That's just funny, cats are some cool & very strange animals

Bubbaz's only funny habit is when she eats, she has to use her paw to drag 1 piece of food at a time out of the bowl to eat, then she does it again until she has eaten about 4 or 5 pieces, then she finishes eating right from the bowl
She doesn't pay any attention to the tree, tissue paper or ribbons, if you drop anything near her she runs away faster than lightning, no pun intended, you'll understand after you read the next sentence

Our last cat, Lightning, (our dogs name was Thunder, he was a Basset Hound) his strange habit was collecting beer bottle caps, he kept most of them in his food dish, back when we would leave to go camping on the weekends my dad would come over to take care of our pets, the first night he came over he emptied all the beer bottle caps out of the food dish & into the trash can, the next day when he came over the cat's food dish was full of beer bottle caps again, he thought maybe he got them out of the trash can, nope they were still in the can, they were the spares he kept all over the house, in the middle of the night we could hear him in the basement playing with them on the concrete floor in the laundry room, he'd reach up & get them off the coffee table as soon as he heard a bottle open, it was funny watching him get them down

I may have mentioned this before, but Thunder died on a nice sunny Saturday afternoon, I remember the date (I can remember all kinds of dates when certain things happen) it was July 23rd 2011, the same day Amy Winehouse died, he was 13 years old, that morning he couldn't walk so I carried him outside to do his thing, then I carried him under the carport laid him on a blanket with his head on my lap petting him, after about 2 hours later a really long thunder started going, Thunder our dog raised his head up & let out a low muffled moan, the thunder lasted about 30 to 40 seconds (or more), when it stopped he went quiet, laid his head down on my lap & fluid started pouring out of his nose, it was a very touching feeling, like the thunder was calling him home & he knew it, I'm tearing up now just thinking about it
The very next Saturday Lightning, who was a year older than Thunder being 14 didn't eat any food all day & was acting funny, about 8:30 pm that night she followed me down to the laundry room & laid on the floor, I got a clean towel out of the dryer, (I was going down to get all the towels out of the dryer) I folded a towel up & laid him on it, sat down to pet him, he died within about 10 minutes

The 2 animals never once played or fought together, they avoided each other for the entire 13 years they were together, I think our cat died of a broken heart
We wrapped the dog up in his favorite blanket along with his Racoon pillow that he slept on since he was a puppy & buried him in the backyard, the following Saturday we dug all the dirt that was on top of him, wrapped the cat up in his blanket that he slept on & covered them both up

I still haven't cast it yet, I hafta find it first or make another one, but I took a piece of styrofoam & used a soldering iron to put their names & dates they died on it & planned to cast them brass headstone, I'll get to it soon, I may do it this spring now that my eyes are dripping tears all over the keyboard
I didn't intend on that being so long

Ron

That was really nice Ron, your story of Thunder and Lightning brought a tear or six to my eyes too.

Why thank ya very much, I tear up on a daily basis from memories of more than just my pets, I've become very emotional since my organ transplants

I so miss them 2, the only thing I don't miss is cleaning up after them, I'm forbidden to clean cat litter boxes, altho I have a few times, but I hafta wear a face mask like the ones they have at doctors offices in case you have a cold, I usually wear one just to protects myself when there, I wear gloves as well
I definitely don't miss out on cleaning up after Thunder Dog, I called those Thunder Boltz, if you were unlucky enough to step in one, or two, I called that being Thunder Struck, of coarse after the AC/DC song, one of my favorites, back in my dancing days when Trina & I would go out to the local bar (was within walking distance) whenever they played that song I'd hafta get up to shuffle my feet, when the song was over I was one of two left up on the dance floor, everybody else was watching me & would scream & yell with encouragement clapping their hands, I was that good, it would take me 10 double shots of tequila & a triple dose of pain meds to be able to dance like that again, or just maybe I should just start off slow & build myself up, physical therapy does wonders, I do certain exercises every day to stay what I call "Functionally Fit"

That was longer than expected, but one memory leads to another

We were organizing stuff around the house and I moved a box and saw a square of fur where Samantha had found a hidden cozy spot. Almost lost it right there in the closet in the office. We love Mia to pieces but we really miss Samantha. 18 years 1 month 4 days. She was a good girl.

About a year before my dad passed away, we were talking about the afterlife. He said this to me:

If there's a heaven, and I get in, I'm gonna ask for the Cat Section. I don't really like people, and I miss all the kitties I used to have.

