Is there any info on this ride?

http://media-cache-ec0.pinimg.com/73...2770a01247.jpg

Hi, I haven't been able to find any info on this Mercwagen (or Mercurwagen) found on Pinterest.

Anyone able to point the way?

Thanks

There is a little info and some more pictures of it in this thread from when it was at the Michigan Vintage VW Festival a few years back. The owner was driving it from Long Island NY out to California.

Thanks for the info. Those pics are excellent and answered one of my main questions--The front end it custom built and not some bolt on--Rats.

Yeah, and the "grill" is just generic FLAPS stick-on plastic chrome strips. It really is a 50 foot car...at best.

Re: Is there any info on this ride?

"50 foot car", I used to know a girl like that---good from far, but far from good.

Thank you for taking the time.

In your opinion, was the chassis shortened to help create the slope of the chop, or was all the slope pulled out of the roof?

Have there been other builds (hopefully build threads) where a chop has been sloped down creating a coupe with a smooth roof line, like this one?

Re: Is there any info on this ride?

I got creative with sizing the photos and comparing to other VW's and it appears the chassis was not shortened.

Still unable to find other examples (or build info) with the slope roof.

Found one. All is now good. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=500616

Was curious about what the builder meant by "slated the post back 5in"

Thank you to all who replied.

I love the lines of that... that really hits some tones I like... he changed it from that, but I really like that swoop it has..

Re: Is there any info on this ride?

Its got some great lines for sure. I looked at his FB page and the look he is going for
is a bit odd. Kinda a mix between a bug and Porche. Wasn't that what the whale tale was for.....and it failed to......
I think it looks cool as hell like it is. Maybe extend that front out lower it ect. Whatever it turns into he has some great metal working skills.

Oh and I love that Mercwagen. Its not always apparent what went into a car
when you see it all painted and done. Impressive workmanship for sure :bow:

Re: Is there any info on this ride?

thank you all for the replies.

DrHax you pulled out my favorite pic from that link. We are in full agreement on the lines. The builder kept customizing off in a different direction, I would have called all the major mods done, after that pic, cleaned it up and called it a volksrod (I would have even kept the pillar, the "hardtop" look is cool, but work intensive)

What makes the chop in the picture different from a standard 5in chop? It drops down, pretty much eliminating the back seat, but lines up with the rear clip nicely. I have the basic "how to chop a VW" books, which give the basic step by step how to chop (This I need) but the finished basic chopped VW has different lines. The one in the pic has the lines I would like. Any ideas what was done differently?

Honestly I really dig that look with the hood. If you get a smaller flat oval window and graft it in.. modify the original parts in.. you could create a sweet fast back chopped bug. Wonder what it'd look like with fenders? :Idunno:
