Default Shifter question

One of the many ideas I've had for my car is a custom shifter. So as nit to ruin the one already in the car, I mail ordered a cheesy stock shifter. The plan was to cut the shaft off and weld on a pair of Harbor Freight vise grips. Remove the adjustment screw and thread on a shifter ball.

Well, I must have forgotten that the stock shifter (68 pan) spins in the housing. No good for what I'm doing. Does anyone have a suggestion on a decent shifter that I can use without feeling bad about butchering?

Or do I just get a Scat Drag Fast and stfu?
