Re: My concept for the general Vee
Nice airbrush work... The paint job really pulled this build together. I enjoyed wathcing this build thread. Great Job...   What color green are you using??? . |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I mixed it off the bench. A little of this...a little of that...Drink a beer...a little more of this and then spray out card. Finally got what I was looking for. Made a gallon in the process. HEHEHE

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Hi MIke, I called George and told him all about your car as best humanly possible since he has no internet. He was very enthused and decided your car needs one of his hand made VW cog shifer knobs. :dancing: Hows that sound?
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Fuck me running!! I can't roll over now.:bow::bow:

Re: My concept for the general Vee

Sure glad Rat rods are acceptable or I'd just give up now. "D" |

Man, it sounds very cool!!:bow: I am digging the possibilities. One issue, I have a Scat T handle shifter with lock out. It can't be much higher profile or it would interfere with my dash when shifting into 1st and 3rd. |

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Iv airbrushed before and the skill you have is what iv always dreamed of becoming. (but never will :smilespin:)
IM blown away on not only the airbrushing but how you can get the faces to look alive. theres so many ways to screw up a face to make it look 2d,cartoony,blank, or unbalanced. you nailed the look and from what i seen of your other work it comes very natural to you. Natural is more important than skill IMO but you have both.:bow::bow: |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
It's amazing how deep the clear made your artwork look. Nice work!
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks for the kind words guys. I have been inspired by many here. I think the biggest thing I had going into the project was almost 2 years of planning and dreaming. I watched some great rides come to life here in the 5 years I have been hanging out.
Here are some shots from this eve. I reassembled the the handles. and mirrors. I then started to paint the rear brake lights. I sand blasted the brackets and housings. I scotch brited the lens. Then I masked it off in rows of 1/4 in tape and cut out the "black out" lines. I used plastic spray primer under the drab paint. I like the way it looks. It helps to break up the maltese a bit and not so obvious now. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop299.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop300.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop301.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Looks great, You may have posted already but what green is that, looks really similar to what I was considering for mine. -Gary
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Gary,
It is a bench mix. I just kept throwing shit in off of the mixer until I got it. I mixed enough for future mishaps and miscellaneous parts. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
This evening, I sanded down the trunk area and taped off the paint and undercoated it all. It will be a nice compliment to some nicely painted tank and other goodies.

Re: My concept for the general Vee
The car, paint and personal touches are looking great...you do some amazing work. Oh and by the way, received the DVD on the taillights...really cool, helps a bunch.
Secondly, if any of you have not checked out Mike's website...you are really missing something, guy has crazy skills. Looking forward to seeing the Zombie Killer all put together. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
i read this from front to back and must say !!!! cant wait to see it put together.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks guys. I am taking a bit of time off this weekend to get prepared for winter on the property. I did manage to do a bit of assembly on the rear of the car before the body is attached to the chassis. I will try to get a pic up later today.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Ordered my Upol Raptor Liner kit for the floor pan today. I will be spraying that this week and preparing the body for attachment as soon as all my new gaskets and seals arrive. Maybe the body on the pan this weekend.

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks for the kind words and Thank you West Coast Metric. I got all my seals on Fri. Weeee. So today I put in the deck lid seal and the front trunk seal. I also got the rest of the Raptor liner sprayed on the inside of the car's front bulkhead. I also undercoated in the rear.
I bead blasted the master cylinder and also the pedals then painted the pedals. Got everything hooked up before I had to perform a yoga position to get them in when the body was attached. If you have ever replaced pedals, you know what I am talking about. Tomorrow after noon, the pan meets the body for the first time in a while. I got busy this past few weeks and need the shop space. So I am kind of advancing my schedule a bit. But, I will be able to work around it. I also found a guy not far who says he can handle the windshield chop. Weee. I ordered new aftermarket glass for it. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop305.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop306.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop307.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop308.jpg |

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Got the body on the pan. Started the art on the gas tank. Next, yanking out the rear end and getting wheels painted or powdercoated.

