Re:: VR related job skills.

T.W.A.T.S. (The Wrench And Tool Squad)
There is a talented group of people on this site. What would/could happen if we listed the skills all in one place.

I see there are some members here that are directly employed with VW's in some manner. Be it restoration, parts sales, custom fabrication of VW parts etc.
I also see alot of members from different occupations with skills that they use at work, skills that crossover to be used in some phase of building their VR projects.
Examples are collision shop guys, welders, machinists, fabricators, painters, designers, etc.
Basically anything you do for work that you also do on your VR would qualify you as a member of T.W.A.T.S.

I am an aircraft engineer, I fix turbine engines, I don't have a VW application for a turbine yet, but I also design/fabricate alot of aircraft support equipment which means welding, fabricating, stuff I also do on the VR.
Therefore I am in TWATS

So lets hear it, are you in TWATS and what do (or did) you do to get there.

I'm currently unemployed, all my experience is from past employments and marriages, raised in an auto body shop, aircraft engine mechanic, aircraft maintenance, auto-parts sales, fixed my own vehicles before current hubby took over but I still can do most, getting back into it lately, but last job was 13yrs ago,
so I'm out~ I'm not a TWAT!

edit, I AM a TWATS member

Is there like a membership fee and meetings of the T.W.A.T.S ?

I'd like to sign up for this one...hope I make it in!

I work at a hot rod/restoration shop, and I handle pretty much all the fabrication and metal work (sheet metal included). I'm not certified, but I'm a pretty decent welder. I also do body work (bondo and such), prime/paint (HVLP), and push a mean broom. While all this doesn't necessarily relate directly to VWs, I've used what I've learned on mine, so it counts!

I'm a Mechanical Designer with a preference for SolidWorks, I also use AutoCad for 2d work. I'm currently designing oilfield service equipment. I have also worked as a designer for a company that built the cockpit instrument for flight simulators and a steel fabrication company that did mainly antenna mounts and equipment platforms for the telecom industry. Thankfully through these jobs I have also learned how to weld and handle most fabrication needs.

Ooh...I'm not a vw restorer, mechanic, or even an owner today (hoping to change that soon!), and I'm currently disabled with a bad leg...BUT I have been:

*An electrician (residential and industrial plant-PLC's, VFD's, some instrumentation, Autocad for blueprints, computer monitoring systems for plant control and documentation SCADA)

*Worked in an aluminum smelter...welding, fabricating, working with molten metal. I'm in the process of making a small foundry to remelt and sandcast for a hobby.

*Worked as a cabinet maker/installer/custom trim and door making...years and years ago!

*Grew up working on logging and farming equipment, so I am very well versed in the art of "scabbing it together"

I don't know if this qualifies me as a "TWAT", but I am willing to help anyone with whatever I know

let's see

I have an degree in art, was a dial maker, screen printer,
but now I have a degree in divinity am an ordained member of the clergy.

Anybody need their volksrod blessed?
Or maybe sprinkled?

exorcist (Actually I would have to get one of my Catholic friends to do that-if they do that any more)

I guess I can't really be a twat squad member

I now have a commercial sewing machine and am doing my own interior and will be making a new top. I also airbrush and have painted a car (for money!)

I've worked in many a pizza place over the years and managed one of them. I've ate a lot of pizza while working on my VWs so that counts, right?

I welded for a living for 15 years and I've carried that into VWs (and other junk). Now, I do 3D design stuff in ProE which I used to design a couple of beam extensions, a rotisserie, the airline system in my garage and a few other "government projects" I haven't built yet.

I want in, I have been a mechanic , prototye fabricator, mechanic again, landscaper, bricklayer, plumber, electrician, roofer, mechanic again, technical consultant, Technical Service Engineer , and now I manage the people that answer calls from Audi Dealers when they are having trouble fixing cars. THAT is the only thing I miss about work...the "G-Jobs", and having access to a full fabrication and machine shop.

Now I have to build with the junk I have at home, no more tig, no more plasma, no more 48" lathe, or mills, no shapers or grinder, no keyway maker...dang, it's just depressing. On an up note, I do have a mean little 110V arc welder and a grinder, so my welding "appears" as good as it ever did!

Sorry for the thread hijack...back to the TWAT's...

Let me think:

1- Grew up on a farm with my Cherokee grandfather that was a blacksmith,( I had to handcrank the forge a lot).
2- Journeyman -- Boilermaker- Certified Hi-pressure steam tube welder, Fabrication, High rigger.
3- Journeyman Millwright-- Mechine work, Repair machinery.
4-- Worked as a M.E. designing Automation ( robots) for a auto company.
5-- Com. Pilot, ( Retired) flew for the U.S. Gov as a private contractor.
6 -- Built 6 homemade aircraft, (no kits).
7-- Restored 7 Antique aircraft. (last one went to a museum in Berlin, Germany.
8-- Building my 2 nd aircraft of my own design.

I don't think I'm qualified enough...

Dirt poor country boy who couldn't pay attention let alone pay someone to fix things, bailed and bucked hay and made numerous "field repairs" to the 40's and 50's equipment we could afford, 7 years in the Navy servicing and maintaining A.L.R.E. (Aircraft Launch and Recovery Equipment), Ford master tech. for 10 years, and I currently work for the City of Bristow as the only mechanic, welder, fabricator, maintenance guy....

Oh, and I dabble in building stuff on the side. Does any of that count?

I may not be able to read books without pictures, but I can probably build a fully functional particle accelerator in the back yard with stuff I pull out of the woods and out of scrap piles.
