Default Exhaust inquiry
Re:: How much heat is too much?

So, I'm in the process of building a kustom exhaust on my car, and was thinking about running one of the tubes on either side relatively close to the carbs... If I were to use header wrap on them, would that hold in enough heat to keep it from overheating the carbs?

I've already tacked it together on the stand twice and deduced it was first too close to the trans mount, and then headed straight into the axle when the car is jacked up. So I got smart and put the engine in the car to get a better idea of where it needs to go.

Thanks in advance!

Fair enough... I'll sort it out underneath somehow. Thanks!

The exhaust I have on my V-Rod now is purty close to the manifolds & carbs, I'd say there is maybe 1/2 an inch between them, the right side I had the put a few dents in the header tube so it wasn't touching, I don't have any header wrap on them, but it does help keep the carbs warm since there aren't any heat riser tubes, but I suppose that the short manifolds keep the carbs from icing up
Back when I bought & put a progressive 2 barrele carb on by Bug in 1986 they didn't have any heat riser tubes, so I just went without until they got them in, I had the worst problem with the carb icing up, I fixed it temporarily by wrapping a thick piece of copper wire around the exhaust pipe & then around the manifold just under the carb where the heat riser tubes go into the manifold

As long as the exhaust pipes aren't touching you should be ok, you may be able to get an idea how close mine are if you look at the pictures in post #5 in THIS thread, like I said I just walked out & looked, there is maybe 1/2 inch between the carb & manifold & exhaust pipe, I have had that exhaust on it for at least 2 of the 3 years I have been driving it with no problems

I can get some better pics tomorrow showing exactly how much space is between them if you need it

Holy hell! That is close! Guess it wouldn't make that big a difference then... But, I think I figured it out. And it's actually really similar to my first attempt.

Nah, I wish I had a mandrel bender... Bought the bends from a local exhaust supplier.

Stay tuned for the finished product, it's gonna be wild to say the least.
