Thumbs up

Dudes -

Toying with another project, A friend has informed me he picked me up a 72 Beetle, in decent shape but has bad floors, haven't seen it yet. I've had an old magazine article since I was a teenager from "Volkswagen Greats" that covers a tube platform frame built by Kelmark that puts a SBC and Corvair trans in the rear seat of a Beetle. Have a Manta Mirage kit car with and extra transaxle taking up space in my garage that's crying for this project.

Anyone seen one of these frames? The article I have shows the bare frame in good detail, but hoping to collect any info I can find on them, would like to find the tubing sizes and wall thicknesses if at all possible.

If anyone wants to see the article let me know and I'll scan the pages and post them....

How about pictures of other V8 mid-engined Beetles?

Oh Yeah, almost forgot, anyone seen a Corvair transaxle narrowed, prostreet style?

Thanks
Rick

go to my site: www.runtrod.com/gallery and search for "mid", I have a few picts of midengine setups. You may want to check A&E chassis, it's 1 guy that makes custom midengined VW chassis during his off season farming. Really nice guy, talked to him a few times years ago.

I have had a couple of the midengine frames. They were made by a company
called Midengine Engineering. I have the blue prints to build the Chevy engine/Corvair
trans setup and the Caddy/Toronado auto trans midengine one.
I had the Chevy/Corvair tranny one in a bug and i would not recommend it. The
Corvair trans is made to run backwards from its normal rotation, it has very limited
life behind a small block chevy engine. I have a Caddy based frame here now that uses a
500 cube big block with an auto trans that came out of a 67 Eldorado with a switch pitch
converter. It is a much beefier setup and also gives about 10 or 12 inches more room
inside the car.
The main frame is 2x4 rectangle tube with 1/8 wall. It uses a beetle front end.
Rear end can be set up with Corvette or Corvair trailing arms for either frame.
Pic is of the Caddy/Toronado setup

Talk about pulling a thread from the past out of your ass... Bad thing is, I remember this conversation. Seem to recall an issue with people wanting to contribute because of different bullshit.

I looked through all my stuff and all I could find are the blueprints for a front engined V-8 chassis. No mid-engine stuff anymore. Sorry.

I saw a mid engine V8 Bug on Youtube using that set up. Looked stock until you looked closer.

Thanks for the replies guys. Thats my son and his '69 in my avatar. Been toying with the idea of toronado trans/sbc in the back seat of a bug for years. Love the idea of a killer sleeper. Figured SOMEBODY must have done it by now? I havent been able to find the plans for the Bill Porterfield/mid engineering set up. May be just easier to build a front engine car

I did a 47 Ford sedan with an early Toronado 455 Olds in the back. Just cut the entire Toro frame and all out and fit it to the old Ford frame. Took a bit of wok, but wasn't all that hard. I think the later model Toros used the GM corporate small blocks, so a similar approach should work for you as the package would be more compact ?
