Default Seat rails for new pan
Re:: Ghia

Thought I share some infor for all those that are "searching" (that is a hint for some of you...)

I know that for a bug you can buy new pans with or without the seat rails attached. Not true for a Ghia. So, here is how we removed the old seat rails in order to keep them nice enough to reinstall on the new pans.

First clean everything off so you can see where the spot weld are.

Remember to measure. I measure where the rails intersected the tunnel, as well as distance from frame head and the rear support brace. Even drew a pic with all the distances, lol! Once you know where all the spot welds are (not all, just the ones you can see - you will miss a couple), get started. I used a small drill bit first (easier to drill a small hole...) then followed that with a bit that was just bigger than the weld.

This is how it looks when drilled out. After a couple of hours, this is what you should end up with.

These are the tools that you need.....I even think you can raise a transmission four inches with these same tools....

Isn't beer "part of the uniform" and not an additional item?

Well, I don't drink so I guess I'm out of the loop.

I'm not much of an imbiber either. Every now and then a beer sounds good, but not often, and not much. Coffee in the morning, gatorade and kool-aid the rest of the day! Makes for a steadier hand.

Nice job! I did the same thing when replacing the rear pan halves on my bug....plug welded everything back together and they work great!

Thanks Double D! That is what SHOULD be happening this weekend. I figure plug welds would be quite similiar in strength. Grind it smooth and cover with carpet. BTW, like your builds. I have a baja too....wish I could drive it more often, lol! It's not road friendly and I don't have the time these days to take it out playing.
