My 61' Volksrod
Well since I'm not going to get the "Crazy Slacker" of the Month award I figuerd I better get back to work on my projects.
This is an introduction to the newest one to enter my mind, it will be part "Death" part "KDF Mangler" part "Rat Patrol" part "Radio Trib" and so on.
The donor car is a 61' beetle that I originally bought as a parts car for my other projects, it has been sitting in my yard for over two years and the wife said she wanted it gone so whats a guy to do but cut it up and start a new project. :grin:

Day 1

So as you can see the end of day 1 I got the car striped down, fenders removed and the rear apron ruff cut.

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Day 2
I spent most of the day just running bracing, I'm going for a 6" chop 2 1/2" narrowing (I'm going to narrow the body to fit the roof) 3 1/2" shortening and about 3" section job so I think my work is really cut out for me.

I could not belive it would take all day just to run all the bracing but I wanted it done right, I used a 1" square tubing and inserted a 3/4" square tubing into it so I can slide the body together when I narrow it.

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Day 3

The fun begins, My freind Cody (67 utahrat) came over to lend a hand and some muscle for the days activites.
Laid the chop out and decided to remove the roof before we took the body off the pan.

I should of cut all the inside lines before I welded the doors shut.:ohmy:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Day 3 part 2

I'm still trying for the lazy slacker of the mounth award. :grin::grin:
No the computer crashed before I could finish day 3.

Off with it's head. :sawzall:

Then it was time to take the body off the pan. :clapping:

Cody talked me into breaking out my new plasma cutter to remove the firewall and back luggage tray. :plasmacutter:

Then it was time to set the roof back on to see what we needed to do to cut the body to fit, it was decided that I would take 2 1/2" out of center of the body and 3 1/2" from behind the doors.

After that it was time to fit it all back together. :welder:

Then triming lots of triming to get the C piller to set just right.

So at the end of day three this is how it sits.

The roof is just sitting on the car and there are only tack welds holding the boby mods in place at this time, I still need to remove the B pillers and finish triming the A & C pillers to fit to my liking then tack them into place, re-install the B pillers, door tops and try to decided how much I'm going to section out of the body and also the best place to do it. So there you have it this is how I spent my 3 day Thanksgiving weekend. Thanks again to Cody (67utahrat) for the help on the third day.

Untill next time. :dancing::dancing::dancing:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Thanks Guys. :bow::bow::bow:

So I decided to just remove the B pillars at the drip rail instead of cutting into the roof and while I was at it I fliped the roof over to fill in that section.

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Part 2 :grin::grin::grin:
I'm still trying to get posting down so be patient with me guys.

I also found that the drivers side C pillar was 1/4" wider then the window chanel, so I cut and made it fit. :sawzall:

Then it was time to re-fit the roof by my self. :panic::panic::panic:

So that's it for now it's all tacked in place and fit to my liking next step is to re-fit the B pillars, the door tops and decide how much and were to section out of the body.

Really like the direction this one is going.

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Thanks for all the kind words. :bow:

This will be my third volksrod build and I am trying new things with each one. The first is my 67' volksrod it is about 99% finished I say that because are they ever finished :grin: also with a new build on a 45 year old car there are allways bugs to work out, second is my 66' volkstruck I need to try to finish it before I finish the 61'

I am trying to get the 61' mocked up then return to work on the 66' volkstruck then bounce back and fourth between the two. My freind Mike lent me this wheeled cart for this build and it has been a life saver I need to pull my truck out of the garage to have room to work on the cars so this has made it easier.

Untill next time. :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
I'm sorry but we have a two volksrod limit here. Please send one of your existing volksrods to me....either one, your choice.

The new project looks great.:thumbsup:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Charlie, you can't have another until the ZimRod vacates the Bugdust compound!

Tile guy, you had me worried for a your 4th pic at the start of your build, I thought maybe you were grafting that boat to the 61... this is a much better direction! LOL

markh December 4th, 2011 09:51 PM

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Like the truck also. Keep it up!

Number1tileguy December 5th, 2011 09:27 PM

Re: My 61' Volksrod
Charlie, I tried to shove a volksrod in one of those post office boxes (you know if it fits it ships) but no luck, I guess you'll have to make do with the Zim rod and the buses for now :grin:

Al Low Ha, I tried but the boat just through the lines off.

Guys thanks, I get humbled and inspired by all the builds that I have seen here on Volksrods, There are truly some fine car builders and great group of people here. :bow::bow::bow:

So I played around with how much to section out of the car, I started with laying a 2 x 4 down to see what it would look like but the wood color just through the picture off then I found some black cardboard and cut it down to fit, first I tried 3" then 3 1/2" and ended up with a 4 1/2" strip I think that is what I'm going to section out of the car.

Then I had some fun and played with some tires and rims that I have to put on the volkstruck.

Now I can start planning out the section job, I think I will start with the doors first then the body. (cut, weld & grind) :grin:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
looking good!
like the truck too btw

Number1tileguy December 11th, 2011 07:46 AM

Re: My 61' Volksrod
I started the sectioning, I decided to go with about 4 1/2" out of the body and start with the passenger door. :sawzall:

I made a cardboard template to help me keep the door lines stright.

Then it was time to move on to the B pillar.

C pillar.

This is where I'll stop for now, next step finish the fitting of the door then cut and fit the door tops.
There are still alot of things I'm trying to work out and deciding what to do, one step at a time.
I am also trying to decide if I should run a swing arm, irs or even a reduction type of trans. :unsure::grin:

Untill next time.... :thumbsup::thumbsup:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
not to hyjack to badly, but how do you like the eastwood tools. I see you have the plasma cutter. Did you get the welder too?

back to the thread..

Number1tileguy December 12th, 2011 06:00 AM

Re: My 61' Volksrod

I don't have the Eastwood welder but my buddy (67utahrat) dose.
I have used his welder when I have gone over to help him out on his build, I am very impressed on the quality of the welder and you can't beet the price.
As for the plasma cutter this is the first plasma cutter I have ever used, out of the box it performed as I expected and I am also impressed with it as well.

Hope this helps out.:thumbsup:

Re: My 61' Volksrod
What is your plan for the lower door hinge?
Raising it as a part of the lower A-pillar or bringing the heater channel up along with it?
