Re: My concept for the general Vee
It looks like I will be able to make it. . I will probably be down there with my daughter. I look forward to checking it all out.
I will not be in the VW. I just started the wiring tonight. It may be done, but not legal.:hmm: :) |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Legal? What isn't legal anymore?
 |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Just curious how many of you actually wire it back up to stock configuration, or do you use the dune buggy schematics out there? I am not running 4 way flashers. I will have a flare kit. :)
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Not saying I wired mine the right way......... :funny: Since I took out most of the stock switches and the spedo I wired up some toggle switches and push button switches and 4 indicator lights. Used a trailer converter to run single tail lights as brake and turn signals, lost the windshield wipers since the motor didn't work and it's a fair weather car only and the hazzard flasher didn't work with the trailer converter so........... When I was all done and the shit that I wanted to work was working I disconnected the battery and started cutting and or removing any wires not in use. It worked for me
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Hey Tequilla, tell me more about your trailer converter.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Don't worry Tequilla, I found a bunch of old threads in the search. Some that I had bookmarked earlier. I will find one today. Autozone says special order. I will try a trailer place locally. Thanks.

Re: My concept for the general Vee
I found a Hopkins Taillight converter at Autozone. Part number 48845. 14 dollars. Smaller than I expected. Do you still need to run flashers with these units? Oh, by the way. They are out of blinker fluid at Autozone. :)
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
With the trailer connector my rear hazard lights didn't flash and I believe if I remember correctly the turn indicator (Dash) light didn't work right either. My solution was to ditch the hazard light switch and mount dual turn indicator (Dash) lights. One for left and one for right.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Got the headlights, hi lo switch hooked up. I also got the starter turning over the motor. Weeeee. A note to anyone who has painted their car and misc parts, make sure you get a good ground on your lights and stuff. I had to go back in and take a round file to a lot of brackets in order to get a good ground.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Got the wiring done tonight. I have to clean it up and tie it down, but it is all working except for the oil pressure and the gen light. I have to figure that out yet. Baffled.
I got the exhaust mounted, still waiting for the stinger. I also started to fill up the braking system. Tomorrow, bleed and adjust. I will be starting it for the first time tomorrow. I hope I can sleep. :) I met Rawb down at Painters Grinding today. They had a little BBQ. There were two Vrods there. One was a pick up that was stretch to the bejesus. But no camera, sorry. Rawb's car will be cool when it is all wrapped up. The wheels are montstrous. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop376.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop377.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I managed to get it running today, it fired right up after getting the fuel system primed with the coil disconnected and letting it turn over for a while. It needs a little bit of a tune up. I will do that this week. The big things left are bleeding and adjusting the brakes. A buddy was suppose to come over this afternoon and help with it. No sign yet. Here are some shots cleaned up outside today.
Waiting on stinger and windshield yet. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop379.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop380.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop381.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
LOOKING GOOD Mike!
You gonna give us a vid of the first drive? |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Carlene.
I got a vid of it running today, but I have to figure out how to make it smaller. I will get a vid of the first drive. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Hmmm..them tires need a little something...just can't place my finger on it.... they look a little flat......
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
HAHAHA. No armour all for you. (in my best soup nazi voice.)
Took it for a ride today. It would appear that I will be replacing the master cylinder. Ugh... Brakes work, but not great. The linkage still hits the hood. I will need deck lid stand off I think. The family had a blast in it. :) |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Hey Pale,
Check the adjustment of the brake shoes, you may have to adjust them a few times before they bed in. Loose shoes will give a longer pedal stroke before making contact. Just a thought, and easy and cheap to fix. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks! I have them adjusted out already unfortunately. I see a leak coming out of the reservoir supply line. But it isn't under pressure there. It was the one that came with the car. It should be an easy replace anyways.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Just for you Carlene.