I used to never care for cats, I'll explain why after a short story telling you why I love them so much now, you may understand before I even finish the story

So on April 23 1996 I got off work, walked up to K-mart & bought 3 cans of the cheapest $0.99 primer cause I had my rail buggy tore apart & was gonna get it read to drive on the street, at the time my wife was working part time seasonal at the IRS, she worked January thru May from 10 pm to 3 am, she left for work, I got my 2 boys in bed & was gonna take a shower & go to bed myself, as I walked down stairs to get me a towel out of the dryer I seen the plastic bag with the 3 cans of primer in it, I thought I better put them away of when I get home tomorrow everything is gonna be painted primer gray except my buggy, I grabbed the bag, headed down stairs, opened the cabinet where I kept all the stuff I didn't want my oldest to get his hands on, I grab the 1st can out & put it on the top shelf, as I'm reaching in the "plastic" bag to get another can the bag rips open & the can I didn't have in my hand falls to the floor, when it hits the seem on the can splits open, paint is spewing up my pant leg, I said "FUCK" & reach down to pick it up, the can rolls on it's side, the paint makes the can start spinning in circles & goes across the floor & lodges itself under the hot water heater, the king with the pilot light that stays lit all the time, a split second later it goes WHAAWHOOOFFFF, like when you throw a match on a bon-fire that has a few gallons of gasoline on it, I turn & run the 10 feet it is to the laundry room door, pick op my fire extinguisher, pull the pin & decide there ain't no way I have a chance, flames were already coming across the ceiling towards me
I run up the steps yelling to my boy's "GET THE FUCK OUT THE HOUSE" we meet at the kitchen & hall way, I throw them a couple coats that were hanging on the chairs, grab the phone to call 911, I tell the woman who asks what's your emergency, I tell her my house is on fire, I got my boy's outside & I'm gonna drop the phone & join them, I toss the phone, then remember my wife's fire drills (she did them as soon as our oldest was old enough to understand) she always said if you can, get the coffee table & drag it out the house because it has all our photo albums in it, I grabbed it & threw it out the front window into the yard (that was fun explaining to everyone) I get outside & hear the fire trucks start wailing, the fire department is a little less than 1/4 mile away, a 1/2 mile drive, it seemed like it took them an hour, it took 3 minutes & 45 seconds from the time they got the dispatch to the time they arrived on the scene, by the time they arrived I could see flames coming thru the roof where the furnace chimney & plumbing vent came out the roof
A police officer arrived 1st, first thing he asked was if everyone was out of the house, I said yes, my boy's are in my car, they were standing in the street in nothing but jackets & underwear, I put them in the car once all the neighbors came out to see the commotion, the next question the police officer asked me changed my life forever, he asked if we had any pets, my heart shrank to the size of a grape, I answered him in a crackling voice that we had a cat, he told me it's to late & he grabbed me to keep me from opening the door, I wasn't gonna go in after him, our cat the boy's named Tink was just under a year old
Like I said I did't really care for the cat, it always ran between my feet when I walked, he'd try to jump on my lap when eating, but I started tearing up

So now you know why I have a special place in my heart for cats, I love them, the only thing I don't like is when Bubbaz walks between my feet rubbing against me, at times she pushes against me so hard it dang near makes me lose my balance & fall down, then I try to take a few steps & hear that screeching sound because I stepped on her foot, but 10 minutes late she's rubbing up against me again, I'm gonna hate the day she leaves us

One day I'll scan a few pics of the aftermath from the fire, it's a brick ranch so it didn't hurt the main structure, but it burnt a little over 1/2 of the floor joists up & 3/4 of the roof trusses, we moved back in on Labor day weekend of the same year, I had them put an electric hot water heater, the furnace has the pilot light that clicks until the burners fire up
I banned any aerosol cans being brought into the house up until about 5 or 6 years ago, but none are aloud in the basement or kitchen

I'm very sorry for such a long story, but that is how I went from not liking cats much at all, to loving them more than you can imagine, 8 months after we moved in we got Lightning, I was surprised to get Thunder on Fathers day of 1998, altho I do have a mental image burned into my brain when they brought Tink out of the house in a smoldering pile on a shovel, I let them take care of his remains, yes I have a few tears running down my cheeks at the moment

