hey. here's my intro. i've been a 'rodder at heart for a while. i think i've figured out why. more on that later. anyway, i've been a member on the stf forum for a while. so, here's my story. i've been into vw's for a long, long time. i still own every vw i've ever bought, never sold one of them. ok, so i only have 3. here they are:
a '63 notchback. plans are to give it the 'rod look. flat paint, stripped down, no frills. it currently has a stock motor with a '68 pan. i just picked up some pedrini rims for it. i'm going to sandblast them and i think that will go with the flat paint well.
a '68 squareback. all stock. i bought it when i was 17 for $100. currently no motor. has no pan. hmmmm wonder where that went. i'm not sure what i'm going to do with this one.
a '69 squareback. it has '67 euro fenders with sidemarkers. chopped 3.5 inches. big window in back (c pillar cut out. under construction. i'm really thinking about turning this into a roadster. no top. and i'd like to replace the dash with one from a bus as well as the front window.
a ?? sandrail. oregon has some of the best dunes in the usa!
oh, my name is phillip and i'm an alcoholic. :funny: glad to be with you guys. you all complete me.
i'm in southern oregon currently, but i do tons of work in portland. i'm an art director and believe it or not i'm working on the redesign of microsoft.com. i've worked for lots of clients including: adidas, nike, levi's, salomon, bonfire, disney, nissan, mci(long time ago), intel, xerox and microsoft (wish it were Apple. )
that's my story, and i'm sticking to it.

damn, i update this about as often as i work on my car...
hmmm, i guess that's the point.
well, my '69 is now a speedster. no top. i found a bus dash, and it needs to be welded in.
i'm thinking about a voodoo theme for this car. does a car need a theme? tatooed skull shift knob - that's where i'll start.

Few old pics of my '69
This is what it looked like before I bought my first saw-zall:

Some pics after it was mostly tacked together:

I need to post some more recent pics. I screwed up some of the roof, so it's now a speedster. If I were to do it again, I think I'd leave the roof intact. I quartered it, which is really difficult to get back together.
So, that's my '69 speedster. I'll look for some old pics of my Notchback.

This is a car that I am trying to model mine after. Actually the first car that was my inspiration for my speedster was the safari window Squareback that was in VW Trends, I think it was Feb. '87. That car was friggin' cool. A little pimp, but that's ok.
Those were the days, back when VW Trends didn't suck as hard.
Anyway, I found this pic, and I'm going to do the Bus dash swap. I have a Bus dash, and I just need some &^%$ time...
http://www.volkshaus.com/images/typ3/type3_vert/20446.jpg
I'm not going to do the safari windows, I'm going to use my windshield frame, which is chopped already.
Here's another pic:

Damn! A Bus dash just looks sooooo right in a Type 3.

Oh, here's the other car that was/is the inspiration for my speedster:
http://www.volkshaus.com/images/typ3/type3_vert/square_roadster.jpg
I thought about that type of a windshield, but I decided against it. I guess they are a little dangerous, since they don't hold back flying objects as well as a full frame. Normally I wouldn't worry about safety, but with two young kids, my parental mentality overrides my James Dean ideolgy, "Live fast, die young, and leave a beautiful corpse".
Anyway, that's my idea. I'll try to post new pics and some drawings soon...

It's a little more minitrucker than what I remember, but still had some killer ideas. Damn, paint it flat black, and add some different wheels, oh, and some flames. That's what I'm gunna do. I'll do some other stuff too, but that'll be the idea. I'm thinkin' about a carson top too. Hmmmm.

I've been distracted from my street cars, but have been working on my sandrail for a bit. I've installed and fabricated motor mounts into the engine cage for a 2.3l EFI Turbo Ford motor.

I've been gathering parts for my Square project for a while... I now have all off the parts that I need to perform some of the mods. I have an early bus dash, early bug headlight buckets, and a new windshield frame top from a doaner Square. I'm hoping to work on the speedster when the weather gets better.
Oh, and I have enough funds to build a my motor for the Notch Rat. Stay tuned for more info on this.

