So what all do you have? I might have a little money in about 6 to 8 weeks, just not much
I guess I should have asked what you have that would fit in my Volksrod and is under $500, that would be the max I could spend, but then again I suppose I should buy a wire harness and a new exhaust before anything else, mine keeps getting louder every week from the potholes, I try to avoid them, but every week a new one developes or the existing ones get larger and deeper along my daily path
One a these days I'm gonna get pulled over for weaving trying to avoid them and the manhole covers, some of them are like hitting speed bumps

Hey gang, just wanted to give everyone a heads-up. We've been busy on this end. Today we bought a new house! We are officially moving to Traverse City, Michigan. Our new place sits on 7.25 acres of land, surrounded by cherry orchards and a nature preserve. We'll be moving as soon as we sell the house we are in. I'm having a 24 x 36 garage built next month too!: dancing:

Yeah I know, a few years before I built mine I helped a neighbor build a 24 by 24 pole barn, at the end of the summer it was full, that's why I built mine 24 by 32, then I met the guy with the scrapyard, I was just going to add a lean to roof on 10 feet wide by 32 long, then I learned there was several sheets of metal siding almost the same as what I had on mine, I took enough to do the ends and moved the original wall out and cut about 10 inches off it, so now it's 34 wide by 32 deep, the entire building cost me just under $6500 to build, that includes the 16 by 8 overhead door, the rear entry door and the double doors I put on the front of the addition, I got them from the free adds in the local news paper classified
I also did a lot of shopping around when I built my garage, bought all the lumber from one place, nails and fasteners from another, siding and trim from another, and roofing from another, I bet I spent 20 hours on the phone calling getting price quotes
It would have cost me $15,000 to have the original 24 by 32 building built minus doors, it would have been finished in less than a week, I picked up my building permit on September 11th 2001, I got a call that they were finalized and I could start building as soon as I picked them up, I sat around doing anything I could do without my building permits, I couldn't wait to get started, I had to have several changes made because they had just updated the building codes a few months before I droped them off in May of 2001, when I was parking to pick them up the just said on the radio about the first plane hitting the trade center, when I got to the 8th floor to pick up my permits everyone was crowded around a little 12 inch black and white TV, I watched the second plane hit live, my heart just dropped and skipped a few beats, my wife called me, they put her building on lockdown, she works for the federal gov, I went home and sat in front of the TV untill the 14th before I finally went out and got started, I had my final inspection September 30th 2002, the only help I had was my oldest son, he was 14 when we started
Then I made the mistake of hanging out at a scrapyard, I got some cool stuff, but I also got stuck bringing home a lot of stuff that was a package deal, if you want this you hafta take this that and all of that, I still have a mess but slowly it's getting better

Again sorry for rambling on

Ron

I would love to pull a permit and build for a couple of years... but where I am, they put deadlines on your build time based on the plans submitted and what is customary for a builder to complete... they double that and call it a dead line, and they will consider extending it due to health issues or unforeseen circumstances... but not by much. If I were to start a project, I'd have to finish it within too short of a time for me to do it all alone... and I could do it. It just takes time to put up walls and trusses alone... or build them in place or however one goes about it. I'd rather do it the Amish way... build a wall and raise it... build gussets and lift them into place... etc.. I live on a much smaller piece of property, but have room physically and by code, for about a 30 x 36 garage. If I had the shell built and dried in, I could do the rest as I gathered the dollars and cents. To start with I'd probably have to give up about 26 grand to get that done... and have limitations on height and style to some degree... Would likely be ablate decide structure materials, but the city is kinda weird on permanent buildings and wants them to go with the neighborhood styles/designs somewhat... low pitch roof and all...

