Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
Here goes another project I probably will never finish. I've decided to try my hand at narrowing a beam. After doing some reserch online, talking to friends and being bored off my ass because of the friggin snow storm outside, I finally made the first cut.
Since my old grinder shit the bed some time ago and the new one is at my fathers house I decided to Kick It Old School and use my hacksaw. From the first cut to the last cut on this side, it only took me 15 minutes. Not too shabby for someone my age.
I am narrowing it approximatly 4" total. I was going to go with 3" but the tape I used is 1" wide and it was easier to wrap two pieces around the beam side by side to make sure it was even verses overlapping and hope it's right.
Once I cut the other side, I am going to sleeve the tubes on the inside so they allign correctly and then weld the shit out of them. Actually I'll practice on the sections I cut out first to make sure I have good penetration before I attempt to weld the beam. The last thing I want to do is trust my life as well as anyone elses to some potentally crappy welds.
Here's the pics.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
I went to The Big Orange Box today and got some 1 1/2" EMT to make some sleeves to help keep everything lined up. I stayed with the old school method and used the hacksaw once again to cut the tubing.
Here's the latest pics.
Now I just need to radius the edges and weld it up.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
Got the beam welded up. I had to use my Dremal to radius the ends of the tubes since I forgot to get my grinder from my father. It worked out pretty well.
I had to run out to the truck to get a ratchet strap to sinch everything together. Damn it's froggin cold out (19*). I took a piece of angle iron and attached "C" clamps to make sure everything was aligned. Then sinched it down with the strap to make sure it was together tight. Before welding it I measured the distance from tube end to tube end front and back to make sure it was square. Believe it or not, it was!!
Then I welded it. Here is the end product.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
240 feet of 3/4" square tubing and 4 sheets of 20 gauge cold rolled steel....
What the fuck could I possibly be up to now?

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
Did a little cutting and welding today. I have to wait until I receive some measurements to determin the final width.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
Tomorrow I'm stopping at Nate's on the way back from Buffalo (visiting family) to pick up the trailer I gave him last year. This will be the base for the project.
Sorry, that's the only hint you're going to get.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
Worked on a couple side projects between last weekend and today. A friend brought a machine from work over last week to see if I could fix it. It's used for tumbling soil samples prior to being tested. It seems tha last guy to "fix" it welded steel diamond plate to the stainless steel and warped the hell out of the sides as well as the shaft.
I beat the piss out of the side to straighten it, straightened the shaft and made a disc out of 1/4" plate to fix the warped pulley. Took a few hours over a couple days but it works so far.
I told me buddy to bring it to work and load test it to make sure it works. Hopefullt it hold up cuz it could end up with me getting a few bucks.
This is after I fixed it. Sorry, I didn't think to take a vid while it was fucked up.
And while he was here, I welded up the mufffler for his lawn mower. I scored some jalopino peppers for that job.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
I finished welding the frames today. I would have welded the cross members but it's raining out and there's not enough room in the garage.
I also worked on the trailer today. I have to lower the fenders on it so the project will fit. I had to make some brackets and will weld the fenders back on the trailer.
Picked my daughter up from school and got back out into the garage. I had to repair the mounting area on top of one of the fenders and then welded the brackets on.
Here it is, 3 inches lower.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
Pretty nice day out so I got back to work on the project.
I needed to bend some sheet steel so I used my "white trash" brake and had my wife stand on the sheet so it would bend properly.
Then I laid a 2x4 on it and hammered the shit out of it. It worked pretty good.
Once I finished all four ends, I mocked it up with the frame.
I still have a lot of figuring out to do so things go together correctly but I'll just keep doing what I'm doing and design it as I go.

Re: Turbo Punk, Skeletal Remains, And Other Worthless Shit.
A little more work on the trailer project. I welded the skin on the back side then welded some more braces on the front frame. Afterwards I made some cuts and now have the "counter top" started. Now I need to find some cheap 6' stainless steel piano hindges.

No updates, no new pics, no funny digs at other people, I just felt like hogging the top spot for a little while.
