Fan Rubbing - Cut-Weld-Drive Forums

Any one have the problem of the fan rubbing the back side of the shroud? I took all the shim out and it still rubs. Are fans all the same thickness? Are there different thicknesses? It was working just fine til I had a little issue with bolts coming loose and the the fan getting stuck and screwing shit up.

So I have a fan out of a different shroud and I put it in the one that is in the car and it rubs. Getting pissed. Anyone help me out here?

A dog house fan is wider than an earlier model. Are all 3 pieces there on the backing plate? Should be the plate that sits on the alt/gen, then a round spacer and then the plate with the vent pointing down.

All 3 pieces are there, I will have to double check that the vent is pointing down. The fan shrouds are the same type. I dont know if it rubbed in the other shroud tho.

once I had to put a beer can shim between the stand and the gen to make a rub go away

Are you sure it's rubbing, or could it be the generator bearing?

I was thinking my fan was rubbing on something, but it doesn't bother me so it's just gonna hafta rub until I feel like taking it all apart again
It started rubbing when I had to replace my generator with an alternator because the voltage regulator went out, the alt has an internal regulator
I think it's the rear bearing in my alternator, it's been sitting since 97 when I blew the engine in my rail buggy
I think from all the dirt & water that got inside it rusted or just corroded it, so as long as it works I'm not gonna fuck with it until I have another reason to take it off

Yeah its the fan rubbing on the shroud. There are 2 rows of tabs that hold the fins in place. The outside row is all shiny on the ends and there is a wear mark on the inside of the shroud. Im done screwing with it til saturday.

My buddy has a stock pile of fans so I am going over there on saturday to do some measuring to see if I can find a slightly thinner fan. I dunno what else to do.

I had the same problem on a 1600 duel port,ended up loosening the alt strap and pulling the alt forward on the stand till the rub stopped,had to silicone a small nut between the stand and the lip on the alt to keep it from working it's way back but it's been running this way now for about 6 months without issue.

Hmmm, I will have to see what I can do. I gotta get this back on the road soon. Daily driving my suburban is killing me in gas.

I had the same problem when I put the 1641 in the 67 in.
I finally used a Cardboard peice - folded it in half
and put it between the Alt and stand. I also noticed that the shroud
was able to move ever so slightly so tightened the side screws
with a pair of vice grips. You can also try moving that strap
a little forward or back. For some reason it makes a difference.
mice still rubbed ever so slightly but went away after I put some miles on it.

Ok, sweet. I will check it out saturday. Seems weird that a shim between the alt and the stand would stop it from rubbing, weird. I will give it a whirl tho.

Ok, worked o nthis problem this weekend. I had the backing plate in wrong, vent pointing up, but the fan was also to thick. I went to my buddies and we put the calipers top a couple of them. one was 1.26" and one was 1.23 inches. I opted for the 1.23" thick. I got it installed, no more rubbing. She is running like a top now.