I don't see any pictures, just a blank page

Either way a 6 inch vise is a nice score if it's in good shape

All the used milling machine vises I've ever come across all have holes in them and chunks milled out of them, years ago I bought a cheap 4 inch Kurt knock off vise that has a few holes in it and a spot milled into the bottom of it, I didn't do it any good by putting my own mark on the bottom of it, that's the only thing I don't like about the head on my milling machine, it has no adjustable stop, so I crank the table all the way down to keep from messing it up any worse than it is already

Tell ya's about my double score, we refinanced our 2nd mortgage and cut the monhly payment in half so we could buy a decent newer car for my wife to get back and forth to work, I've been driving her in my Volksrod, these streets are just tearing my Volksrod up, so last Monday my wife finally decided on a car, a 2014 Impala, we're the 3rd owner and it has all the maintenance history, it's been well taken car of, it has 69,788 miles as of today, we drove it home last Monday, now I can put a set of struts on the front of her old car and a wheel bearing and start working on my Volksrod, I might have the time to chop it and finish the custom floor pan I started years ago, so it's been one hell of a good week

Then last Thursday a friend I did a brake job on his car call and asked me if I wanted a radial arm saw, So I hooked up my trailer and picked it up, it's a 10 inch Craftsman radial arm saw, he owed me, called me one evening needing a front brake job on a 2001 Cavalier done asap after his girl friends car got totaled on her way home from work, wasn't her fault but they needed something to drive by morning, turns out the other driver didn't have a license or insurance, so I jumped in and went over and got his car fixed, he told me before hand that he didn't have any money to pay me, I said don't worry about it, plus he's never asked me for any help in the past, I've been in situations like that before, most of he time I spent a late night fixing one of our cars, he knows nothing about cars except how to drive them, but he came through, decent saw ounce I clean it up and figure out where to put it

And heres the puppy, already gained 4 pounds, he keeps me busy, never a dull moment for me any more, probably the best thing I've done because I have been getting lazy

We got the dog on July 22nd, July 23rd was the day our last dog passed away 7 years ago, so it was a gread day to add anothe addition to our family, my wife named him Shmitty because back when our boys were young and outside playing and I was busy working on something and dinner was ready she would walk out the door an yell "Smitty" and all 3 of us would make our way inside to eat

Oh yeah one last thing, this morning I met with my cousin and his friends, they all have breakfast at McDonalds every morning, it's right down the street from my doctors office, I stop by before every appointment, anyway he offered me a machining job, my cousin that has all the Hot Rods had a 9 inch narrowed read end put in his 57 Chevy, I'll be resplining the axles as soon as he gets them, one of his friends just picked up a complete dividing head with all the accessories for $200 at a maching shop auction yesterday, I can use it whenever I need it, I'll use it to do the axles and finish the dividing head I started building about 10 years ago or more

Some days everything just seems to fall right into place, this past week was one of them, every day went just right

Ron

Congrats on the new-to-you Chevy. From what I hear about them, in another 20k or so, she'll be broken in.

Well that's good news to me, it's gonna take a while for her to put 20k on it, her drive to and from work is right around 14.6 miles, add another 27 a week for trips to the store and the doctors and it will be broke in in about 3-1/2 years

I've only driven it once, I'm afraid I'll get spoiled because it rides like my mom's Cadillac CTS, so I'll stick to my Volksrod except when I'm working on it, I may get the time to chop the top after I put a wheel bearing on her old car, aka the Batmobile (Escort ZX2)
And to think she almost passed on this to get an 07 Hummer H3 with 100k, it was clean and well taken care of, and much cheaper, they just wanted more than we had down because of the miles it had, she's always wanted one of those, fits her too, she learned to drive at 13 in a 78 Jeep Cherokee and 100 achers
We did go over $50 a month more than we wanted to spend but that was for a 3 year warranty that covers everything but brakes, has roadside assistance and free rental car, the only bad thing is that it's white, all but 1 other car of her's have been black, but she can live with it

