Someone at the coffe shop this morning asked why we work so hard at horse rescue. This is why. Merry Legs was pregnent, beaten and starved when we rescued her. This shot is about 5 minutes after the little guy was born. Mom and son doing fine !

Alykat, that is awesome!!! You guys rock!!

On a sadder note, our cat Trouble died last night. We took her in as a stray about 16 years ago and she was at least a year old when we did. We found her last night around 10 and burried her next to Kuma in the back yard. Things are good though. She lived a long happy life.

Judging by the wood, and the plastic containers the only thing that dog chews on is food. Now if that was at my house you would have half of those crates gone and the other half with teeth marks.. just like all of my hats :hmm:

Our newest rescue. One of our members was at the horse auction and this little guy and his mom were both in such bad condition thay could barely stand. The only bidder was a killer buyer so she out bid the bastard, paid I think she said $35 for the pair, and brought them to us. The little guy was so bad he is the size of one and a half month old horse, but the vet said he is about four months . He is doing very well now, even able to stand with his front legs and do a mini kick with both back feeet after his nap in the sun !

Well, it's happened again. A couple who are fostering one of our rescue horses was at the horse auction looking for a saddle and called to say the horse killer buyer was bidding on a miniature horse and her baby. They asked what could be done to stop him and we told them "Out bid the son of a bitch ! We will cover the purchase." So our family now has these new additions. My wife, Beth, is 5 feet tall and the mom comes up below her waist. You can imagine how small the baby is. The white sticker on the butt is the sale number and will be taken off once they get more comfortable in their new home. Right now they are very shaken up as they were shipped to the sale in a trailer crammed with full size horses. I'm amazed they weren't trampled and killed during the trip ! At least they are safe now and in a wonderful foster home. Darn critters are one reason I never seem to have money for my cars and wind up doing a lot of trading for stuff. At least it's an easy choice.

Re: The PET THREAD...

Well I have had 3 Basset Hounds over a period of 38 years, the first one was our family pet, I was about 7 years old when we got him and he passed away in 84, I believe he was 12.
Them at 24 my wife and I got a Basset puppy which we had to get rid of at 3 years old when our youngest son started crawling, he'd grab the dog's ears and pull them. Well the dog didn't like it very much so the dog would grab our son by the arm with his mouth and drag the little guy across the room and wouldn't leave a mark on him at all. We decided to get rid of the dog just in case he would get tired of our son and really bite him bad, so we gave him to a neighbor who took good care of him, we didn't see him when he moved to his farm after he retired.
.
I got another Basset in 98 as a fathers day gift (the gift that keeps giving) from my wife and kids, we named him Thunder (because his bark was real LOUD. He also left Thunder boltz all over the yard, and if you didn't watch were you stepped, then you have been Thunder Struck :funny:.
I hafta say this one has been the smartest Basset Hound I have ever seen. My wife taught him to wipe his paw's on the rug before he came in from outside.
Well this past Monday (May 9th) he turned 13 years old, he's getting around much slower and is starting to have bladder problems, if I'm not fast enough to let him out his pee will just start dribbling out and leave a trail from walking (he pisses all over his back paws, the funny part is he wouldn't want to step in it when walking back in), he also started getting cyst's all over his body which we were told not to worry about unless they ruptured. Well about 3 years ago one of the biggest ones on his shoulder ruptured and took forever to heal up, this past winter it started leaking fluid from it again, now he smells terrible even if we give him a bath daily. Now that he is 13 years old we have come to the conclusion that he died about 2 months ago, he just hasn't figured it out yet .
He doesn't act at all like he is in pain, if he did I would have him put down, I just don't think I can do it unless he gets to the point he can't walk anymore.

I thought about digging his final resting place, but IF I do dig a hole he's gonna live another 10 years, dadgum Bastard Hounds can be stubborn like that. I think I'll just wait it out. I'll most likely shed a few tears because he's been the best dog I have ever had as well as the smartest dog, and I have only had 3 dogs all Basset Hounds, and I'd never own anything but a Basset.

