Default want to make a homemade ragtop

so here is my idea, I would like you all to let me know if you think it will work. Obviously first measure and cut hole. Next I want to make a wooden framed top similar to that sometimes seen on rat rod model T's. so I will sandwich wood trim above and below the edges of the hole. and install permanent cross bows. My main question is how weak will the roof be when I cut it, and will 1/8 - 1/4" wood trim be enough to re-strengthen the metal of the roof. I plan on using aluminum rivets to hold everything tight.

wooden trim 3/16 thick
metal of roof
wooden trim 3/16 thick

held together by rivets

I used 1/2 inch square tubing on mine so the roof would keep its shape and be stronger. There is a lot of flex in the bodies when driving. I made my top insert frame from L shaped steel and covered it.

cut the hole about 3/4 of an inch under size all the way around. Add your wood (although flat stock on the under side would be stronger) and take a soft mallet and fold the 3/4" extra down to make a flange. It'll be very strong. You are basically making a hammer form.. http://mgaguru.com/mgtech/restore/pics2/2939.jpg for more indepth forming... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...-tight.377535/

Also, it would not hurt to form the metal to the shape of the roof BEFORE cutting it. make some templates of the top side curve... Depending on how big (how close the edges are to the body line) the hole is will dictate how much it'll flex. Closer to body line = stiffer...

I would opt for sq. steel tubing instead of wood, however I think it could be done in wood. If you don't mangle the roof when cutting it, you should have good edges to work with.

You might be best served by using metal bows though, with flattened ends. Maybe with some sorta stops on each end to control the arch...

I thought about doing a removable roof top that looks like a rag top. I had 2 different ideas for it.
First idea was to make a FG skin on top of the roof larger then hole would be, then cut the hole frame it up. Then cover it in vinyl and make a inner flap with snaps or something to hold it down and seal it up.
Second one was the same thing but to cut a skin out of another roof, larger then the hole I plan to cut......

Just thought I would share.

Take alook at mexican kits they used.. or even this http://www.slidingragtops.com/Volksw...e-Ragtops.html

Look at how its made.. and installed then look at your bug and figure it out.. Sometimes the best way to figure out something is to see how it works and then reverse engineer it from using pictures...
