"Cash" Rod... Irish build..

5 Attachment(s)
This is my first Project, building a VolksRod, I could think of easier things to build but hey what's the fun in that. Started with a 1972 beetle, bout a week-ish into it, grind out all the old body filler, i cut out the rusted heater channels, chopped the back end, started to take apart the inside too, my only worry is the Bean extension, has anybody here built a volksrod without a Ben extender???? Would love to see how they did it, I'm from Ireland and beam extenders are hard to come by when on a tiny almost nothing budget,

Welcome along. Its great to see another Irish Volksrod being built. I'm building one myself. (At painting stage now).

Good man. Fermanagh man here living in Texas trying to build a VR myself.

You should ask Doug on the board here about his extenders. I guess if you got the overall dimensions and weight, you could figure out a shipping cost. I'm guessing the currency rate is still somewhat in the Euro's favour?

Might not be as bad/hard as you think to get yourself one.

Hey Roc,

Welcome aboard! As far as the beam extenders go, you can use one if you want, it is YOUR car, make it like you want to make it.

There are quite a few cool rides that don't have an extender, as well as some that use them. It is up to the individual.

Mine won't have one. I personally don't want one.

If you want to look into using one though, Doug (DBUG41 on here) makes the best and his prices are quite reasonable. He also ships worldwide. You can contact him on here (look at his profile). Although, knowing him, he should be chiming in soon on your build.

There are quite a few different build threads on here, so get comfortable and search through them. Everyone has their own take on what looks cool.

just make sure its legal in your country.
It would be fucked up if you build it with an extender and have to take it off again.
I would love to use one myself but its not possible here in holland to get a mot with it.

just look around here and build your rod the way you want.
everthing's possible if you want

Damn! I forgot about the dreaded MOT! I lived in Cork for a few years and I remember they were totally anal when it came to taking my modern car in for the test.

Even the MOT people up North were power nazis.

In saying that, I know there are a few VR's and hotrods roaming around back home, it might be worth trying to find those guys and asking advice on what is acceptable.

Best of luck to you. I wish there was a bigger custom car scene over there...maybe I wouldn't have moved to Texas and this goddam heat! lol

I agree with the others, go with a doug extender and frame brace, ive just fitted mine in mock up and its pretty sweet, steering box clears bonnet too. I also cut off front apron but left edge around the front of bonnet so std bonnet latch will still work. I can post up some picks if ya like, good luck brother.

Or you can go the Nederchop route and get the wheels-out-front look without an extender ... We can't alter the wheelbase here in the Netherlands so I kinds stole a bit and invented a bit and came up with a method of chopping and shortening that works for us ... and keeps us legal.

Here's a brief photoshop explanation. Take a look at the bottom of the A pillar at the heater channel to see how much the front of the body moves back without altering the wheelbase. For a 4 inch chop it's around 9 inches. You need to split th toof front to back and make a piece to fill the stretch, but it does keep the whole shape of a beetle roof intact ... OTOH - you end up with a 2-seater :)

Hey Roc, I know the next one I build will be neder-chop like trib did. Totally makes sense. don't change the wheelbase, change the body, you'll be dicing it up anyway!

Slowly getting there, I'm in filling stages at the minute, the arches are a bitch to smooth out.... Filled in most of the dash too, got rid of the ashtray, cig lighter, couple of the unused knobs and the glove box and vents, oh and the handle thing's, almost ready for priming :) can't wait to see it in primer, quick question, do I need to keep the heater channels??? Could I just weld in new plates instead of replacing the channels themselves??