Here is a concept for the Notch Rat: Stock wheels, no caps, fat tires in the back, skinny up front. Keepin' the paint all faded for now. I think I'll clear coat it with some satin.

I have the hood on my speedster mostly done. I cut out the bump that holds the VW emblem, and flattened it out, and rewelded it back in. I also pulled the ridge in the center of the hood to a nice point. Looks pretty good. I have some more minor welding to do, and some finish work on the metal, then onto some body putty. I'll try to post pics soon.
Next up is the bus dash. I'm going to fill everything in, and figure out how to mount the pods. I'm basically using the rear tail light housings from a 65-67 Type 3. These will be in the center, and hold guages. I originally wanted some hood pods, but I think this idea will work out better. I've seen some muscle cars like this (Corvette?).

I'll have to update this now that the blog ain't workin'...
My primary focus right now is the 2332 EFI motor that I'm working on for my Rat Notch.
So far my case is all machined for 94s and the 84mm crank
I have my DRD Stage 5 heads
EFI computer is reprogrammed by CB Performance
1 5/8 uncoated header purchased with a dynomax muffler
Crank, rods, flywheel, clutch/pressure plate is all balanced

Still waiting to get my 2332 to a long block. My engine builder is moving, he's sold his shop and has another shop he is moving into. Hopefully in the following weeks we'll get back to it.
One of the ideas I've been thinking about is cutting down my throttle bodies to have more room in a Type 3 engine bay. Cutting them isn't the problem, it's trying to find a highly competent person to weld them back together and have them remachined. I'm trying to find someone local. I may need to send them out.

Good weekend for the Rat Notch. I spent Saturday welding on a new receiver hitch on the front of my dad's trailer. Towed it over to my cousin's place to use the big welder. Welded up a few pieces of angle vertically to place the 2" receiver into place. Got it tacked in, and welded up. This kept me busy most of the morning Saturday.
Gave my other cousin a call to let him know that I welded up a receiver on the front of dad's trailer, and asked if I could borrow his Warn wench. He said, "You welded up a 1" receiver? The wench is mounted on a 1 inch receiver tube"
D'oh! Took a trip down to the trailer parts store to see if they make an adapter, thankfully they did. Picked that up and brought it over to my cousin's place to pick up the wench and everything fit together fine.
I kinda wished I would have mounted the receiver further toward the front of the trailer, but it will work.

My engine builder had some cool springs to keep the lifters in place. I really wish I had a pic of that. O-rings added to the 6 case studs. Special German sealant added between the case halves. Cam plug in. One thing to note is that Dan likes to start tightening the two cam studs first on the case.

Spent the eve at the shop cutting out the old rear engine hanger mount that was fubared. I started out trying to zap out the spot welds, but ended up using an air cutter. Hopefully I can get the replacement in, and aligned up OK.
Plan is to take the 1835 I have down to the shop tomorrow and get the rear main seal in. Hopefully I can run the motor on the engine stand to see what else it may need.

Got the old 1835 that I had in my garage running on the engine test stand Friday!! I had a bad rear main seal, so I pulled the pressure plate, clutch and flywheel and replaced the rear main seal and flywheel o-ring. Got everything back together, and changed out the custom sandrail exhaust for the old trusty S&S header that I had. Added a new mechanical fuel pump, and she fired up after a bit! Had a little trouble getting the fuel to the carbs, but now she runs! I have to do a little tune up on the old girl; need plugs, wires, points, condensor and a cap. Oh, checked the valves, and they didn't need any adjustment.
I'm going to plug that into the Notch for the interim. Will get back to the 2332 this weekend. My engine builder has finals this week. I thought he said last week...
Anyway, I'll plug in the motor in the next few days. I'm contemplating switching out the pan, since the body is off right now...

