Default Three ring Binder

A lot of you know me. Others have no clue who I am. So to give a little insight for those who don't, I'm the biggest asshole on this site. Unless of course you count Nickster, but eventually got banned and later passed away so by default you're left with me.

Maybe I'm getting old, or just growing up a little (God I hope it's not the latter...) but I'm tired of seeing quality work overlooked by people who don't "get it" in favor of sub par work that for some odd reason is considered "cutting edge". You're recreating looks that were found 50-90 years ago. Hardly what I would call cutting edge. Since I can't reach out and bitch slap some sense into any of you through my computer, there is no way to convince you otherwise.

And I'm tired of hearing how expensive everything is. It's not our fault that America runs on Capitalism. Every one wants to make money in this world. That's why they are in business. So you can either shut up, pay their price, and fuel the fires of industry by continuing to build the same cookie cutter cars that so many of you call "cutting edge", or you can brake free of the stereotypical bonds you have placed upon yourself and build what you want instead of trying to fill a mold.

By now, anyone still reading this is either thinking of a way to try and flame me, taking offense because without me even typing your name, you feel that I'm talking directly to you, or you are wondering what in the hell I'm talking about and are willing to continue reading with an open mind. I really don't care which is the case. To me your insults are like water off a duck's back. If you think I was talking about you, maybe I was. But, if I sparked even the slightest bit of interest in the deepest, darkest recesses of your mind and you want to see how to actually build something that will be unique, please feel free to continue reading. Those of you who just want to fuck up every thread that's not about you, piss off. We don't need or want you in this thread.

I titled this thread Three Ring Binder because that's where my projects start, in a three ring binder/notebook. Everything I do goes into these notebooks. I have several on the bookshelf filled with every idea, good or bad, that was conjured up while at work, at the in-law's, lying in bed at 2:00 a.m.... Every measurement, every wiring schematic, every torque on every bolt... it's all in there. So if you are a fly by the seat of your pants kind of builder, maybe this thread isn't for you either.

I'm heading out to WORK on my project now, but I will be back to start updating this thread in a bit.

Slam it, paint it flat black and throw it on earlies!
Is it done yet?
What is a superbeetle?
It'll buff out.
You suck!

Okay, now that we got those out of the way....
I have an orange notebook that I had through the past 2 years of grad school. There are a lot of class notes in there but even a lot more drawings of custom shifter linkages, superbeetle spindles on hairpins, component sources and price comparisons, crazy stuff you guys have said to do, component specs and dimensions, heim joint angles, semaphore wiring, clutch cable routing, guage cluster designs, parking brake leverage figures etc....
The notebook is getting flimsy but I keep drawing in it. Working on the front suspension today and redesigning the linkage...again.
Some things may not be original, but they are original to me and something I've never tried before. You know I'll come to you guys for advice since you're all sick and twisted...but knowledgable!
Gotta get back to scribbling and figuring out where to create a pivot for the front hairpins without binding...

It is what it is. An on going thread covering everything from project conception to finished product. I don't even own this vehicle yet or even have it in my possession, but the deal has been made. I should be picking it up within the next week or two.

But, as I stated before, the project is already completed in a 3" thick three ring binder. I already know every part # that will need to be purchased, every part that will need to be found in salvage yards (and where they are), and every part that will have to be made. I've been planning this build for several years, and yes it will still be a few years before the finished product rolls out of Smash Alley.

So, step one in deciding to build a project vehicle... What do you want?

Fill as many pages with every little detail you want the end result to have. Not just this paint and those tires and wheels. Get creative! You are building a vehicle of your design, this is not the time to decide what your skills can and can't do. You'll be surprised at what all you can accomplish once you have a clear picture of where you want to end up.

Research! Not "use the search function"... Not everything that can be done to a vehicle is contained here. Vehicles have been customized for over 50 years, this site is only 10 years old. When I started building Alteisen, I didn't look here for everything. I went to the H.A.M.B. because they are considered the premiere site for what I wanted. I didn't ask a bunch of questions that I knew would creat road blocks either. I read! Then, after gaining a decent grasp on what I wanted, I asked for clarification on their topics. I offer did this in PM's to get answers from the source instead of every other swinging dick with a keyboard.

Ok, so I've beat that horse enough and it won't be covered again.

Step two: where are you gonna creat your masterpiece? Do you have a garage, shop, carport, tarp stretched between some trees? Do you live somewhere that they will not allow you to work on cars? These are all things that need to be considered and all can be overcome.

I have Smash Alley, an 18' x 18" detached garage. It's not huge, but I make it work. When you really want someting, there are no hurdles that can not be overcome. So today, part of my process to build another vehicle is to get Smash Alley back in condition to work in. Over the past few years, we have just used the shop for storage. So there are 30 some odd totes full of Christmas stuff, winter coats, and VW parts setting in the floor, along with all the original baseboards from our house, and two previous builds. There isn't room to walk in here. Well, my obvious next step is to clean it.... And that's where I am at the moment.

Looking forward reading more and seeing how your mind and thought process work.

Alteisen is stored against the south wall, the Manx was tied in the rafters, and the '23 T is on top of the rafters. And now the Christmas stuff is there as well. Creative storage.....

I'm going to be buying a scanner soon. I'll scan some of my stuff in, figure out how to properly post pictures (I know how it just locks up on me sometimes) and show you troublemakers how I go from idea to scribble to sketch to AutoCAD to build. BEERcobra and Joegyver know my sickness so I'll share it with all of you soon!
