for a bench all you need to do is use the top of the back seat, the bottom of the fronts and fab some brackets (because the seat mount for the top part is too narrow), it would just have to bow out instead of in to meet the seat bottom. Then you can still use the ebrake

Billetproof Nor-Cal will be at the Antioch Fairgrounds on September 25th, 2004
Kirk should have the new WWWs on the Corporate Jet by then.
www.billetproof.com

"A Volksrod in a day" would make a great magazine article.

Perhaps Butcher Will,or someone else who has set a body back
on a stock pan could advise if it would be practical to do that in one day,
along with everything else.

Cutting the pan,behind the seats,
to shorten the wheelbase could easily be done in a day.
That would help the proportions,if the beam was moved forward,or flipped.
And look pretty spectacular to the viewing public
that isn't real familiar with VWs.

"Dude, they cut the car in HALF ! "
"Then welded it back together ! "

I'm gonna guess, you wont get hot vw's covering this, i can almost guarantee. the magazine (not dave) seems to be taking the attitude that they will not promote primer and ratrods, because it is encouraging building of unsafe vehicles. now if you paint it glossy by the end of the day, you might get their attention. my guess is volksworld will get a solo on this.

I keep forgetting that Primer
makes any car instantly unsafe.

Well, VW Trends might be into it. The May 2004 edition dedicated the cover and nearly the entire contents to rat-VW's. I really dig the bench top, bucket bottom seat set up.

If people on this board have the confidence to build a ratty chop top in a day, it would be much easier to build a roadster pick up and slide the body back 8-14". The back panel is just two doors welded together and someone would have to bring a bed. You would have to fab bed mounts and bam. Much easier than the chop top by far. shifter can be curvy like in hoppy's ghia, the last part is relocating the pedals, unless someone has a hydralic pedal cluster siting around.

As far as Hot vw's and trends. We go out there and do this, we will be in one of the Hamb lovers mags I bet. :D That would just piss in there cherios (the ones that cant stand vw's) not the cool ones that actually offer info and wisdom.

I just didn't want to see this thread die and get burried. I know that September is a long way off but I just don't want to be unprepaired. The last time that I was unprepaired, 9 months later my daughter was born.

So have we heard any more from Kirk?
Do we have a donor car?

I've almost got my buddy talked into it, but I'll have to get him signed up on here first. I was like "we need to get a car donated, but..." and before I was finished he was like how bout my '60! Take it! please! But then he stated to have second thoughts, so I'll be working on him for the next couple of days, and if he doesn't make up his mind soon, we move on.

He's got a '70 with the roof cut off already, but we need a stocker. But that means he already has lots of pieces of cars. :P Oh and he doesn't have a girlfriend or wife, cars are his one and only love.

OT-Walt when do I get to come by and get a ride in the pickup?

A full chop top would be more difficult than a roofless pickup rod but it would also be MUCH more impressive to see done in a day. We want this even to SHOW OFF for Volksrods.com. We are not just showing off member talent but also we are showing these traditional rodders the versatility of our little car. I want everyone at this event to be standing around and saying "Man, I didn't know you could do that to a VW!"

That being said, I have a compromise. (this is straight from my secret-plans in my head file). I can assure you all that a full chop can be done in a matter of hours by two people while the other competitors work over the rest of the car.

Step 1 - Cut a GIANT rectangle into the middle of the roof. (about the size of a ragtop section).

Step 2 - Make a cut from each window opening up the roof into the big hole you just made. This divides the remaining metal up so that each post is totally independent of the other posts.

Step 3 - Chop each seperate post the proper amount (about a 5" chop maybe?) Go ahead and use the formula for the chop amounts posted on the forum a few days ago.

Step 4 - Weld each post back on. By now the car will begin to look like a chop top. It will have a big hole in the middle of the roof still and it will have gaps in the remaining roof material between each post/roof section.

Step 5 - Fill the gaps with strips from a donor roof.

Step 6 - Lay down a big rectangle of metal (possibly a donor roof from a DIFFERENT car make/model) to cover the big hole in the middle. Tack weld this on top of the car and....

DONE.

Using a roof off of a different car will give you a flatter roofline and an even LOWER overall car/chop shape without a rediculously huge chop top. I would say steal the roof off of a modern cheap ass car like a honda (from the junkyard obviously).

If you guys don't do it... I will. I just don't get to do it in front of a crowd of disbelievers.

Why from the junkyard? Why not from the street? I've got a REALLY long extension cord. ;) I think the owner of a Honda would be understanding of the cause. "What the fuck happened to my ROOF!?!?!" "It's going to a good cause, don't worry buddy". Wait a minute! My ex-girlfriend drives a Honda! Hmmmm......

Using a different skin for the roof might look OK,or it might look terrible
if the lines didn't flow right.

I think a round car,with round fenders,needs a round roof.

Customizing isn't just about changing stuff,it's about making it look better.

the roof would have to come from a bug also, just for the originality factor. I'd like to us us create something phenominal from a BUG, not a honda! Rob has an extra roof section that he might donate...rob? So why don't all of us start looking hard for a donor vehicle since it looks like none of us have one and no friends do either.

oh ya...nothing further from Kirk yet, I'll shoot him some mail tonight and see where we stand!

You name it buddy. You should have been at the vets. bldg. swap meet last weekend. I gave quite a few rides. I gave a ride to Jim from Donsco and I also tortured the guy that I bought the roadster from. I gave him a ride and he kept saying you stole this car from me..you stole this car from me..
Do work on Saturdays? I'll swing by your store sometime.

Well guys remember that I have offered my 65 up for the cause. the biggest drawback to that car is the fact that I have no fenders, hood or deck lid for it. I think that we should start with a car that looks like a stock bug. The body is not fastened to the pan and the engine and trans is out. It has been converted to an IRS so it will look real cool lowered. I could put the race motor that I took out of the roadster in the car. The motor sounds outragous because it's got the wildest cam you've ever heard. The draw back to that motor is the fact that it's all chromed out so I'd have to paint everything black or replace the shiny stuff.
If I put that car together we could probably get by with it.

I've got a hood and a set of early fenders for the front I'll donate to the cause. The fenders are coming off right away anyway right? I've actually got two hoods, on is an early hood, but it's pretty rough, the second is a later hood, but it has a crappily (I love making up words :P )shaved handle. I can get a decklid and rear fenders too, so we can slap the thing together, so we can pull it apart. We can actually put like 3-4 bolts holding each fender on and really wow 'em when we have the car stripped in like 15 minutes. You could leave most of the bolts holding the body on out and have the body off in like another 15 min. We would just have to look like we were really working though. I like the idea of using your motor, cause you say it has a good sound, and that would go good with the crowd. Also, I have all the tinwork in black, so you could keep all your shiny stuff. I might be able to get a tranny too, but I'm not certain about that. I could probably get my work to donate :peek: some supplies if I ask nicely :P

Maybe a few of us can meet up at Walt's shop and get this pig put together and running. That way at the show we can drive (or push) it in as an ugly stocker and cruise it out as a bitchin volksrod!

Oh, and I was thinking, even if we don't get to do this at the show, we should spend a weekend at Walt's shop and bust the rod out anyways!

And we should film it and still do it within the parameters of the contest rules. Just so we can say "Hey, look at what we cranked out in the sam amount of time."