Made some good progress on the Rat Notch this last weekend.
Friday:
Let's see, got new plugs, wires, cap and rotor on the crusty 1835 GEX motor. Motor bolted to the trans.
New master cylinder bolted in, ran a new hard line from the MC to the rear junction. New soft lines in the rear.
Welded part of the pan that has the pedal block on it. This area was cracked from stress.
The cool old-school Rivieras that I had wouldn't clear the front caliper! I ended up switching the new tires to the Porsche 2.0 liter wheels that I have. Not quite the look I wanted, but still 70s era. Need to get rid of the black paint, and see how it looks with that area unpolished.
At about midnight or so, we placed the body back on the pan. Most of the pan bolts are on...
Saturday:
Finished up the brakes. Mounted two Willwood brake fluid reservoirs and ran lines to the master cylinder. Ran lines to from the fuel tank to the hard line in front and mounted the tank.
Oh, had a new key made for the ignition. The other broke off...
Started working on the wiring. Switched out the voltage requlator from a 6v to a 12v. Finally figured out that the old wiring bypassed the voltage requlator... Gotta love people who are wiring "experts."

Minor progress and setbacks yesterday.
Had bad starter, so we replaced that with a new hi-torque starter that I had bought for my sand rail. Starter works!!
Had trouble with the ignition switch. It seems to be bad. So, as an alternative, we will use a push button switch. I need to pick one up.

Soooo... Last Friday I drove the Rat Notch!!!!
I worked on the wiring for most of the evening. I have two head lights, two front running lights and a left tail light. Just need to fix the right tail and figure out what's goin' on with the brake lights. Oh, and need some turn signals...
I ended up having a missing ignition switch. Part of it anyway. So I have a toggle switch for the power to the coil, and a push button starter until I can fix the ignition switch.
My friend Ethan helped me out with the brakes. We bleed the crap out of them. I think there's still some air in the line, but we'll get them dialed in.
Motor is running kinda funky. Coughs and sputters. The throttle is sticky too. But she runs!!!!

A little update. Had a few issues other than the tires. I have the different tires until I can switch to short axles.
I had a weird arcing problem with my coil. It was positioned too close to the fuel pump, and the wire was arcing to the fuel pump housing. Got that fixed. Coil is in the stock location.
The big issue was the engine compartment, and the dual Dells not having enough room. I thought I made enough room for the fuel banjo fittings, but totally forgot about the accelerator pump linkages on both carbs. Turns out that these were hitting the side of the engine bay, and I broke both sides of linkages!! This sucked.
So, I've since then cut the hell out of the engine bay, and have tons of room now. This will be good for the throttle bodies and their fuel rails that will eventually go into the Rat Notch.
I've borrowed some linkages from a friend, and that's fixed. My friend Ethan rebuilt one carb, and we need to rebuild the other.
So, that's where the Rat Notch stands... needing one carb to be rebuilt.

Judas Priest... I haven't updated this in a looooong time. I've rebuilt the other carb. The Notch is drivable, but I need to get a new title and license for it... I still need to do a bunch of small stuff to it. Wiring needs help. I only have a tail light and brake light on the driver side. No blinkers...
I just ordered the rocker assemblies for the 2332... It's been almost two years in he making of this motor. Damn I hate waiting for other people...

I swear I have the worst luck building my 2332. I ordered rockers from Scat a while ago. Well, they've been on back order forever. I decided to cancel that order, and bought some from DRD Racing Heads. They should ship out next week. Hopefully.
My Notch is sitting without carbs right now. I had borrowed some accelerator pump linkages from a friend, but he needed them back. So now I need to order some from CB - they're for the 40 DRLA Dell'Ortos.
Not much else going on. It's been to cold to work on any thing in the garage...

