The past few weeks I've been helping a friend work on his 62 Corvair, it's rough, but it runs nice, he's gonna rebuild the carb's on it soon, it should run better after that

I told him if he ever wants to get rid of it, he should sell me the engine, he asked me why I wanna torture myself, I said for the same reason you bought it, plus it has 2 extra cylinders than my VW engine does

Let me bump this back up some with an update on my "Operation X" clutch disc issue.

Issue shown a few pages back on page 8, solid clutch disc hits flywheel bolts.
I temporarily used an offset spring center disc to get it rollin' by my deadline...

Solution, called Clarks Corvair parts, sent the the pics, and it was suggested, remove the Corvair flywheel bolt ring, and install new flywheel bolts and thinner individual washers.

I was having a transaxle issue, mainly tired syncros, but it was still pushing the car fine, just maybe with big beads of a sweat on it at times....

Wanted to upgrade from a 4.38 to at least a 4.13, anyway, soooooo...

Cleaned and disassembled a 68 long axle swing axle I had laying around, welded the 3/4 syncro hubs, , changed over to 67 long axles so I didnt have to space the drums...,a total reseal and simply smoked it over fairly good..

Also....finally.... installed the new flywheel bolts which SOLVED the whole disc problem...
Currently, undergoing a more milder exhaust conversion, to tone down on the glass pack side exahust harshness in my ear....s.
I picked up a pair of Case tractor mufflers, which hopefully will be just the right sound..

CMD (or anyone else who may know),

Do you know of anyone who makes a blowproof bellhousing for the Corvair engine in a front engine configuration? Like your dragster, for example?

I'm contemplating doing something similar, but can't find anything as far as a steel bellhousing through Lakewood, JW, etc.

Thanks!

What transmission do you plan to mate to your front mounted Corvair engine?

More than likely a Saginaw 3 speed with first locked out, so it just shifts 2-3. But as long as there is something to bolt to the block, the 'adapter' to the trans can be a flat piece of steel with the correct pattern drilled in, correct?

Well then .... I suppose you plan to reverse rotate it???...

You can use a universal scatter shield or make one of your own... Its pretty much just steel plate.

Another option is to use a VW adapter.. and then make the conversion to a transmission of your choice.
There are VW to GM adapters..
So basically an adapter...placed on an adapter...

The biggest issue from what I understand (haven't tried) of using traditional transmissions and the Corvair bell housing is the input shaft length..
With a Corvair transaxle (and vw) the input shaft is much longer than a traditional transmission.

I did not know that about the input shaft... Thanks for that tip.

I need to get my hands on a Corvair engine. From there, it's all just shaping metal. ;)

Sorry.......I haven't been on site for a while.

No one ever made a Corvair manual trans adapter,; that I know of. I made my own from a Lakewood blowproof bellhousing back half,( adjusted for input shaft length ) a flat 1/4 inch plate, and a 6inch wide 1/4 plate strip about 3ft long wrapped around the corvair bellhousing. Fairly easy, except for bending the strip in a circle. I used a torch and a tire machine! LOL Much easier ways now than 40 years ago. Legal in NHRA.

Thanks............

I used a similar setup on my other front engined Corvair powered racecars, only with a 400 Turbo trans, a Powerglide, and a Lenco.
This one used the Lenco:

As I built this car 40+ years ago; I don't have many photos, but what I do are on my PhotoBucket album that's listed at the bottom of the post. Most of the altered pictures are this same 90 inch wheelbase car in different colors and different drive train combinations, over the years, clear up to a blown Chrysler.

No.........sorry. I am usually busy building and driving, so posting isn't a priority.
There are some photos on my PhotoBucket album listed at the bottom of this post and I have lots of digital pictures stored if you would like to see anything specific. Thanks for your interest.
