parts car is scrapped!

the 66 is in the garage getting all new brake parts...

IRS clip from the parts car installed, complete with engine.

my goal is to have this car driving to terryville...
current total investment is about $600, and i should have everything i need to do the job. just need to take the time to put her together.

ive been grinding away at the convertible this week. i'm trying to get the bottoms of the heater channels patched up, the new convertible reinforcement rails installed, and the body back down on the chassis before another round of snow makes it difficult to move stuff around. i started on monday, i'm hoping to be done and have the body back on the chassis today (wednesday)

it has been awhile since i updated this thread, and seeing as i'm unemployed (yet again), i have time to do so.

i sold/partial traded the convertible to bugroadster, and on the same trip went to see classicGMjunkie to pick up his project in another partial trade deal. i was happy with how everything turned out, i hope they are too!

so... this is currently what i have in my stable:

my 63 ragtop baja has been running around for quite awhile :)

this is ugly betty, my '66 single cab. she runs pretty decent, and i've started driving her around somewhat regularly. still needs some body repair, but i'll get to that someday. i'm currently in the process of a temporary paint job.

this is the car i picked up from classicgmjunkie. i haven't taken the time to figure out what year it is yet, it's a 70-ish. he had no title for it, but that isn't a problem for me here in CT. i have an oval clip to go in it, so i'm hoping to do something with that very soon. the car is bagged, but i'm not confident in the design used for the bag mounts in the back (poor welding and poor choice of steel... not GMjunkie's work), so i'm planning to redo it a little better.

and the last 2 cars that are here at the moment...

my wife's 68 is not really holding up very well. it was a slap together restoration when we got it, and after a few years it's really starting to come apart. the body is just not in very good shape. it runs well. it could be fixed, but its deteriorated to the point where we've talked about maybe converting it to a dune buggy.

aaaand this is my 56 oval. it is currently the low man on the totem pole and ive been entertaining tire kickers and trade offers on it. it has the original engine which is cool... but samba restorations are sooo not my thing. so i figure maybe it should go to someone else, especially since i dont have time for it...

time for my somewhat non regular update...

the baja is still running but the motor is a little tired from pushing those 31's around all the time. this winter it's probably time for a new set of rings and a valve job. the pushrod tubes are leaking a bit as well, so i haven't been driving it much.

the single cab is finished and also road-worthy, though i really need to get a working gas gauge. i've taken it to a few cruise nights and putted around town a few times with it, but i don't drive it nearly as much as i should.

the slambug is in the garage and i have been slowly working on it. this weekend i picked up a '65 for parts, which means i got an early hood, front and rear aprons for it. i had patched the center section of the roof, but am not happy with all the bondo that had to go into it... so i saved the roof off the 65 to do a full roof graft at the pillars. no chop top though. beyond my expertise and patience level... and frankly i don't like the chopped look.

i have a deal pending on the oval... to trade for a rotary engine and vw adapter. wonder what i can put that in...

beet awhile since i updated... so heregoes...

still have the single cab. runs pretty well though i should drive it more. one of these days i will get the ebrake hooked up in it so i will feel more comfortable with it.

my baja was down for the count needing the engine checked into. put in some fresh rings, cleaned up the heads, and got it back running about a month and a half ago.

the wife is gone, as is her '68. can't keep 'em all i guess.

i recently picked up a 54 oval body earmarked to go on classicGMJunkie's air ride chassis... just because ovals are cool.

aaand i also scored a Thing off craigslist, which is what i have been tearing into most recently. the new floors are in it, just need to be seam sealed. new brake parts are on the way. and the engine i got from bugroadster will be going into it.

been working on the air ride bug lately... the old body was 72 that was hit in the nose, so i didn't feel bad about cutting for clearance. but i have to redo all the air ride stuff in order to not hack up the new 54 body.

now we have on the narrowed beam...

disc brake kit
2" drop spindles
tie rod flip
modded air shocks for bigger lines
relocated shock mounts (another bar to be added here, not pictured)

here's another shot of the front end. added a brace to it, just need to drop the body back on to make sure everything clears before welding it all up. the air shocks in the front are working great, the 3/8 line to the shocks makes 'em air up quick!

trying to get the air ride stuff sorted so i can throw the body on before the Thing comes home from being sandblasted in a few weeks...

one of these days i'm gonna fix all these dead picture links.

anyway... been working on the 74 thing this winter, hopefully have it ready for paint come springtime. every panel on it needs SOMEthing... so been trying to work my way around the car. the biggest job was replacing the driver's side rocker, which had been heavily damaged and filled with bondo someday long ago...