Finally makin' some progress on the 2332 for my Notch! My rocker assemblies are here from DRD. I started to figure out my push rod length. I ended up with about .485" of lift on Saturday. But, I think I may have had the swivel feet adjusters a too far out. I'll double check this on Monday.
And I have my own work bench and engine stand at the shop I share! It's pretty dang cool!

I've actually made more progress. All the push rods are cut. Thanks to my friend David @ Bug Boys Classic VWs! Rocker assemblies are all in place too.
Spent last Saturday doing a few things. Got the tin mostly trimmed up. The 3/4 side fit perfect. The 1/2 side needed some trimming to fit the aluminum case, by the bellhousing flange. I have one small area that I need to figure out what to do where the tin is hitting part of the head on the 1/2 side. After that, just need to straighten a little here and there, and I think I need to weld up one or two small cracks.
Got my 1 5/8 exhaust on after having to cut at the no. 2 port. The motor is a little longer than stock. I think I have a .060 shim at the head, and a .060 on the bottom of the cylinder. If memory serves. I cut and rewelded to get 2 and 3/4 to fit. 1 just needed a BFH to work. It's on! Looks good too! The only thing left on the exhaust is to weld in the O2 bung after the collector.
Started working on the oil pump. My friend Jeff helped me out. I had to clearance for the cam gear bolts. Lots of grinding and testing. I had to leave a little earlier than expected, but I think I got it. Will hit it again this Friday after work.
I'll post pics as soon as I can resize them...

The oil cooler is now installed. I'm using a Type 1 cooler. And using the Type 1 sender area.
Oil pump was installed. I did a final check on my clearancing with some dye. No interference. Used some cool sealing nuts. I need to find out what they're called. They're typically used as the 12 big case nuts too.
The fuel injection wiring was a mess. Had to remove a ton of electrical tape to inspect all the wiring. I had to replace one GM weather pack connector in the fuel injection harness, and repair two wires. Otherwise it looks good. I will also replace the two relays, so that I know they're OK.
Picked up and installed all the full-flow fittings (Push Loc and -8 fittings) that I got from Parker <--- love this shop. After two trips... I finally got all the plumbing that I needed.
Clearanced the rear engine carrier that I'm using to hold the oil filter and hang the muffler from.
My friend Ethan stopped by after he was done with work on Monday and got the push-pull linkage to work! It clears the MSD distributor and opens the throttle bodies wide open! Does not hit anything.
Got the breather stand on. Got the fuel pump block off on.
Distributor doesn't turn a lot, hopefully it's close to where it needs to be. It does hit the shroud when turning. May need to get one of those cool dash-mount timing controllers for it...
Got stuck on the fan. Couldn't get it to fit this odd crank. I need to get a sand paper flapper disk to clean it out inside really well. This crank has been consistently out .010 - had a heck of a time getting rod bearings to work.
Oh, started working on the hard lines for the fuel rails. Got 4 -6 fittings to run AN stuff. Will run aluminum hard lines to all the fuel rails.

Spent some more time this last Saturday on the wiring. Got the MSD box and distributor mostly wired in with the EFI loom. I have a power and ground wire to hook up on the MSD box. And one wire that runs from a relay to the fuel pump. Also a ground and power wire for the EFI computer along with a switched wire.
Also fabricated a simple aluminum bracket for the oil filter mount. Harrisen, my son, made this. Looks pretty good! I'm using the later model rear engine carrier to hold the oil filter mount and on the other side I'm going to use for a muffler hanger.

** NEW pics added in the first post**
Some more work done this weekend. Spent time both Saturday and Sunday at my friend David's shop.
FINALLY got my fan on the *&^%$ crank. If ya'll remember, this crank was machined over on all the journals. And apparently the pulley (or fan on a Type 3) surface was as well. Had a hell of a time getting bearings to fit. So I used a flapper wheel to hone the fan out a little. After a long, long time I finally got it to fit on, not after realizing the outside was actually hitting the back half of the fan shroud! I fixed this with the flapper wheel as well.
After the fan was on, I was able to get the second half of the shroud on, then the pulley shroud. I had to clearance the hole for the alternator, since it had a flange-like area that interfered with the small alternator. The alternator I'm using is from the DDB (http://www.theddb.com) in Portland.
As you can see, there isn't any room between the alternator and the distributor. This is my next issue to resolve. I'm still not quite sure how to do this. Hope to get some time in this weekend to sort it out.

