a wonderful experience:
Justin Beck (Dayzwalker)
Justin Daugherty (vwcalbug)
Ryan Wight - Nor Cal Autoworks
I also want to thank my wonderful wife Tiffany, my son Spencer and my daughter Rachel for putting up with all the noise and dust from the garage! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif
Without you guys, I would still be sanding instead of enjoying the roadster on a beautiful California day! style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bowdown.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bowdown.gif style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/bowdown.gif
And thank you to everyone on this board that has offered moral support. Seeing some of the work that other people were doing out there (Walt, Steve, Pete, Nick, Dan, and a multitude of others) has kept me motivated to work on the truck instead of sitting on the couch!

Well shit, I have not done anything on my intro for about a year and a half!
Alot has happened since then...
Did a crap load of body work on Jeff's Ghia.
Doing a crap load of work on Cobey's Ghia.
Renovated a kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom, hallway and now a living room for the inlaws.
And finally about a week ago, I traded cars with PerformanceJunky...
So now, he has taken over the volkstruck and I am driving this....
