Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
It sure better be, or I'll start making them & sell them for cost & screw the Vendors that don't listen to the public! (You know, you guys, the people that pay their friken bills!)
It would have to go through the shop as a "normal job" & I'd lose any profit, but, at least you guys would have a bolt-on adapter that is correct.
It surprises me that there are so many machinists on here, & no one has made any for anyone yet! With all teh bullshit that you guys have been going through, I would have thought it would have been done a few times by someone on HERE!

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
The boss man knows what is needed. He has the previous vendors adapters on the panty buncher. I doubt he'd sign on the new vendor if the new ones weren't as needed to just plug and play.

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
Joe (c1run1) said he was talking to them about it... so they may... or may not be encorporating that into the design. I'm not sure yet. I don't understand the big debate over these additional spacer rings...
Every other genre of rod builders out there have had to deal with this when adapting these wheels to different drums. It's just common knowledge for the older "domestic" rods that you use these spacer rings when you adapt these wheels. The adapters I got from Skute Design didn't have them built in either...
If they incorporate them into the design... that would be great. If not... we'll be like 99% of the other rodders out there who have to run these spacer rings. That's why you see them made by several places, from about $40 for a set of 4.
Ideally... yes... it would be perfect if they were incorporated into the design. But seriously... a deciding factor... no.

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
And I might add... the people that have done the legwork and have been successful in finding someone to make these adapters... know how hard it is to find someone willing to do it at ALL, let a lone at a decent price. It's the full 9 1/2" diameter needed that is the main turn off to most fabricators due to them not carrying blanks that large.
So if we spend another 40 bones for a full set of those spacer rings... I'm ok with that.
If you're just waiting around for the end product to be magically available... you miss a lot of the frustrations behind finding a fabricator for these. I went through it with the original vendor we previosly had. Joe done good.

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
Well the thing is, when buying the adapters. I will know I need the ring also. If I saw the add for adapters I would think it's bolt on and go.
We have this site to get informed. My buddy in Timbucktwo would never know unless the vendor made this fact known in the add. I am very thankfull this product is offerd.

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
My bad too Boss Man! I remember when you posted about getting the wires on the Buncher and I didn't remember you saying that you had to use the rings as well. So my appologies for implying that they were incorporated. Just to note though, I wasn't carrying on a debate. I totally agree that making the adapters can be quite the task and finding somebody to do it isn't always the easiest either so having to buy a set of rings is only minor after the fact. It is good that the guys planning on purchasing them know that now. I myself am over my wire wheel stage so it's on to something else now. I do hope to see more with them on though. It was one of my favorite things when I joined in on this crazy mess. I just prefer something else now.

Keep in mind... they're not putting an ad out specifically for these adapters, they're offering up the service of making adapters to OUR specs. Don't put the responsibility on the vendor to know every size, spacing, offset, or the occasional freak detail (like these wheels) out there in the wheel world... It's up to the BUYER to do their research when getting something fabricated. Just like I did when I had mine done up.
It looks as if Joe has done the hard part for everyone here and got with them to have that spacer ring issue incorporated into the adapter itself... and that is AWESOME. But that info had to be supplied to them by the "buyer" (Joe in this instance), we couldn't have expected them to just know. Now that they have the design on file... it'll be piece of cake for everyone else from here on out.
I found out about the rings while doing my research (right after they already showed up). I didn't blame the guy on the lathe... come on.

Thanks again Joe and Brian for finding them... and bringing it to my attention that they'd be interested in joining the Coalition.

ya know i have heard that a lot, but why not use cast aluminum, or if weight isnt an issue use cast iron to make these adapters
i bought a set of cast aluminum adapters about 20 years ago, 4 lug VW to 5 lug 4-3/4 inch bolt pattern, i ran them on my Bug for a few years, then i got a set of wheels given to me for my rail buggy with the 4-3/4 bolt pattern, so i used them on my buggy off road, and just let me say, i put them thru more abuse than anyone could ever put them thru if they keep the car on the pavement
when i say i abused them, im talking jumping over hills and getting at least 12 feet off the ground and landing hard, sometimes the front would hit 1st, other times the rear would hit 1st, and a few times i landed it all 4 wheels at the same time, i did it almost every weekend for 2 years straight
they are still on my buggy, it hasnt been moved under power since 97, but they look as good today as they did the day i bought them, now either i was just real lucky, or i got a good set of adapters
yes i would rather have a set machined from a piece cut from a long billet bar, but depending on the matrerial used cast aluminum is just as strong, you can also age harden or season it as well to make it that much stronger
i guess i will hafta cast a set for myself and test them off road like i did to the ones i bought and see how much they can possibly take before breaking, or make just one and put under a press and see how much pressure it takes to break one, hafta do some R&D one day

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
Sorry for bringing up this subject again but does anyone know the all the specs to ask for at motorsportstech for the 1935 to wide 5. I went to there web site and the have a programe set up to help make an adaptor , but I dont have the slitest clue of about 100% of the questions. Or does Joe or Lenny have that all figured out and have the optional slip ring or built in. Has anyone purchased one yet and have specs or price shipped

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
I would say they have the info but the ring might have to be bought afterwards from speedway or something.

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
Thse look really nice. I read inline somewhere to use 13/16 socket size lug nuts must be used for those wheels. the individual was putting 1935's on a 1940 ford. the drum set up is different. adapters simulare to those are needed for that application. They were also pointing out the issues with the center spacers. yours looks good. they were pointing out that the spacers act as a double function, the lug holes in the rims are dimpled then coned which the spacers line up with the coned area, helping centering the rims also. This is important for adds strength and lets them rotate properly. That is why sometimes you'll find some wheels out there with oval shaped lug holes. You dont want you wheels whoobling around like the beaverly hill billys, or Herbie for that matter. That is the reason some people used to say those wheel were very unsafe. And in the 30's, there wasn't many engineer that knew half a shit. Much less the machanics. Just letting yall know something I found out. But oh yea, Hot Rod recommends 13/16 socket size lugs for some aparent reason. Maybe the size of the meat on the lug cant be any smaller. Thanks for the pictures

Re: Adapter update wide five to early ford
c1run1 . my chop is a 64 beetle so I have the short axle which sucks for tall tires. adaptors would probably space it out just enough.y you runnin adaptors only in front or back also??