Ron

PS. I still had one last thing to do, I had to call my wife at work to tell her to come without telling her what had happened, she asked if the boys were ok, I said yes, she asked what the emergency was, I told he she would find out as soon as she turned on the street ours was off of, she wasn't leaving until I told her, so I did, she hung up the phone & came home, I was at the corner in front of the neighbors house who let me use his phone & let my boys sit in his warm house, he tried to assure me she would understand & not be mad at me, I repeatedly told him, "you DON'T know Trina" she pulled up to the corner & parked he car, our street was full of fire trucks & all the rest of the emergency vehicles, she got out of her car & started walking to what was left of our house, I said her name several times before she let me have it

It started with "YOU & YOUR FUCKING RAIL BUGGY,FUCK YOU & GET THE FUCK AWAY FROM ME, I"LL COME GET YOU WHEN I'M READY TO TALK"
A few seconds later my neighbor walked up to me & said "DAMN, your right, I don't know Trina" he was good friends with her next older sister & her husband, he knew her brother-in-law since elementary school, he only knew us for the 2-1/2 years since we moved in, by the way, she was the youngest of 4 girls, everyone who grew up with her & her sisters still tell me to this day I got the best one which I knew within 2 years of meeting her

After around 15 to 20 minutes she walked up to me & gave me a great big hug, once everything was safe, the fire chief escorted us thru the house so we wouldn't fall thru the floor & into the basement so we could get a few things we might need like my wallet, keys & a pair of close since I was in shorts (not quit boxers but close) & a T-shirt
We stayed at my parents that night, I got my shower, I washed the clothes I grabbed 6 times & still couldn't get the smell of smoke out
I also called our home owners insurance agent to leave a message on his machine as to what had happened, it was 3 am, he called me back 3 minutes later, met us at our house & cut us a check for $1000 so we could buy clothes & get anything else we needed

What a day that was

It's raining like hell today, roads are flooded, including part of 101. A branch from a Bay tree dropped onto a neighbor's shed. On a happier kitty story note... Our old house was next to a 300 Acre agricultural preserve, complete with a few cattle, three rescued mustangs, wild turkeys, an occasional coyote, and once, a young mountain lion. At the base of a large hill were two large meadows separated by a rocky finger and boarded by a small creek. Along the meadow side of the creek grew numerous blackberries. As I helped take care of the owner's fire road near our house, he let us walk our dogs there, play in the creek and pick berries.
We had two dogs, Flash, a Golden Retriever, and Blue, a rescued Blue Healer. Our little household was rounded out with a pair of big grey cats, Dash & Curious, brothers adopted from the same litter. All four had been raised together.
So, one beautiful afternoon I was in the farther of the two meadows picking berries with Flash and Blue keeping me company. Flash had wondered out away from me and suddenly let out a bark at something hidden from my sight by the berry bushes. She was good with the cattle and horses, but when she took off running I dropped my berry bucket and ran to out into the meadow. Curious was fast coming at us through the foot tall grass. This was the first time I'd even seem a cat actually in a dead run. In hot pursuit a few yards behind our cat were a pair of wild turkeys, wings tucked against their bodies, also running flat out. Seeing these big birds like this, their dark bodies bobbing side to side as they ran was also a first for me. As Flash passed her oncoming friend, the turkeys noticed her, suddenly took wing, flying over us and flapping to the safety of a nearby oak. While Flash made a half-hearted attempt to follow the turkeys, a panting and wheezing Curious stopped at my feet. I don't think he appreciated my laughing.

Anytime you want. Once the weather lets up a bit, I'll be continuing on fixing up what was an outside 'bedroom/living space for the prior owner's two boys. Built in the late sixties, it's a ten by 14' building which needs a lot of attention. We took out the old wood stove, and will replace the teeny bath/kitchen. Should be a good guest spot. If all else fails, we have a spare sewing room/bedroom.
Out here a lot of houses sprung from tiny cabins and tent platforms built in the early to mid-nineteen hundreds. Our place began in 1929 as a one room cabin, which is now the living room.

Yeah, he is more full of himself than ever. Pretty much the ringleader of the Brat Pack, a half dozen of the youngest rescues that spend a lot of time in a group running all over the place and bothering the older horses. That is the Pack waiting to see what he is going to do next. He has outgrown his baby colors and looks like he will probably color out about where he is now.

With the price you have to pay these days, the vet could probably buy a new car!

Went to a doctor a few months back, had a brand new AMG out in the lot.

I'll add that to the list of suggestions. As a rescue we tend to wait a bit before a final pick in case someone makes a decent sized donation we can ask them if they would like to name the newest rescue.