Got a little more work done this weekend. Didn't get as much work done as I would have liked. I've been distracted by a big masonry project on the side of my house.
Anyway, started working on the fuel line. I'm using 3/8" steel tubing for my fuel with -6AN fittings. Picked up a 37 degree flare tool last Friday. It's really nice! Also picked up a sweet Weller soldering gun.
Started to put together my CB breather box. Also mounted the coil, and ran some coil wires from the MSD box. I had forgot about these! I keep working on my wiring. Every time I think I'm close, I find something else.
I also put the sump plate on, but I forgot to take a pic!
Some pics:
3/8" fuel line running to the fuel rails on the throttle bodies. The coil is mounted, but I haven't added the connectors to the end of the wires yet. You can also see that I need to tap the head for the temp sender for the EFI.

This is a pretty good shot of the fuel line. I had to make a few bends to go around the distributor and center pivot for the throttle body linkage. I'm going to add the fuel regulator on the 1/2 side. I've taken off the alternator, until I can fix the clearance issue with the distributor.

Some more progress on the 2332! I now have the flywheel, clutch and pressure plate on.
Week before last I tapped the fuel pressure regulator for 1/4" NPT so that I could use some -06 JIC fittings on the inlet and outlet. I also tapped the regulator for the vacuum fitting that I bought.
This last weekend I finished up all the hard line for my fuel system. Also fixed all the wires in the fuel injection loom. Had to replace one of the WeatherPac connectors that was broken. I really like these connectors, would love to get the real tool to crimp these. I ended up using some really small needle nose pliers to crimp all individually what a pain!
Still have a few small things to work on: hook up the fuel pump temporarily for the engine stand break-in, add valve covers (may need to add a bung to the top of each one for the breather hoses), tap the 3/4 head for the EFI temp sender, set the timing and probably a few more things...
I'll try to post some new pics this week.

