Well, I have decided to have another air cooled project (LOVE a bit of air cooled, me!).

SO, I've taken on an early looker '72 ragtop.

Then I slapped a 1600 high tuned turbo lump to it.

Now, it's a draw-through set up on a Del carb, and ran 106bhp at the wheels with 5psi.

SInce then the engine has been rebuilt with forged pistons and crank, a nicer cam, some tastey heads, the plan is to run at about 14psi as it is and potentially add alcohol injection just to cool the charge.

The very fact that I am running 14psi on a drawthrough set up, with the VERY high resultant risk of a manifold detonation owed to having a pressurised air/fuel mixture strapped to the back of the car, is what has given the car her name...

Bad JuJu!

She will be seeing the drag strip a fair bit when completed...

One question I do have... Alternative front axles... I really dislike the ball joint beams for a Volksrod (LOVE them on a Baja though, I built a baby monster truck with an 8" widened beam and 3" raised spindles a while back). SO, it's either a king and link pin beam or something comletely different.

My question, what axles are commonly used? Remember I am in the UK so don't have access to many of the same cars you guys Stateside do... But I want the wheels to be past the nose, it has to look "right" for me...

I will keep a decklid on this (albeit chopped to hell to accomodate the frankly RIDICULOUS turbo set up), but the car will have a 3.5" roof chop, suicide doors and an oval rear screen when done (booked into a body shop at the end of the year for that lot). Lotus style fenders for the rain. Just a "typical" Volksrod, will be going for the scrapyard / steampunk look with it. Ally beer keg fuel tank annodised, the seats I'm not sure about yet... I'd love a pair of wingback chairs but they are a little large to fit in there!

I've never build a Volksrod before, but I am looking forward to getting stuck right in!

Any thoughts, chaps?

I'm mostly a lurker here but felt like making a post on my latest car rebuild. I have had this car for 20 years in many different forms, but it has been a drag car for the last 14 years. In all of that time I have never taken the body off, but this winter I decided the car was to a level that I wanted to build a new cage for it. Once the body came off I went nuts and now I am thrashing to get it back together before the June 9th Maple Grove race. I do 100% of the work, including engine, trans, chassis, bodywork and paint. I even balance the tires, notch the pistons, and did the machine work on the heads and case. First, here are a few pictures of it last year.

Well hello to you all! Fall-Apart-Dave, Pirate, Scallywag, Black Hearted Blaggard, Scoundrel, Pilferer and Professional Heartbreaker at your service....

Well hello to you all! Fall-Apart-Dave, Pirate, Scallywag, Black Hearted Blaggard, Scoundrel, Pilferer and Professional Heartbreaker at your service.

I have hankered for a Volksrod for some time, but have been into aircooled for years... Had a few projects in the past...

There was the Monster Baja that was never to be... (broke that and sold the parts because it was causing too many rows with the now ex-wife).

There was Tallulah, the 2100cc stroker type one powered T25 that went like stink... (My daughter, 5 years old at the time, cried when I sold that).

Now, it's time to go Volksrod on all y'asses!

So far, I have the car... A fairly sedate looking, tidy, '72 early looker ragtop...

But, well, it's not very "F-A-D" now, is it..?

So, the way I figure it, there's nothing wrong with ripping the decklid off and, well, doing this to it...

That there is a very nicely put together high tuned 1600 motor with a nice little blower strapped to it, I've misplaced the full spec but will get it up later. Forged pistons and crank, suitable cam, full flow oil, some nice heads, ratio rockers, should push it along nicely!

The trouble is though, I think that the panel gap on the decklid is a little off..?

So, I figured, let's Volksrod the bitch!

Work required currently:

1) Starboard side aft wheel bearing requires replacement

2) Wiring needs attention (sidelights are blowing fuses and indicators are more intermittent than indicators should be)

3) Disributor needs locking off to limit advance

4) I NEED TO PUT OIL IN THE ENGINE!!!!!!!!!!

5) Boost needs setting (going to run at 15psi for a giggle)

6) MOT

That lot ^ needs done by Euro Bug In over in Chimay, Belgium, on the 28/29/30th June, I NEED to take it! Then I fly straight from there to Vietnam for a couple of weeks, then back to the UK and drive straight to Bug Jam at Santa Pod the same day I land... Will be on the drag strip so best hope I put it together properly!!!

Then it's going to Wayne Allman's body shop around the end of the year for:

A) Roof chop

B) Suicide doors

C) Oval rear screen grafting in

and then... Full on Volksrod time! I'll be doing the rest of my work myself...

By the way, Wayne is responsible for this beast:

So I'm expecting a very high standard of work! :D

So, my shopping list... I'll be needed a beam extender mainly, which is something I am struggling finding in the UK. Some sort of nice little bullet rear lights, the interior is going to be a little bit steampunk, have lots of little bits and bobs and nice touches to throw in there...

Love the forum, having fun sniffing around and gaining inspiration.
