Default Need some help with figuring out an issue.

Okay heres a problem my mum has been experiencing with her bug Its been happening for a few months now to her 2001 Mexican bug.
(I've searched the samba for answers and have come up empty handed)
When she turns on the light switch the gen light pops up and the car surges and the engine actually slows down.. its a total power surge. I thought it was the belt.. replaced it. it helped.. because the old belt was quite worn down.. However the problem is still there. it only occurs if the lights are turned on, and while they're on the gen light is on. Very annoying

SO I got a multimeter and tested the car while I ran.. Sometimes I got nothing from the thing or sometimes I got 22-27 volts coming from the terminals.. Once again sometimes I got nothing but I know there was electricity going through it.

The only four things I can think it is.. is A) Alternator in the car is going.. its the original 2001 mexican alternator from the factory. B) Its the four year old battery in the car... modern shit doesn't seem to last long C) Wiring issue! D) leprechauns are fucking with the motor when its in the pull barn...

Sooo maybe its not D , but I also doubt its C that leaves A or B since I Was getting over 20 volts from the alternator at times Not sure if i'm an idiot when using the multimeter Anybody have anything similar happen to you in the past.. I have a few generators and a alternator lying around.. its just replacing it is gonna be a bitch... I'm hoping its something other then the Alternator.. like the battery.. or a fuse or something retardedly simple.

not 100% sure, but usually if it is the alternator going out your lights will brighten with the revs. Just make sure if you swap it out you replace an alternator with an alternator, the gens had an external regulator under the backseat.

I'm voting for leprechauns. I can hardly get any of my VWs to run and I'm sure that is the problem.

Always was wondering wtf that thing was under the rear seat... Now I know! Good thing... Gonna have to see how to hook that sucker up for the rebel wiring harness in my 1966... Also What size is the bolt to get off of the fan part of a generater.. I have a spare alternator that came with the 1966.. its a motorola one.. with a built in regulator. .soo I have one! I just need to get parts off of a generator to put on it... I don't know what size the sucker is.

Sorry if I'm seeming quite nooby.. it's because I am.
Hey atleast I admit I'm young and stupid!

Admitting you're "young and stupid" is a good thing. Then, when you're older, it's easier to admit that you're old and, um...Jeff, help me out here.

Also today we did the headlight test thing with the reving the motor.. and no change in brightness.. granted its a 2001 mexi bug so who knows... Its a different evolutionary branch of the bug tree... Still getting the battery tested is a priority.. or maybe just straight up replacing it.. .Its been dead mutiple times over the winter and I know for a fact my mom bought it on sale from the local autostore in st.paul before we moved. Yeah.. their own name brand... so needless to say its not the highest quality thing out there

A 'PULL' barn is what you pull your projects into...Um, you don't have four (4) of those skates, do you?

Wish I did... that'd make a great youtube video.. especially if bottle model rocket engines were attached to a set.