Made a ton of progress Friday night. My friend Ethan helped fix the old vacuum hole on my fuel regulator. This resolved the last issue on my fuel system. Basically, I converted the fuel regulator to -06AN (JIC).
A few days ago (week ago?) my friend David helped me (meaning he did it, and I watched) tap the 3/4 head for the EFI temp sender. While I had the tins off to do this, I clearanced the 1/2 head fin to make the cylinder tin fit a lot better.
David came up with a pretty brilliant solution to my dilemma of where/how to place the gigantic sending unit for the Auto Meter oil pressure gauge. Ended up using a T off the typical Type 1 placement of the sending unit. Using a T with one male end and two female, running vertically, an idiot light sending unit was placed on top and the Auto Gauge sending unit was placed on the bottom. The bottom sending unit fits perfect in the space that's made by the cooling tin/cylinder head/cooling shroud/case. A little clearancing was needed to fit the tin up against the T.
Once all the tin was back on and all the injection system was reinstalled, all that was needed was to place the motor on the test stand and finish some temp electrical and test the fuel system. All the electronics (ECU, MSD box and assorted relays and fuse box) were placed on a table. All power leads were hooked up to the battery, including a switched lead to the ECU. Also all grounds were mated to the battery.
The fuel system was set up temporarily on the stand running a feed line from the tank to a few filters, to the fuel pump, to the fuel hard line running from the 3/4 side throttle body, to the 1/2 side throttle body, to the fuel regulator and back to the tank via a line sitting in the filler neck.
Now, to test the fuel line for leaks we need to power up the injection wiring. Power connected and no fuel pump action! After going through the wiring checking for anything obvious, even switching the two relays, nothing looks wrong! Well, we decided to run the pump direct, and get fuel. A quick adjustment of the pressure regulator and we have about 45lbs!
At this point I added the Scat stainless steel valve covers I picked up at BOR. These things rock and don't leak!
So, it's time to see if she'll start! Crank, crank, spit, sputter. Turn dizzy a litte more. crank, cough, almost starts. A little more turn. BAM she starts up! http://sovw.org/evo/modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_razz.gif It's now running and quickly is moved up to about 2000 RPMs with a few twists of the idle screws. We're all in pretty much amazement at this point. My 2332 is actually running on the test stand. A few drops of oil land on the floor after a while, but it seems to be coming from a tapped holes in the breather box that aren't plugged (this was probably my job. http://sovw.org/evo/modules/Forums/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif ). Every thing seems to be OK, but it's running a like it's only on a 3 cylinders. I think it was my friend Derek that noticed that number 3 cylinder seemed to not work. Evidenced by the non-discoloration of the header coming out of the head. The other 3 cylinders were turning the header some nice shades of blue and purple, but number 3 is still the same steel color. After a certain point we shut down the motor (about 20 minutes).
After checking everything, including switching both injectors, switching wiring to the two injectors, pulling the plugs, checking for spark (really good spark BTW), noticing that number 3 spark plug looked like it just came out of the box, checking both 3/4 for compression (170/175 on both), my friend Jeff finally noticed that number 4 cylinder butterfly was open a little more than number 3. He then realized that the throttle shaft was twisted on this throttle body. After a bit of me watching Jeff (see the theme there?) twist the throttle shaft with a plier on each end (all end nuts. linkage and washers removed) it was really close to factory straight.
We then removed the push pull linkage and synched up all throttle bodies, and adjusted the linkage after. Once this was all done, I pushed go on the stand and it ran like a fricken champ!! The 3 side of the header was definitely turning blue/purple tones like the rest.
Ran it for a little longer and shut her down. I have a few things to wrap up here and there, but this engine is broken in!!!!!
How cool is that??
My motor runs!!

Update: My fuel rail is back from the welder and most of the fuel system is set on the motor. Last Friday my son and I worked on getting a bunch of work done. After cuttin' and hackin' up the engine bay, we finally got the motor in. It's a lot different configuration than the original 1500 single sidedraft motor! We also got the remote oil cooler mounted up above the trans. Still need to run the final oil lines to the engine. We also ran all the electronics to the inside of the car via the heater duct in the body. Need to fabricate the final mounting space in under the back seat. Just received a call that my fuel line and fittings are in. Need to pick these up and get the rest of the fuel system in place.

Long overdue for an update! Well, actually not much to update. I still have my oil cooler leak. Just haven't had time to fix it. I ended up having to move from my shared shop space a while back. And had to move a lot of stuff!!
So, I now have a very cool shop/storage space that is 1900sf! How cool is that? I'm in the process of moving some more of my cars down to the space to make the wifey happy. Still need to move two Fastys and the Pigalle Variant. Then, I should have time to work on the Notch.
Oh, I now finally have my own engine stands. Ended up buying two. One bench and one floor stand. They both look like this one, but the second does not have the bench mount attachment:

Whoohooo! I got my sandrail motor running on Wednesday! I have some more work to do, there isn't any coolant in the cooling system, but I will fix that tonight. But it runs!!! I can't believe that I got the whole EFI wiring set up properly! Amazing!

OK, drove the sandrail!! Man, the 2.3l EFI Turbo motor is pretty fun. It would be a great motor for a volksrod!
I have one small clutch / pressure plate issue to fix tonight, but that's it! Super easy fix.
I also finished installing the big hitch! 17,000lbs capacity!! I could carry every VW I own!!
I'll post some pics soon...