|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Um,,, did you leave a red strip under the rear apron for a reason? Or is that an actual red stripe?
But I'm liking the whole thing Mike! Now what's the design for the front hood gonna be? |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I really like how the ass end looks. Nice job on the body lines. Keep it coming!
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Carlene,
It is a red stripe that separates the black and green. :) No art on the hood. All black. The art is under the hood with the other details. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Ahhh, ok, figured I'd ask :)
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
sweet to death..
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Do you still plan to use the custom cog emblem on the hood?:panic:
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Oh ya bro. I am painting it this week with the hood. Maybe tomorrow.
Got the tank about ready to permanently mount. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop315.jpg |

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Dammit, slow it down and stop doing such badass artwork! You're making us look bad! :funny:
Bang up job as always! Question, since you live a generally cold area and you seem like you know your stuff when it comes to paint. What temp activator did you use for your paint? I ask cause I'm using a med temp, 70-80. My 70-80 temp days are numbered. Should I worry about anything if I heat my garage but the temp isn't exactly 70. Say 65º. Wont it just cure a little slower and perhaps make my paint lay flatter. :Idunno: |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I use mid temp. I spray between 58-68 range for the most part, even with heat. I like it slower, it flows better. I just give it more time between coats. Not much wetsanding needed when it flows out nice.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Cool man. Thanks.

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Got the hood and a few more misc parts painted tonight. I also got the front bumper ready for primer and paint.

|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Black on the bumpers, side rails and roof rack. Black wheels too. No bling.

You are right Denisesewa. HEHEHe. The paint is a bit blingy. But that is it. lol.
Tonight I got the hood put on and got to stare at it for a while. It was good to see the hood on. The cog worked out perfectly for the hood ornament replacing the stock one. Thanks Tirezan! I am painting the lights and bumper tomorrow after work. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop320.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop321.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop322.jpg |

Re: My concept for the general Vee
:thumbsup: Agian I find myself with a loss of what to say other than AWESOME !!!! I am proud to see the emblem on that work of art. Your paint looks a mile deep. Definately a car Vrodders will be talking about for years to come.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks guys. It has been a blast since I have completed all the sanding for now. I will sand and buff it after I get it all bolted up. It is pretty smooth. But a month of curing will do it some good for level sanding and buff.
Tonight I got the headlights and the bumper painted. I will bolt it up tomorrow after heading out with the family in the AM. Have a great weekend everyone. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I got the front bumper and lights assembled and mounted. Then I started to prep out the side crash bars for paint.

i really like what u did to the bumper, that thing is sic!!!!!!!! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Rich. I wasn't sure as I was building it. But once I got the paint on it, I was very happy with the results.
I have been prepping the doors for paint. Maybe start over the weekend. Work has really picked up this past couple of weeks. I did get the crash bars all done and assembled. The diamond plate is just sandblasted to dull it out. I am up in the air on it. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop325.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop326.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
get that box off there.. i got a 12 pack for you
looking good! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Cobra! Those will hold about 3-16 ozers. 3 Fosters nicely. I am going to have larger storage inside too. Hell, not to mention the entire roof rack. HAHAHAHA
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
How about dulling the diamond plate by spraying a subtle grey on them, them scuffing the diamonds to look more like a wear pattern or just have the tops exposed as bright alum??
That bright alum just seems like it will stand out too much~ |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I am thinking of powdercoating them black or painting them. Not sure yet. I am going to leave them as they are until the car is done then decide.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Every detail in this car is amazing. I am excited to see this in person. Great work.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I think the diamond plate looks good. I do think it will need more dull aluminum pieces throughout the car to tie it all in. Otherwise, it wont look cohesive.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
:thumbsup::thumbsup: amazing work...