Re: My concept for the general Vee

You too Rawb! I look forward to hanging out in the dirty bastards section at the VW on the Greens show. Will you be running then or pulling it up? Rock on!
Tonight I made the template for the windshield and planned out the sound system. Pics later this week. |

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks guys!!! It really was heart warming. My daughter has been bugging me to cruise every evening. HAHAHA. I had to say no this eve as I have the master cylinder out. But she is excited about her first car being an old VW.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
great vid....and nice beard
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Glad you guys enjoyed the vid. HEHEHE. I changed out the master cylinder today and rebled the brakes. Now I can stop. Weeeee. I also cut down the roll cage and gave it a preliminary fit. I marked the holes in the floors. I will take it down and paint it this weekend.
I have a pair of 10 in woofers and 6 in 3ways speakers coming in the next week from a buddy who owns a stereo shop. Working out a little barter with him. I am looking for the right AM /FM Ipod dock for the stereo system. I am thinking a 100 watt amp in the back. Oh ya..I found a guy to cut my windshield here locally for 50. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
This past week, it has been going down the punch list and finishing up details in the interior. I got the roll cage in and painted with Raptor Liner. Finished up the seat belts and the back floor boards. I also go the stinger finally. It is running pretty good, but I am taking it to a local VW shop next week for some carb sync work.
The glass windshield is in and and we are ready to rock. Just a few more items to complete including the stereo system. Few pics from the past week. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop383.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop384.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop385.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop386.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I enjoyed the video..and the car looks and sounds great
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Chris, It sounds so much better now. There was an exhaust leak and the mixture screws needed a bit of work at the time of the video. I am going to put a muffler insert into the stinger to keep things down a bit. But it is throaty.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
This week I got a lot of little shit done. You know, the things you think are so small, but they add up at the end. Fixed a few things that have come to attention as I have made some small trips through the neighborhood.
I finished up the roof rack this week and got it mounted up until the ragtop canvas gets here this week. I will be getting the tags at the beginning of the week. Then I will put some miles on it and work out the kinks before it's first show at "The Greens" http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop387.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop388.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop389.jpg |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I totaled up the invoices this afternoon. To complete the build from start to finish with the original purchase of the car came to 3127.00 USD. I feel really good about that. Most importantly, the wife does. I do not think I will have to twist her arm to start the next one in the fall. She has asked for the keys a few times so she could drop my daughter off at a few of her friend's houses this past week. Too cool to see them enjoy it. Perhaps, better than myself.
This has been an enjoyable adventure in retrospect. The hours into it are a blur at this point in time. I am more proud of the persistence it took to stay on it and finish it, than the final product itself. There really is nothing more here than just doing it, even if I haven't done it before. If I could pass along any advice to those in process, it would be to suggest to do what ever you can. Do not give yourself excuses or reasons not to do a part or process. If you are waiting for a part and feel like it is holding you back, go do something else. Those little widgets of accomplishment add up. That is what it took for me, and a few beer along the way. Thank you Old Chub. So. 1 year and 3 monts, 390 pics later, here it is ready to rock.....The Zombie Killer http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop390.jpg |

The car looks fantastic Mike. It has been a pleasure to follow along with your build and I can only hope mine comes out 1/2 as nice. Thanks for the advice on the phone yesterday. it gave me a few things to think about.
Again, great finish and I hope you and the family continue to enjoy it and be proud of your accomplishments. |

I will. I am actually going to camp the night before and my club parks the cars for VWOTC and VWEC. I will be parked with the club and if you would like I can hold a spot for ya. We usually have a huge grassy area, alot of great people in the crew, VERY family. I will have two cars there, the wife and three kids. We BBQ during the show and have a huge tent set up for shade, if not several. |

It's just great to see a project get completed with such attention to detail. Inspirational indeed!!! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Steve. Thank you for the work you put into this website that gives guys like me, with a VW fettish, something to do and a place to share it with.
I am going to get it photographed professionally with a bunch of hot chicks and some zombies in the near future. I will be sure to get them to you for your viewing pleasure. :) |

Could we get some pic's of your car with some hot Zombie chicks  |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I will post the Zombie Chicks pic as soon as I take them.
I got the rag top assembled over the weekend and also built a speaker cabinet for the back. I will post a few pics later. Today I got the tags on it. I put about 30 miles on it this afternoon. The front end is a bit stiff yet, but is loosening up. Ran great. Thumbs up all over the place. HEHEHE. The Zombies were scattering.:chillin: |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
A few pics with the top in and the sound system going in. I added a few bits of storage on the back of the seats and such. I also add a fire extinguisher to the roll cage. Little stuff that has been fun to mess with.
I am going to raise the front end an inch or two to get better travel in the suspension. http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop391.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop392.jpg http://www.rollingchrome.com/vw/chop393.jpg |