A few updates: Got the clutch fixed on the rail, and took it to the coast. Something was wrong with the charging system. So, I bought a new alternator, and got it all fixed, then the motor crapped out!! Looking into this...
I got a FREE '70 Baja! The plan is to pull all the cool parts off of the rail and use them on the Baja. Will be nice to have something to drive on the street and to an offroad location. Perhaps it could be turned into a volksrod, someday...

Earlier this year I scored this rear disc brake set up for my '63 Rat Notch. I'm going to convert it to IRS. And, this one has an ebrake!!

Not much else to report. We're working on Notched Jr's '70 Baja, slowly. Need to finish the back half of the cage. The plan is to convert an old Type 3 motor to a Type 1 upright. I have all the tin, and some nice polished tall IDF manifolds. Just need to get a Type 1 alternator. Would be nice if I had the one I gave away!

After work on Friday the 4th, I headed down to the shop to work on the Baja with Harrisen and his friend Tyler. Got down there and no kids. I guess they got hungry and found a pizza birthday party to crash. While I was at the shop, my friend Derek showed up. We ended up making a short list of needs, mostly hardware and set out to find food, hardware and things neither of us really needed at the auto parts store. After driving from store to store, with a stop for some grub, we ended up back at the shop.
Harrisen and Tyler were there and anxiously awaiting orders. We finished running fuel lines and set up a custom fuel tank. It's definitely a one-off. Man, Derek has some mad-skills when it comes to fabrication!! We then mounted a temp coil to the firewall, partially hidden behind the fan shroud. The next task was to run some minimal electrical wiring to get the motor running. We also placed a battery in the tray area and wired it up. Installed the new starter, and some dork wired it wrong... :funny: Fixed that. Who knew the trigger wire was on the opposite side... The final task was to fix some linkage issues. Again, some dork set up the linkage incorrectly. :funny: The last task was to fix the accelerator pump linkages. Both sides were broken. I ordered all of the parts to fix each side, but the small nylock nuts were NLA. So we used one used one from the old linkage, and robbed another from the Cabrio Weber. On one side while taking off the accelerator pump diaphragm, we discovered that one of the springs was missing... And no replacement to be found. But we pressed on...
At the wee hours of the morning we began the process of starting the motor. We primed the carbs several times with fuel down into the bowl. Did you know that fuel melts small plastic shot glasses??? :funny: At first, we couldn't get any spark, but eventually this issue was resolved. Thanks again to Derek. He pulled the points and reset them. I'm not sure what fixed it exactly, but I'm sure the points did. Then, the timing was a little off. Well, way off actually. So Derek checked to see where the distributor should be clocked and got it close. After cranking and cranking we noticed that the clutch cable was really hot. I mean REALLY hot, smoking the grease that was on it. Again, some dork forgot to put on the ground strap from the body to the trans. :funny: Eventually it popped a few times. Not quite getting enough fuel... It was discovered that the custom fuel tank needed a custom vent. So, Derek loosened the cap on the Gaterade bottle. (Remember those mad-skills??) :funny: Once we did this and a lot more cranking, it eventually came to life!! At 3am on Saturday morning!
It's ALIVE!!!

Time for a looooooong overdue update. Finally fixed my oil leak! Also, did some mods that Ive been thinking about for a while.
Fri/Sat
Pulled motor. On stand. Pulling off 3/4 cylinder tin to get to the oil cooler and seals.

My old cooler seals were cracked and I probably over tightened the bolts.

I replaced them with new seals. And torqued the bolts down to 6-8lbs.

Everything back together.

While the motor was out. My son Harrisen (whos 16 and an AWESOME welder) and I fabricated a pseudo Kafer brace and a mid mount. I was really worried about flex in the frame horns. Im not currently running the rear mount because the part on the body was really mangled by the PO. Eventually I will replace this and have another part reduce engine/trans flex.
Mid mount (Im only using 2 studs for now, I will use 4 eventually when I update this.

