VW Race
Hey everyone!
Been absent for a bit - but I come bearing interesting news!
There's a guy putting together a VW race across America (not really - but close)
He's doing two small races, one from Florida to Illinois and one from New Mexico to Illinois.
I thought what a great way to get some of us together that have never met in person, to get together at a cool event and link up!
Plus, a great way to get some Volksrods out there too.
here is the guy's page link:

Facebook Link:

Thoughts?

Re: VW Race
If I can't do the race I'll be at the finish, and if for some reaso I can't make it to the start I can follow along when everyone comes thru Cincinnati, if the route doesn't change

Re: VW Race
I am hoping it will be - my fiancee and I are looking at our timetable to actually get the DoubleCab roadworthy enough to do it - so I will actually be back in the garage shortly, with more pics of our progress!

Re: VW Race
You do realize Keith, that in either case you wind up in Illinois ? Then everyone will have to race back to civilization from there.

Yes, this will be a very long trip all together. Preliminary route shows me traveling around 3,700 miles round trip. Also going to take two weeks off from work in order to do it all.
DC currently sits with no motor, original trans with reduction boxes, no brakes, and some pretty bad rust on the frame.
Looking at fixing the frame, and getting all the drivetrain sorted before the trip - not worried about anything else really - would like to try and get safari windows put in to keep cool during the adventure. Problem is (like always) I have some other things in the way in the garage at the moment - so working on getting those cleared out by November to give us some room to work.

Re: VW Race
I bought a new set of rear brake calipers for the disc brake setup I made a few years ago, I need to rebuild the front brakes to so I can stop
Chances are I'll be driving the entire way by myself, well I'll have my dog with me, I just hope he lets me get the work done, it's hard for me to get anything done with him around, I think I have only been in my garage about 10 times this year

He would be to busy shredding the shop towels, one day I was trying to work on something and he wouldn't stop barking at me (what he does when I'm not giving him my full attention) so I grabbed a 1 inch wrench, he took it and ran off, I still haven't found it, he may have chewed it up, he breaks rock with his jaws if he finds one big enough
I hope he grows out of it soon, he hay to much energy

Re: VW Race
All this braille got me to thinking about the drive thru ATM's that have braille on the keys, I guess the blind drive now
Which brings up another thought, I can't ever fly a plane because I'm bolor blind, why can't they use braille so I can tell what color everything is

Have you tried those cool Glasses that correct color blindness? I see videos of people coming to tears all the time, when they first put them on and the way they react to color items that they have never seen before... Might look into it and see if your type of color blindness can use them... I think I saw that not all types of color blindness will be correctable with them.
Shoot... If it works for you, you might be able to pilot one day...

Re: VW Race
I can get the first two color blind tests but thats it, I can see colors, its the shades of purple, pink that I have trouble with, for years my wife has been telling me its pink not purple, I thought she was messing with me, now I just ask one of my grand daughters, seems they agree with my wife
As for the glasses I may look into it, I havent tried the color blind test since I had my cataracts removed
Oh yeah one of my VW friens has a bi-plane he wants to sell only because its a single seat, it needs a complete rebuild, but I would love to be able to fly

Re: VW Race
Back in the late ‘70’s a friend got me a ‘intro to gliders’ lesson. I soloed and flew about ten hours in two types of gliders. A friend of the flight school owner offered me lessons in powered small aircraft for tee shirt art and painting signs for his new business selling small planes. I ended up living at a small airport in my home built camper for over two years. I got my private pilots license with a ‘high performance’ rating via trading art mechanical work and picking up and dropping off small planes for the business (free flying time!) I still have my license but haven’t flown since the late 80’s but have around 500 hours. It was a fun time and led to meeting Sherrie.
