The bus transaxle in a bug reminds me of a funny story. Back in the mid-70s a neighbor building a '64 Baja Bug located a cheap 60's bus transaxle with a blown center section. He bought it figuring to raise the whole Baja up and would use his center section which worked fine. You can probably guess where this went. I didn't find out about that part of his project until he stopped by to ask my advice about his shift linkage. It seemed that once things were back up and running he had four speeds in reverse. And of course, only shifting into reverse would let him move the bug forward.

I don't think he was the only one who had that issue. Think I have heard similar tales two or three times before.

Oh. Here's the progress on this one.

Here when I swapped the dropspindles to Thing spindles... :)

And this is how it ended up. Literally.

WOW! You've got the stance (IMHO) perfect, and she looks like she's ready to tackle any hill, or creek. Retaining the stock bumpers and not overly crazy wheel sizes makes for a tough factory look. Roof rack is an excellent touch.
What kind of cruise speeds does she manage with the reduction boxes?

Now that looks great, I love it, always wanted a full fendered Bug like that for the occasional trip into the forest

Or, some of our less-than-wonderfully-maintained roads here in Northern California.

Started to rebuild the rearaxle and reductionboxes as the home made Alpine gearing was way too noicy.

So I will replace the complete housings etc. with an original smallnut reductionbox set instead.

Here you see very well how the 60's modification was made. Due to the smaller upper gear the lower axlestump and bearinghousing had to be moved up too...

This area needs to be modified the same as the old kit I have just to clear from the beetle brakecylinder.

Some updates from the past months..
I cut the snout for the axletubes to clear from the bug springplates and adapters.

Then I removed the original shockmounts from the new RGB's

Also cleared the outer housing bottom screw so the bug backinplates will clear the screw.

Then got some new and improved adapters watercut.

And welded in new shockmounts in original Type-1 location.