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Build me one for 3K!!!! Nicely done! It just goes to show you don't have to have a ton of money to make a nice unique ride.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Brilliantly done. I love the part about your wife borrowing the rig to show (off) to her friends. I believe the message she's conveying is "my hubby is immensly talented." I completely agree.:clapping::clapping::clapping:

Re: My concept for the general Vee
I am performing the tie rod end flip at the end of the week. It should improve the handling quite a bit. I have been running it with out shocks all week. It is pretty smooth. I got the toe in set better today. That grooved hightway stuff was throwing me all over. Hopefully getting it dialed in by the weekend show.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Quote:
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
It should level out the tie rods quite a bit. I do not have spindles. I am running an adjusted beam. By flipping the outer tie rod ends, it is my understanding that it will keep the wheels straighter when the suspension is under compression.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
hmm i take your word for it seeing that I know very little bout it. just thought that I had read that it was bad. wrong again lol
so really you should just give up on Gen. V drive it north to Greeley and leave her there ;) |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Have a look at the clearanced ball joint options as well.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I have them already Buddy. I have the car about mid point on the beam adjustment. I will lower it a little bit more once I get the new ends on it. Then set the toe again and all that fun stuff. :)
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Pale,
Congrats on the win on Sunday. It was nice to see the CO volksrods well represented. See you next show. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks! See you then Soily. There is a show on Memorial Day in Mead. Apparently, they are going to shut the town down and have a car show. I may be going up with a few other VW.
Let me know if you are interested. Should be fun. Then I will be going to one day of the Goodguys in a couple weeks. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I have not been online for a while and I followed your build from the start.
love the outcome of the car. congratulations man!! ps realy dig the seats! |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
I think Mike is too busy enjoying that ride!!!!!
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
know I would!!

Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Boes,
HEhehe. I have been driving it almost every day here in Nor CO. I have only been caught in the rain one time. Talk about rooster tails coming off of the tires. We have been hitting a bunch of hot rod shows with it. I have collected 4 best of class trophies so far. Pissing off a bunch of high dollar build hot rod owners. :) The hot rod community has been quite amused by the little VW. I do not think I will be taking it to the Bug In at Bandimere. They want to much money for every thing there. I haven't had any real issues. Knocking on wood. I have yet to flip the tie rod ends yet. Maybe this weekend. |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Mike, you and the ZK gotta be at the Bug-In! I'll pony up $10 towards your expenses...anyone else?!??!
Volksrods representing.....fund. Aloha |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks, really. It is not the money, but the principal. I am hitting a hot rod show that Sunday instead.
|

|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
OK first off NICE!! I have been off volksrods for awhile. but decided to do something with the 66 rusting away in my driveway. I log on and what do I see? THIS DAMN THING!! I started following it last year and watching for all your posts..... I LOVE this rod man you did a great job :dancing:
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Thanks Soulrider. My car is also a 66, or at least started as. :) I appreciate it. Nothing but time my friend.
|
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Gonna miss you out there on Sunday Mike but hey without you there and the progress since the green, I may actually get noticed, lol.
Do you know about Saturday down here in the springs? We have buses at the brewery, free show and cruise between to breweries and through garden of the gods. Should bring Zombie Killer down |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
To complete the build from start to finish with the original purchase of the car came to 3127.00 USD.:panic:
That is an amazingly low cost for the way this thing turned out! Great job! Im already in almost double that for my 51 that isnt even on the road yet:finger::finger::finger: |
Re: My concept for the general Vee
Rob,
I would enjoy the ride there through the foothills, but I am a vendor at Sunday's Colorodan Show in Longmont. They gave me a spot to set up and have my trailer next to the Zombie Killer VW and Snowmobile. :) Thanks for the offer. Soon though. Ratlook, Ya, just time and some thriftiness bro. They do not have to be expensive to be finished. |
