Re: Back into VW's
I decided I was going to drive the bug to my chiropractor visit this morning. Didn't go quite as well as expected.
I had it warming up in the driveway and it shut off and would not restart. So I took the truck instead. When I got home I checked it out. The points were completely closed up. Odd... it ran fine last time I cut it off. No wear on the block and the screw was tight. Reset the gap, and it fired right up. I let it run about 5 minutes and heard excessive valve noise on 3-4 side. Decided to readjust them since I was in a maintenance mood anyway. Number 4 intake valve was loose. I backed the swivel foot adjuster off to check the swivel on it. The ball fell out! Not sure how that came to be. So I just threw a stock rocker shaft on it to be able to drive it to the garage. I am going to order new rocker/shaft assemblies and I think I am going to upgrade my valve springs while I am at it.
I think it knew something was getting ready to go to hell and it adjusted it own points so that it died in the driveway and wouldn't leave me stranded on side of the road with a bunch of busted up parts! It was doing me a favor.

Re: Back into VW's
I got it all squared away yesterday. New high rev valve springs will alloy retainers, new swivel feet, and I put the new 1.25 rockers on it that I had saved for when I got the motor broke in. Also put new door mirrors on it since the old ones were starting to flake the chrome. I went with stainless this time. I am back in commission now and hoping for good weather this weekend for a local car show I am planning on being in.

Re: Back into VW's
It’s interesting how our projects seem to look out for us at times. In the last year my Single Cab and sidecar rig have both ‘stranded ‘ me at home until I was able to chase down and repair the problem. Sounds like your ride was just taking care of you.

Re: Back into VW's
No doubt, I will take breaking down in the driveway any time. I have AAA, but can only imagine the damage that would be done trying to get it on a rollback.
I had a good time at the show this past weekend. Took home a "Top 25" trophy in an all-makes show again.
Best in show went to Gary's 1967 chop-top split window.
Nice to see 2 of the 3 VW's there do well in a sea of American muscle and street rods.

Re: Back into VW's
This past weekend I finally got around to spring maintenance and upgrades.
Nothing wrong with working on blocks, right?!
After pulling off the shroud, I found this little slice of heaven.
These sum bitches were evicted!! Fire "may" have been involved afterward... but that is merely a rumor.
I had noticed last year when the motor was out that the urethane mounts were junk.
And indeed that was the case!
So I got a set of heavy duty rubber ones. Sorry I didn't get a pic of the front mount, but it was tight enough under the car that I didn't feel like contorting into a pretzel to get a pic. But here are the ones you can see.
While the engine was out, I went ahead and checked the head torque, reset the valves, changed the oil, synced the carbs, and upgraded the entire ignition system. Now I am running a MagnaSpark II.
I haven't test driven it yet, but it does seem to respond better.
I still have some odds and ends to do to other parts of the car, but that will have to wait a couple weeks.
Oh, and here is a video of her running. Sorry about the shitty camera.... I have GOT to get a new one. It takes good pics, but the video sux ballz!

Sounds great! The ‘critters remind me of a friend having trouble getting his Honda sedan running right and we found the air cleaner full of acorn shells.

I saw that. He started at 25k. It is an extremely nice car that I would love to have. I will most likely ebay mine in the spring and see what happens. Maybe it will still be for sale then when I am ready for another vehicle upgrade.
Or maybe I will hunt down the OG Rat Patrol.

Re: Back into VW's
I like that bug, too. Not a big fan of four super wide fenders.
Are you staying with VW’s if you sell?

Re: Back into VW's
My plans are not set in stone yet. I will either get another higher end type 1, or I may get a low budget one to daily and "play" with.
But as of right now, I am watching the markets on a few cars for my next upgrade. I am thinking gen1-2 Viper (with low mileage), Caddy XLR-V (low mileage again), '59 Chevy Impala or ElCamino, or a unique pro street ride. But I am mostly leaning towards a Viper. I have wanted one since they came out and I am in a position to make it happen now.

Re: Back into VW's
Our business is taking off. And someone else’s custom car may be in my future. But, for now I have too many parts and just want to build my own shit. Having the time to do so is the issue.
And as far as watching the market. I have a solid shell/roller 56 oval. They ain’t worth shit! I owned it since the mid 90’s and would make money if I sold it. But not split bus money. It will probably get chopped. A 3” chopped oval is easy and looks like it’s chopped way more.

Re: Back into VW's
Went to the show in Fishersville VA this past weekend. 30 or so cars. Met some good people. Weather was decent, overcast with some breeze most of the day. Just a couple pics for now. I may post a bunch more later in another dedicated thread if anyone is interested.
My ride all cleaned up and out for the first time this year.
Cool family that drove up from NC
Fun looking full length Manx that the guy and his son just built in 2 months!
Nethkins drove out their tank/chopper bug.
