The goal is to have it driveable for the Invasion. It won't be done, but hopefully it will get there under its own power.

Even if it is not, I will probably tow it out for one of the days just so people can see what I am doing with it.

Got out and did a little bit of and on the Lead Sled today. Not much to show, but I know how you all are about pictures....so here you go.

First I added the last filler piece on the fender skirt mod for the RH fender...

Then I started forming the new body line for the RH fender...

not a lot of progress, but it always feels good to make a few small steps. Still hard to get motivated whenit is only 40 degrees out. Should be warming up here soon.....

There really isn't anything I could say that hasn't already been uttered. Nevertheless you are creating a hell of a car something to really be proud of.

I just read through the entire post and while metal craft is FAR in my future I have begun to pay more attention to it in the past year or so, and I kept returning to the same questions.

As a complete newbie I'm wondering how you formed the 'blister' on the rear deck (above the license light). And a related question the 'bumps' on the rear wells, it looks as though you created one and welded it on,before creating the second so I'm wondering how you will match the other side symmetrically?

Again, fantastic work, thanks for driving our hobby forward!

Thanks.

The blister on the back is just a piece of sheetmetal that I hammered over a couple of different anvils to get the shape in it. I started with a cardboard template to get the shape of the blank right. It took a bunch of fiddling around to get it because of the curve of the decklid and the compound curve of the blister. Much easier to keep trying with the cardboard and some scissors than with sheetmetal. After getting it close adn matching it to the light housing, I tacked it in place andthe then cut the decklid metal from the inside and then welded it all up.

The new bodylines/bumps in the lower front of the rear fenders are formed similarily. Just banging them out of some sheetmetal. I put relief cuts due to the amount of compound curvature. These need to be welded up. A true metal craftsman could make them without the relief cuts, I am sure. You are right....I made one and am now trying to make the other to match. The good thing is that you will never see both of them at the same time so I am not too worried about getting them dead-nuts symmetric. They will be close. I made some more cardboard templates and am doing a bunch of measuring.

Is it just me or would it look cool with a slightly shortened wheelbase? Chop about 4" from the door, maybe 3" from behind the B pillar, snug it all up with a 3" chop top...
Don't know, just playing with the possibles!

Ummmmm.....I think it is just you. It already has a 6" chop and I have done a bunch of work to make it longer....not shorter. I actually added about 6" to the front edge of the rear fenders to make them longer and hang out the rear of the car a bit more. I moved the windshield frame forward about 4" to change the proportions some more.

And there won't be a b-pillar. Hardtop roof style, baby!

Definitely won't be shortening the wheelbase.

Since the Type 3 Invasion is in MI this year, I might have to check it out. You bringing the T3VR? I'd love to see it up close.

Yup. It will be there one way or another. Won't be done, but it will be there.

Come down anyway. Won't see that many Type 3s in one place again in the States until 2010 and then it is likely to be in Colorado. You only need a Type 3 to park in the "show" area. There will be plenty of parking for non-Type 3s as well.

So.....

The weather cooperated today and I got a chance to spend a few hours with the Sled.

I got the new bodyline piece grafted into the RH fender.

Here are both fenders back to back. The symmetry is pretty good. Certainly close enough for me.

and a wide view of the pair.

after getting that done, I started on the "tail fin" mods by removing the unnecessary sheetmetal from the inside of the fender.

I also manage to cut the donor filler piece from the donor fender. Forgot to take a pic. I hope to get some more time tomorrow to get it grafted in.

Got some more and done on the Sled tonight!

Got the new inside of the "tailfin" cut to fit and tacked in place.

Of course I had to put it on the car and take a coupe of shots. Here is a close up of the added piece.

I still need to do some trimming and add the flange to connect up to the bodyside.

And one last picture of the rear of the car...

Are you planning on modifying the tail lights at all? I'm so torn over that decision on my car because there are so many potential light choices, but the stock early tail lights look so damn good as they are. your progress looks great as usual!

Nope. No tail light mods. They will be one of the few readily recognizable Type 3 parts left on the car.

I agree, the stock early, all-red tailight assemblies are a thing of beauty....and they help with the fin look I am going for.

It should look great. I applaud the effort to get the look you are after and still have a few visual clues to the car's origins. I think "Oh wow, that's a cool type 3" is preferable to "I didn't expect there to be a VW under there."

great work,
Lee

Really nice work there Mr. J. Ė Any thoughts on the rear bumper? Would be cool to see something similar to an old Merc and the way it wraps around the fenders.
