Default My 66' Volkstruck

I figured it's time to get off my lazy butt and finally start a build thread on my 66' Volkstruck

I had knee surgery on Tuesday 6/12/12 so I'm sitting back in my chair trying to recoup, I injured it back in March and it's taken me this long to raise the white flag and surrender to the thought of surgery.

I have not progressed on any of the projects like I'd hope I would have, but I still have made some progress and since nobodys knocking on my door for a "Lazy Slacker Award" It's time to get you all familiar with my 66'

This is what it looked like when I broght it home.

The car was in a rear engine fire so what else is there to do?? Make a Volkstruck...

This is where it's at right now.

So over the next few days I'll try to get you caught up on how I got to this point, who knows I might even get you all up to date on the other projects.

Untill next time...

Dude... You are a crazy builder of projects. Everytime I check in your building another project, this will be fun to check in on, plus, I do want to know about the other projects as well.

Thanks guys....

So after I brought the 66' home I gave it a good going over, there was more rust then I thought and damage from the fire, so I decided to make a Volkstruck

I have always wanted to try a truck project so this will be the perfect candidate. (Now I have an idea for my next truck project)

The plan:
1. A true 4" chop
2. Add a 30' Ford modle A bed
3. Cut out the heater channels
4. Channel the body over the pan
5. 10" D-Bugs extension
6. Make it an extended cab with small side windows
7. Patina paint job with door logos

Removing fenders, bracing, laying out the chop and of course cutting it all up.

That's it for now, next up the chop....

Until next time...

Normally, I like to rag on people for cutting up fixable cars. That is because most won't finish them or screw them up beyond fixing. You on the other hand will complete this and it will be badass.

Looking good.

I didn't think I was talking trash at all...and we all know why the volkstruck didn't get finished...or chopped. I wouldn't have finished it if it was mine, it would have got sold!

Sorry, back to your regularly scheduled volksrod build thread.

Nice idea with the rear quarter windows. Have some shots showing better details of how that was made? What did you use for rear cab panel and the rear corners? All the shots are from the side or front. I like the rssults so far.

Okay, Charlie & Dick, don't make me go hockey mom on you guys No, I know it's just some good old fashion give each other a hard time (and it's ok with me, whats life if you can't have a little fun) I've been around here long enough to see how projects come and go, how we would like to see all projects finished, with positive outcomes. Life gets in the way, we may surprise ourselfs or get surpised and I'll leave it at that.... (Ok time to get off the soap box and get some work done)

Guys, Thanks for all of your comments and encouragement, you all make me strive to build great cars, and keep the Volksrod community proud and strong.

38Chev, I got the rear cab section out of a 65' small window Chevy pickup, I cut, shortened, added some leftover VW sheet metal and pieced together to get what I have and hope to get some pic's up for you soon.

Now on to the chop True 4" layout.

The roof just sitting there to get a feel on what it might look like.

First test fit for the Ford bed.

So I'm going to have to do a lot of work to get this thing to sit lower

On with the show

65' Chev small window back cab section donor.

More bracing so I can remove the body from the pan and start the channeling.

Heater channels gone, making new ones and re-locating the cab on the pan.

Trimming the bed:

Back on to the pan.

Now it's starting to look good, I like the lines of the bed with the cab....

For the back of the cab I just used some 1" round tubing and bent it by sticking it in a fence until it was the shape that followed the body line.

The back cab/pan bracing.

Some fun with the dash.

A present from the grandkids.

More later....

Dick, Getting in would be the hard part but once you make it you'd fit (I'm 6' 1" 220 lbs) the challenge is trying to get in it, I'm thinking of installing a removable steering wheel to make it a little easier.

Jeff, I tried to sell off the grandkids and one held me down while the other two kicked me in the head and groin (ages 7, 4 & 2) I guess I'll have to find some cash elsewhere...

Casey, Thanks man, I'll catch up with you soon.

93YJ and the rest of the V-Rod family, "Thank You"

I just spent over an hour putting up the latest update (I'm a hunt and peck typer) and it got lost in cyber space so I'll try tomorrow...

The grandkids

Now you see what I'm dealing with, the little one is getting hungry. L-R Noah my little handicapped guy, Ava his little sister and Isaiah the little one man wreaking machine

More truck pictures, Mounting the bed.

Now my custom built fuel tank with a jaguar locking gas cap

Back outside to see how it's looking.

The cab to bed lines are looking good, I still will play with the ride height to get it sitting a little lower, at this point I thought about building a roadster but living in Utah it would limit my driving to fair weather days so I will put the top back on I'm just trying to do as much fab work on the inside as I can before I weld the top on because it's easier to get in and out, That's it for now....