For my frame horn bracing, I used 1.000 tubing with a .120 sidewall. Very sturdy stuff. Ive used it to make mini-sandrail frames and secondary framing on full-size sandrails.

On Sunday, I hooked up all of the electrical and fuel lines. Had some issues with my MSD loom. Had one connector that pulled apart, fixed that. Had the tach connector pull out. Fixed that connector.
Also, had an issue with my MSD distributor. It wasnt seated properly. Fixed that. Had an issue with my ground strap to the body, pulled it, and cleaned the paint, er, rust off, and that was fixed.
Then she fired up! Set the timing. Timing was off before. At about 7 degrees at idle now. Not sure what total advance is. I had the wrong type of light for that.
I have a weird flat spot at about 2200-2500rpm. I thought it was timing, but Im pretty sure its the fuel injection. I need to call CB Performance and see if they have any ideas...
Next up is front shocks, fix my passenger door hinge, seat belts, ignition switch, lights.
Oh, almost forgot, new rear tires!

Harrisen and I were cruising pretty well on the Baja a few weekends ago. Picked up the correct oil seals (don't ask!), a few new drive flange seals for the trans, CV boots and some other stuff from the import part store. We cruise down to the shop, pull the motor, pull the oil cooler off and install a Type 3 cooler so that we have a sending unit for oil pressure. Start to put that back together, and the fan locks up everytime we tighten everything down... kinda stumped there.
So, switch gears and take the used axles and CVs and task Harrisen's friend Tyler to taking them apart and cleaning them in the tank. Once they're all clean, I direct Harrisen to put the boots on the axles and then add the CVs. I'm working on other stuff, and he says that they don't fit. The boot flange is too small for the CVs... So, I think that we bought the wrong boots. But then, it hits me, the used axles and CVs are Type 4! D'oh!! So, we then start assembling another set of axles and CVs that I had that had one bad CV, and that's where we stand. Need to get one CV...
While up in Eugene/Springfield this last weekend (3 hours North), we also purchased a bunch of stuff that was needed like window rubber (still need a windshield) and other goodies.
I have a few phone pics that I can post... Hoping to get back to the Baja this weekend starting on Friday.

Harrisen and I thought that since we were cruising all the way up to Roseburg (1.5 hours North) last Saturday, that we'd make a weekend trip out of it and cruise up to Sweet Home (4 hours North) to pick up the lathe. So, Saturday night, after having a great dinner with all the ACDC folks (Roseburg, OR club Air Cooled Douglas County), we started driving North. I figured that it would be fun to hang out somewhere in Eugene/Springfield in the morning so we looked for a place to stay outside of Eugene. We ended up staying in Creswell at a fairly new hotel 10 mins from Eugene.
Sunday morning, we got up and drove over to Brooks Cut Rate Autoparts. This is such a fun store to look around. They have tons of VW/Sandrail/Dune Buggy stuff. (LOTS of EMPI crap! :yelling: ) But, they do have a decent amount of Bugpack/Scat/West Coast Metric products. So, we picked up some items still needed for Harrisen's Baja. Then we were off to Sweet Home... And back a few decades in time...
Once we were at Harrisen's grandpas place, we started disassembling the lathe from it's motor and the bench that it sits on. This took a little bit of time, but we finally got it done. Unfortunately, my nephew borrowed my father-in-law's cherry picker, so we had to load up the lathe by hand into the truck. I have no idea what it weighs in at, but both the lathe and the table/bench are equally heavy. Luckily, my other nephew and three of his friends were at my father-in-law's shop working on a '60s Buick. I used my truck to pull the lathe and table to the front of the shop with a chain. Then, with the lathe close to the truck, 6 of us lifted it into the bed. We did the same with the bench.
After all loaded, we headed home. We ended up getting in pretty late and didn't take the lathe to the shop until the next day. Unloading it was a little easier... :chillin: It's now at Das Werkstatt, and needs a good cleaning!
We used the lift to get it out of the bed... :dancing:
