Looks like it's do-able. I had this idea: cut the car in half right in the middle of the rear windows, cut the a pillars 3-4" cut the b pillars out, shorten the whole car by about an 1.5". I think Tobias' rod was done like that, but I'm not sure. I did all the measurements on my oval, and for a 3" chop, you'd have to shorten the car by 1.5". It would keep the curve of the roof the same, but I don't know if it's possible in 6 hours. It'd give us a head start on the extended wheelbase (by an 1.5"), it would be fairly subtle. The hardest part would be putting the windows back together. It's hard to explain, but I'll show you when I can use my hands and some tape.

Walt, do I think you are crazy, HELL YES! :P but, your plan is definately do-able if we have all of our cut lines planned out in advance I think you Brian and I should get together next weekend sometime(10th or 11th) and see what parts we have/need/etc. I like your plan for the chop Walt, but I just need some clarification on how we are going to be filling in the roof section, I'll have you SHOW me later on. It sounds definately do-able in a day!

Brian, can you weld??? I know Rob can weld, and I can as well, but its been a couple of years so I may need a warm up that morning! ...or I'll just whore myself out to other projects that need to get done and leave the weldin to you old farts.

As for the sunroof section, lets just cut the fuker out of there and make it into a permanent ragtop, why not? Then Walt, you'll have a sunroof section to sell off(or give away).

Look in tobias' members into and update. Check the chop he did, only one roof section, and the b pillars are slanted in the process which might add to the cool factor. Tell me what ya think fellas, that would make it very simple. Thats actually what I'm doing first thing when I buy my new one next month, Hopefully before bugorama. Its alot easier than the 6" chop I wanted originally like stinkbugs.

One thing to be careful of.
It's real easy to over estimate how much you can get done
in a short period of time.

Awesome news! If we want to do a roadster pickup, we have a bed. One of our customers here at my work said we can have one of his model a pickup beds! It measures (roughly)56"x41"x18". I checked it on a pan and it would fit width-wise, and if we moved it up to the back of the cab, it would fit lengthwise. It has no floor to it, but it's complete, including the tailgate. We could make a tonneau cover for it (not neccesarily at Billetproof) and completely cover the engine.

Dayz- I can kinda weld. My welds may not be very pretty, but they will kind of hold. It really depends on the welder, as I'm not bad with a MIG with gas, but I'm pretty good with oxy-acetelene. (sp?)

Unkl Ian- I couldn't agree with you more, six hours isn't that long. I think most of the ideas we are having right now are just that-ideas. It can't hurt to be throwing these out, because on the day of the show you know we are probably gonna hafta change the whole plan anyway B).

Steve- What the fuck is up with your avatar?!?

walt with how you have planned it a body drop is very doable. hook it like butcher will did. you are gonna have to cut the pan anyway to remount the body... just weld it to the top of the heater channels.

you guys kick ass

Crack, Wee haven't met yet so I still don't know exactly what we will do but....If we do chop it trhe way that I'm figuring , I am not figuring to cut the pan and channel it for the billetproof show. We would just narrow the body and remount it (probably just tack weld) to the pan, because the pan is that much narrower anyhow.
To be honest, I do have one concerne that I hope someone can help with. This is going to be kinda hard to describe but I'll try.

The way that I've figured to cut the pillars is to move the roof straight down. In doing this there will be 2 problems.

1) The roof will end up 2 3/4" too short.
Solution) either cut accross the roof and add a 2 3/4" strip. Or slant the "A" piller to meet.

2) By lowering the roof straight down the back window will remain stock, and the top of the roof at the vent area will come down and possably hit the motor.
Unfortunatly I don't have a good solution for that problem except to cut the rear window and raise that section back up like I did in the photoshop pic, which may make the project too much for one day.

I totally plan to continue working on the project after the show which will include the body drop and so on but we do have to keep the project do-able for the show.

I'm really looking forward to here more sugestions, so keep them coming.

PS. I for got to mention that I really like Papa Smurf's sugestion about doing it like Tobias did. The only problem that I have with that is the fact that I don't know what is involved in doing the B pillar slant (that I'm assuming is to make up for the amount of missalignment that occures when chopping a roof). As long as we have a plan and know exactly what we're going to do we can accomplish a lot in a short period of time. That much I know from experiance.

walt i dont think you will have a problem hiting the motor. any more than that ....maybe but i think it would still clear.... especially if you forgo the deck lid. the only interferance issues i think you would have would be the hinges, so if you rip them out ... no problem

very true about the mounting of the body.... kindof remembered that when i was under my car today looking around.

Just as a reminder to everyone. This coming weekend, the 10th we will be getting together at my shop in Santa Rosa. Everyone is invited. So if you are like me and RATRODVW and have no life at all, show up and put in your 2 cents worth. Between old age and the use of recreational drugs, we will need all of the brain cells that we can muster.

You know, that was my first thought but when I did some Photoshop work of it ,I just didn't like it.

And Dayz, I'm really glad you're coming.

I just thought if some of the other Nor Cal guy would like to be there, that would be cool.

What time are we all meeting on Saturday? I've gotta work in Oakland, but I can get out of it if I have to. I would be up in Santa rosa about 3:30-4:00. Dayz said he has to leave to go to a bachelor party and I wanted to meet him, so I'll switch days with somebody.

Sunday works better for me, too. That way I don't have to take time off work. Hey we can all say we're going to attend the church of chop on Sunday! Anyway Sunday works for me, but it's really kinda up to Walt, as we're meeting at his shop.

Walt is your shop down by Van's VW repair? or is up Yolanda more towards Santa Rosa Ave? Also do I need to bring my parts I'm donating to the cause on Sunday? I figure I'll bring it so it's at least with the car, but I don't want it in the way at your shop, so let me know.