Re: My concept for the general Vee
I honestly haven't followed this build all that close, but damn - it's looking great!
Crazy thing is, when I first got my Bug, I thought about doing something very similar to your sidebars, only instead of an ammo box, a jerry can. So much for originality haha! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
this bug is very cool ! good feeling and high quality , I like the job on front bumper for turn signal for example . Congrats !
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I have overrun here at work, it is a good thing these days. I have been doing a lot of work for the NAMM show in Anaheim in Jan. Almost caught up.
I have been sorting through all of my old hardware and blasting it all up here and there. I finally got the doors painted and assembled ready to mount to the car in the next day or so. Put all new gaskets and seals in everwhere. Thanks WCM. I am trying to find some stainless countersunk metric screws for the hinges. I have been collecting the materials for the interior. My wife has been warming up with the sewing machine. I think she is going to do fine. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop327.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop328.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Sweet Mike !!!!!!!! I have been anxiously awaiting an update on the Zombie Killer. I really like the holes in the door handles. More ,more, more................. I am glad you have pleanty of work. They starve me to death every Dec. in the tire business. The only time anyone buys a tire during this time, is if they pop one on the way to Walley Hell to get Christmas presents. Then they just buy 1 tire. Oh the joy of being self employed.P.S. Santa told me he has a little something for you.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
That paint has my mouth on the floor, damn that looks amazing.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
WOW!! I am finally up-to-date on your build. What else can I say but... &
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Mucho Grassy Ass.
Tonight I hung the doors and did the alignment as well. Took a little bit of fudging, but got them closing nicely with the new weatherstripping. I have been bead blasting everything that is shiny. Mostly chrome, but the aluminum parts have cleaned up nicely. I also blasted all the bezels on the instrumentation and installed them after I wetsanded and buffed the dash. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop329.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop330.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop331.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop332.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
This project just keeps getting better and better. Nice work!
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I agree!
love the look of it! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I got the steering wheel and column assembly all blasted and painted last evening. I put it all together at lunch today.
http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop333.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop334.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
haha, the car looks sooo mean, but then the front bumper kinda takes away from it. maybe if it had teeth dripping with blood or something. fantastic build none the less.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks! The bumper grew on me. The cool thing is I can make any bumper I want in the future, in case I have to build a cow catcher in the front to take care of the zombie horde. :)

Thanks guys.
I tore down the ragtop for a rebuild and freshening up of paint. Missing a few plastic rollers. Need to head to Home Depot to find something that may work. I have to work this weekend, so not much on the car till the holidays I would imagine. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
"Something wicked this way comes." Great progress Mike!!!!!:thumbsup:

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Today I got a few hours in after work. I managed to chop the wiper arms. I installed the wiper mechanism after a good cleaning and paintwork. I also blasted a bunch of pieces for the ragtop.
I put the drivers seat in and sat in it for a while and made some Vrrrooomm Vrooom noises for a while. :) I installed the rear view mirror to see how far down it hung. Kind of low, do not know what to do just yet. I also chopped the visors down and made them out of the diamond plate. I installed the passenger side tonight, but didn't get pic. I will get one tomorrow. Finally, I did some photoshopping to get a feel for the future black wheels. I am still looking for some decent street slicks for the rear 12 in wide wheels. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop335.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop336.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop337.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop338.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I blasted for about 3 hours today on more miscellaneous parts and bolts. Got the entire ragtop section ready for paint. I finished up the visors. Mounted them. I am going to paint the frame work of the visors as well.
http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop339.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Hey Painter...you better slow down Bruddah! You're going to work yourself right out of a project..LOL!! The General is turning out SO Rad! Great build!
Aloha p.s.,Watch your forehead on those sunvisors!! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Al. I had given that much consideration. When they are in the up position, I have a better chance of cracking my head on the rag opening. :) When they are down, they should help keep zombies from breaking through the glass.:stoned::stoned:
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
To bad you cant follow the contour of the roof line to make it flow better.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Wow bud , she came out really nice ! i love the door handles to !!

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Grassy ass!!! I have some cool stuff planned for the seats. The same theme will carry over into the floorboards and rear seating area and storage. I will dig up the sketches later on and post them.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I got a bunch of parts painted out today. Black on black. Now I have to find small windshield wiper blades. Anyone have any ideas. I am thinking 8in blades would work great. I googled, but no luck.
I also put in the rear glass. :panic: |
