Default Newbie Chick here
Re:: Diving into my

Well.. I'm no newbie to driving VWs... but building one.. YES I AM!
About me: Grew up driving a 67 Baja that could out mud all the guys in my little podunk High School. Still have it and love to drive it still. BUT Dad has his name on that title so I bought my own!!!
Recently found a 69 Beetle and hope to give it a little Volksrod lovin! I've got ideas and inspirations but NOT A CLUE as to go about it.
Hope i dont post too many ignorant questions.. I promise to use the "search" function first ;-)
Anyway... here is what she looks like now. I'm going to go pilfer thru the member pics and drool over the great work out there.
Pic on the left is new 69 project and pic on right is the reason I've been in love with VWs since i was `12. Granted that was a few years back (no making fun of the high school picture)

Progress is slow, Hwy Patrol came out and did the title inspection so i can at least get some paperwork done. She's unloaded and just waiting for her turn to hit the shop.
I've been scouring the member albums but i get serious "shiny chicken" syndrome with all the great builds.
I'm sure you all can help me find members that have done a permanent topless with a chopped windshield (Depending on what KS hgwy regs are). My next step is getting ready to peel the top off of her (feel like i should throw some mardi gras beads at her when it happens)

HA! She's finally in the shop!!! Unfortunately its only because there is a storm with hail in it headed our way. Pretty sure she'll get kicked out before i can even get out there! So i just keep doing what "girls" do best... shop for parts and work on the budget.

Spent the day lighting things on fire and going thru the boxes of parts from the 69. Tons of parts I dont need and missing parts I do. Oh the fun when someone else starts on a project and abandons it! Oh well, i'll have sh!t to add to the "for sale" thread soon.
Did find something really exciting though....
19in wheels.jpg
Vintage 19" wire wheels! I think i may be in love. Go ahead and break my heart if you think they'll be too tall. ((I can take it *sniff* but only because i found smaller ones too))

I said it would be slow... i wasnt kidding!
Most recent progress:
-Extender is on its way ((Thank you Doug))
- Ordered misc parts that we needed (seriously... didnt have floor pan bolts and needed pan gasket)
- Got my oficial Coalition plate in the mail (Thanks Steve)

Other than that... slow slow slow. BUT Had Dad check out some of the builds on here and i think he's feeling a little more prepared (Think he shares my love for Wazabug, Rat Patrol & numerous others)

Well its been a day since i've been on here or even out to the shop! Since the last time i was updated i've:
-found out that my awesome wire spoke wheels are no good so that was a huge downer.
- got all the glass out of her and managed to break the windshield. Ugh but all the other glass came out perfect and will likely become replacement for the Baja.

Tomorrow i hope to get the body set off and lay out a plan for bracing the body. I dont have much more hope than that.

Well, day 2 of actually getting to do some work. Not much though.
We hauled the 3 sets of old wire spoke wheels up to the shop to take off and cut tires off to see if they were usable and I think we might have at least one pair for the front!! I swear i now HATE Wards Riverside tires!! But nothing a sawzall and pry bars cant fix..........

Wheels 007.jpg

Wheels 009.jpg
Now they just need cleaned up... we'll see what we've got here.
Time to scour thru the photos and posts for how and where to cut on the front apron.

Well not much going on, i've done little things on my own (sand blasting, prime and paint, removed just about everything i can on my own) and now i wait for Haying season to be over so i can get dad out of the pastures to help!
I blasted the Kelsey Hayes Bent SPokes last weekend and got them to the tire shop to be checke out! They are a go!!!
KH blasted.jpg they've got a little wiggle in them but for the age and as light as the front end is... they'll be just fine!

Also found a body for donor metal on our property (yeah who forgets they have a VW in the pasture??) So here he is in his weed filled glory.
Pasture find.jpgPasture find2.jpg

Also scored some steel for bracing (free) so my dad is running out of excuses.... time to GO TOPLESS!!

Didnt do a whole lot today but did get a few bolts back in the pan so we can weld in the bracing to cut the top off. Managed to clock myself in the head 2x with a ratchet! Yeah i'm a girl with tools... i'm slick like that! Hurt!

Other than cussin at the damn thing because its a bitch to line up I got out to the barn and drug out the original hood to my 67 Baja... looks damn good on Bettie if I do say so:
June 27 car 012.jpg
ALso sad and chatted with dad about the wheels.. and the adapter dilemma.... ugh
June 27 car 013.jpg
But they're gonna look sick!

Unfortunatly thats all... and I wont be giving any updates until late July because I'm GOING ON VACA!!! When i get back my dad is going on a little trip too so we have about 3 weeks of no shop time ahead of us. Sad.. buti need a vacation like I need right now! Goodnite

Officially the most progress made in one day with "Bettie".

I'm offically in love with a 4.5" angle grinder... its true~
Also got to try my hand at welding for the first time. I suck but its a start.
Temp bracing in, front cut, and now she's topless!

SUch an awesome day, now to figure out my next move.

Spent another Sunday afternoon in the shop! FINALLY!

Now please.. dont tell me I'm completely stupid for doing this but we're cutting out the heater channels to lay in permanent bracing.... if i missed a post or 13 about how this is NOT a good idea i'm gonna scream. But passenger side cleared out and drivers side half way.

Managed to stumble upon a listing on Craigslist this morning for a 1500 dp, complete and ready to go. He said "make offer" so i low balled him and he countered with $500. I jumped! So now i dont have to try to figure out what the hell i'm doing by rebuilding a motor!
Now if i can just keep dad from putting it in the baja!
