The columns are only held by the upper bracket and the other end simply connects to the steering box. There is a small grommet where it goes through the firewall, but that is it. You might want to look at getting a superbeetle or a Porsche 914 column as they are both shorter and use universal joints. Since you're fabbing so much, a column mount shouldn't be that hard. If you need to, you could stick a heim joint over the shaft and have it supported on the body or frame somehow.