He has lost almost all his hearing but he makes up for that with his nose, about 5 minutes before my wife gets home from work you can see his nose up sniffing the air then he starts getting excited and waits at the gate for her to pull into the driveway.

I'll bring this to an end as I could write all day about his silly stinking self and all the funny stuff he has done, and I also have a tough time keeping all my posts short, so I'll post a couple pictures of him from his younger years and leave it at that.

Re: The PET THREAD...

So our cats both have fleas...

I bought some of the Sergeants Gold Squeeze On crap.. http://www.sergeants.com/product_images/01061_F.jpg

but it doesn't seem to be working.. This week I bought some Program and Capstar pills.

Is it safe to mix all of that? I know the capstar works in conjunction with the Program (Capstar is supposed to kill immediately while Program interrupts the lifecycle and keeps them away..) but I don't kow about the chemicals in the Sergeants stuff..

Anyone have any experience?

Thanks!

At this point it is a really good idea to talk to a vet. Some questions you don't want to take any chances on the wrong answer.

yeah, I actually called the tech support line for the Program people..

They said they've never done clinical trials with that particular product, but have done tests with the chems and had no problem. additionally, since one is a topical ointment and the other is a pill, there should be no issue

Re: The PET THREAD...

Robert brought him home from his job at a cabinet shop locally back '99. He was just a small furball then. :love:Brendal stripes, a spotted tongue and shepard markings, typical heinz 57 mutt , that's why we named him Taxi, plus it sounded funny to holler for a taxi way out here in BFE.
He was scared of loud noises, anything that backfired and hated gun season and the fire crackers the old neighbor used to throw at another dog that was truely a pest to the neighbors. :hmm:
But he loved Taxi. Taxi would run with him as fast as he could when he would drive out the long driveways we have. Hated thunderstorms.
He wouldn't get in a vehicle though. In winter he looked like a horse, thick fur mixed with his coarse hair. In spring he loved being raked to get it all off and would knock you over cuz he felt good.
Nothing came thru this yard that he didn't go into stealth mode and sneak around behind to find out who and what it was. Hated the electric meter trucks and who ever was driving them ever since the first guy pepper sprayed him.
Loved stalking and chasing squirrels crossing the yard.
His only bad trait was he would dig body craters in the oddest places, besides under any vehicle that sat for more than 24hrs.
But he was a very good dog. He had abd leg and running would cause him to limp later. That foot was slightly twisted and he had the smaller feet from whatever breed had them, they were not as big as you'd think for a dog his size, which topped out at about 125-130.

In the past year, he started losing his spunk.
Today we lost him. He's peaceful and appears asleep at the back door. :crybaby:

We had already discussed putting him down next week, his health was going down way too fast,,,we knew it was heartworms. We've both lost dogs before, on or off the pills.
Robert is on his way home to bury him. Had planned to come home early to move junk cars, not to bury his dog~

Today totally sucks~~:crybaby:

Re: The PET THREAD...

Thanks guys~ our other little dog is a bit confused, she just sat at the back door staring at him til Robert got home. Yep he'll always be here~

That is him 2 yrs ago when I got my new camera, he was big and burly, a power house when he got frisky.
We think part sheppard, bulldog, chow, boxer and some typical hound, maybe some rott, but a well tempered dog.
He will be missed very much~

We had a new volunteer, George Brauneis, show up at the house Sunday to work with our rescue horses. Turns out he is a photographer, (Mountain Man Photo) and he snapped a couple of shots while he was there. The snow is finally melting out of the pasture and starting to retreat up the mountain. The horse in the round pen is Gizmo, one of the dozen Arabians who were being starved when we rescued them last fall. At that time he was a walking skeleton, barely able to stand, and needed help lifting his feet in order to get him in our trailer. I really worried we wouldn't be able to save him. I think he is coming around nicely.

Well, the ol' man finally took his leave of us. He had one hell of a run - may we all be so lucky.
