ball joint or king/link pin? you can take more out of a ball joint, i think something like 3 inches, i think a bit less out of a k/l. i'm just cutting 6 inches out of mine and maybe ditching the shock towers so cutting the body wont be a concern.

oh... going off your name i'm guessing you have a 1970, duh. ball joint it is!

You can take 6 inches out of a beam on a balljoint bug... I think only like 2 on a linkpin (these are total, not per side)... but if you take enough out of linkpin, you can put the shock mounts inside the fender (raise the gas tank a bit)... I heard about this in hot vw's a few months ago... ummm... Tim Hess I think... red 60ish oval... don't remember very well and lost the issue.

Or this is an option too. The beam is 5" overall, gas tank retains o.g. position and beam still has shocks.

growler... never seen that before... but I LIKE IT!!! *begins to rethink suspension setup*

is that sturdy enough? or is there additional reinforcment added as well?

Growler June 10th, 2003 08:57 PM

The plate is welded to the body, what you don't see is where the bolt passes through the plate it is in a short piece of cro-mo tubing that is heliarc welded to the plate on both sides.

Yeah, it's sturdy enough. :P

All I'm saying is there is other options out there. I don't necessarily reccomend that anyone do this particular kind of mod unless they are fully qualified. My Dad has built several race cars completely from scratch and is capable, not everyone is...

Example:

Hope that helps.

Is that a Pikes Peak car? Wow.

Growler June 11th, 2003 11:42 AM

Yeah it is. Used to run a F.I. 2400cc until the rule changes forced us to step it up to a V8.

700 HP, Porsche 930 box, twisty dirt roads...the thing is a beast. No I don't get to drive it. :D

Just for reference purposes.
If you have a early body on a late pan. You can not narrow the beam as much as you could with a late body. You will have to clearence the the body a bit. I did mine 4" so I needed to clearence the body some I cut a 2 1/2"wider than the existing space wedge out of a 2X4 and hammered it down between the the stock length beam. I know not the greatest metal working technique .... But worked quickly and you can see it.