This was a huge score for us, our refridgerator has been in need of replacement for at least the last year, some times it would work great for a couple weeks, then next thing ya know everything in the freezer would be thawed out and bad, milk and eberything else would be just a few degrees below room temperature, we have a small chest type freezer in the basement so we started keeping everything down there and using a cooler and buying bags of ice, well after we got back from our first vacation in 11 years, 5 days in a cabin on Green River Lake in Kentucky, when I picked up all our mail I just set it on the table after looking for all the important stuff, yesterday morning I decided to go thru the rest of it, one envelope looked like a doctors bill, I opened it, turns out it was a refund check because we over paid, so we cashed it and went to Lowes to look at refridgerators, turns out they had a bunch of them set out on sale do to scratch and dents, the only catch was you had to take it home that day, the original price was $1400, we paid $449 plus tax, $5 more than the refund check, I called the few friends that I have dropped everything to help them with a car or whatever they needed, well, they all had something going on, the only one I believed is the friend who has helped me get most of my machines home, he has a truck with a lift gate on the back and works great for moving tall stuff, he was at an auction, his truck was at home but he had the keys with him, he ussualy leaves them in the truck, but lately stuff has turned up missing around his neighborhood, so we went home hooked my trailer up to my Volksrod and off we went, about an 18 mile round trip, because it wasn't on a pallet they couldn't use one of their electric fork lifts to put it in my trailer, so my wife and I along with a guy who worked there put it in my trailer, I have a set of long not so good ramps my son used for his Yamaha Blaster, just plywood and 2 by 2's on the edges, I brought several blocks and straps, we were able to push it up and in, I nailed wood around the bottom so it wouldn't slide, them strapped the hell of it, just as I'm wrapping the loose ends of the straps up the sky got scary dark, lightning and thundering, then the rain started as I was pulling out of the parking lot, it was pouring, in the curb lane the water was about 6 inched deep, my Volksrod wasn't liking it, I had to stop fast a couple times because some fools like to pull out in front of you, when I hit my brakes the front wheels lock up, it seems as if you start going faster, I was able to keep it under control using the EMERGENCY BRAKE (it was an emergency) we got home after about an hour, the sun was out at our house, but that's when the real work started, I couldn't find anyone to help us, so the 2 of us pulled the old fridge out, thats when I knew we were in trouble, I should have brought a tape measure, the new one was a few inches wider than our old one, that wasn2a big deal except getting it in the thru the door, after I removed both the screen door and entry door we only had a half an inch of clearance, we had to lift it up one step, turn it 90 degrees and up another step, I used a piece of 3/4 inch plywood and made a ramp, them put blocks under it, we got it in, we got home at 5, we finished getting it in and putting the doors back on around 11:30
At the store while we were loading it up several people stopped to take pictures, my wife took a short video just as I was finishing up before pulling ouy and you can see a flash of lightning, then the loud crackle of thunder, she even took a pic while it was raining, she was in her car following me, here's one after we got home, we make a great team, I know there isn't anything the 2 of us can't do, I know one thing for sure, I'm never gonna drop what I'm doing to help anyone except my friend Ben, he's the one who was at an auction, besides my wife he's probably the one and only person I'll consider a true friend, and I've only known him for about 13 years now, the rest that I have known since I was 5 years old are gonna hafta find someone else from now on

Again sorry for rambling on, but I tell it like it is, I only wish I could add stuff to make it more dramatic
Tonight we are going to a long time family friends who may dad grew up with, they live in a house with a great view of downtown Cincinnati and the Ohio River to watch the Riverfest fireworks, last weekend we went there to watch fireworks from the town of Ludlow Kentucky which right across from where they live, I could probably have called them to help, but I wouldn't ask them for anything, they're family

Have a Fantastic Holiday weekend everyone, and be safe

Ron

"I only wish I could add stuff to make it more dramatic." Like what? Maybe an encounter with the Loch Ness monster while driving down a flooded street?
Ron, reading about the 'chilling' adventures of a typical Volksrodder and his lovely and strong wife bringing home a new appliance makes for a fun morning.
