Re: The Roach
Rolling the car in and out of the garage has been an adventure as the steering box and the shaft were not connected.
Now I can steer the car! The t1 box and the t3 shaft align perfectly! Woot!!! Small victories.
Things have slowed as we have added house remodeling to the mix. But, for today, some progress.

Re: The Roach
My heads finally arrived from the head porter with a loud bang on my front porch. I was out behind the house when I heard it. By the time I got to the box, the driver was gone and the damage was done 🤒 So, I contacted the head porter with pucs of the damged chambers on one of the heads and he told me I could work them back.
Now, I have opened up manifolds to match intake ports, but to touch the chambers, on something as expensive as these were, well...
I was able, with nervous trepidation, to clean up the combustion chambers on the new to me heads.
I also installed valves in one chamber to see what the volume was. 52cc. Going to an .060 deck will put me right at 10.3 CR...Perfect! That was where I was hoping to get to. Whew!

Re: The Roach
That’s funny. I hadn’t heard of them until your post, and then my latest issue of hotVWs arrived and they mentioned in a positive way in at one of the articles. So how’s it going?

Re: The Roach
Are you going to brace the upper shock mounts and tie them into the rollcage? I did on my last pan car and it stopped the flexing on the framehorns. Less chance of trans breakage and more consistent on suspension tuning.

We are working on a remodel that will include carpet, so assembling clean parts on the old carpet in the livingroom? Yep

Re: The Roach
This is a stock swing axle rear subframe for a type 3, they bolt in. Added are the IRS pivots to convert to IRS. Why? Type 3 rear ends require hanging the engine/transmission from the body. Now, I do not need to do that. Also, I am not going to run torsion bars, so this is a sub that will use 550lbs spring coilover shocks to hold the weight.

Re: The Roach
I’m not familiar with type 3s. Do they run a ‘pan like a Type 1, or more type 2ish, or a monocoque design? Looks like I will be learning something new. And I’m really enjoying your project! 👍

Re: The Roach
I rather liked the construction of a fastback (same undercarriage). That rear subframe makes life pretty easy in some respects... I got my ONLY fatback fro free and it was missing so much stuff I was looking at a costly build so I opted out and let it go. I spent about 6 months teasing myself with it before it left. There was so much to like... But at the time I was restrained by income a lot more than I am now... now I don't have the space or time.
The Roach build is looking good. Be detailed so we can all learn the ins and outs. I have my eye on a coupleof possible projects that have potential if My life slows down some.

Re: The Roach
Last night, after moving the speedster to a friend's garage, I moved the Roach in the garage so that I could have space around it to get after the rear subframe swap. I will also use this time to install the windshield, make some more repairs and see if I can sort out the hood issues.
