To remove the front fork caps on Sherrie's '90 Virago a 17mm Allen wrench is required. Not having one that size, I dug into my bolt collection until I found one with a 17mm head, ran a nut down, then ran a quick bead with my MIG to keep the nut from backing off. Dropped the bolt head into the cap and with a 17mm deep socket & ratchet, threaded it out. This saved me a trip to the hardware store and the cost of a wrench.

a few years back I did something similar for a 22mm hex sleeve around the bike's spark plugs..

If you have a VW anything vintage aircooled... You should have a 17mm allen of one or more kinds... I have probably 4 "L shaped" Allen wrenches of different lengths and 2 different sockets.

But I admire anyone's ability to make a tool and get the job done using your brain and local materials. I get jealous of you guys that have Mig welding equipment...

Went to a yard sale and bought a 110v MIG welder (no bottle or regulator) for $20. Brought it home, opened it up, and found a spool of flex core in it. Plugged her in, put on the free Horrible Fright auto darkening helmet he gave me, and started goofing around. Took about half an hour, but a decade of welding rust fell off me and I remembered how to use one of these. I can't remember the brand name off the top of my head, but it has four heat settings and an infinitely adjustable wire speed, so it's no Horrible Fright special itself.

EDIT: It's a Telwin, made in Europe.

Yesterday I acquired a portable bicycle stand through the local bike shop down the street. He'd loaned me his while I worked on the following. Two weeks ago a neighbor threw away four rusty and neglected bikes, which I, of course, hauled home. (My first job out of the Army in '72 was as a bike mechanic.) Taking parts from the other two, I just got two of the mountain-type bikes going. Let's hear it for steel wool and cable lube! I'm giving them to a former employee and her boyfriend. Currently, he commutes to work on his skateboard and she on her push scooter. I deliver 'em tomorrow.

I suppose this fits in here, altho I've had this tool for about 6 years now I just finished assembling it this afternoon, I do need to cut the springs a little shorter but that's it
I should have taken some detailed pictures of it, but the only detail worth a picture was the plate that bolts to the bottom of my 12 ton bottle jack

It bolts to a 2" 2" pieces of square tube, the the has a 1" diameter shaft bolted to the bottom, I can slip larger diameter pieces over it if or when needed

Here is is completely assembled except for the springs, the lower yellow horizontal pieces are adjustable in 4" increments

The total height is 40" the width between the vertical columns is 18" & roughly 18" to 20" between the bottom of the jack & the lower work surface when all the way down

Gonna get its first Jobe sometime between tomorrow & the weekend when I put a front wheel bearing in Trina's car

Ron

Looks as good as the 2 presses I have... One is a HF 12 ton, the other a Northern Tool 20 ton... Once you paint that one (If you decide to)... it'll look better than my stuff for sure.

Well, the chrome is already flaking off the left hand Whitworth chisel I received yesterday via Fed Ex from Nigerian Prince Supply. I should have stuck with Harbor Freight...

Got a HF belt sander. I'll try it later. Time to go degrease some black pipe. Made a light and am working on a new table this afternoon.
