What about going real traditional "slead" and going with fenderskirts? Fab up some skirts that cover pretty much your whole area there... trim out the fender well around your wheelwell and cover it with the removable skirts...
You could even make the "bubble" area into the skirts.
Just form them a little more convex in the front and in the wheel well area.?

I'll search for a few pics to give you an idea of what I mean.

joel
I considered fender skirts, but I don't want the seam between the skirt and the fender. It would make some things (like changing a tire) easier, but doesn't give me the look I am after.

I agree. Here is a quickee rendering to remove all the different patch panel colors and lines. And I went ahead and slammed it properly too.

Yeah, I don't know if it will end up black in the end. I ahve played around with lots of color schemes. Won't have to make that decision for awhile. Still lots of metal work to be done.

Trying to make sure I don't fall victim to the CBoM curse, I went out and spent a few hours with Jane tonight.

I got the relief cuts in the fender bump welded back together and the bump and fender trimed to fit and then I got the bump tacked in place. Looks like it is going to work good.

Will try to get it fully welded tomorrow and start on the new fender lip detail.

Just a quick update (sorry no pictures). I managed to get an hour and half working on the sled yesterday. Got the new rear fender bump just about fully welded and most of the welds ground down. I have some hammer and dolly work to do to tweak the surfaces some, but it is looking good.

I also managed to jam up the tip of my welder. Took it apart and cleaned the tip up. I found a 1" long of loose welding wire in the tube feeding the tip. Wonder how long that has been in there. Took it out and put the gun back together. Wire feeds much better now.

My welds don't look a whole lot better, however.

OK, some more new stuff fabricated today and yesterday evening.....and with pictures this time.

If you remember, I am moving the engine cooling air inlet from the fenders to the rear cowl between the back window and the decklid. This area of the car started out the weekend as a large hole...

I made a hammer-form to shape a flange on some sheet metal...

Clamped a trimmed up piece of sheet steel to the hammer-form...

and preceeded to shape the flange over the hammer-form with lots of blows from the body hammer...

Took the clamps off and have a roughed in part that fits pretty decent, but doesn't have the right curvature to follow the cowl area when looking from the rear of the car...

So I borrowed a buddy's shrinker/stretcher...

What a cool piece of metal working equipment.

A little bit of shrinking of the newly-formed flange and I pulled just enough arch in the part to match the rear cowl...

And a couple more shots of the two pieces.

Need to trim them up and get them welded in, but I am liking it so far.

I love what you did with the rear lid. This project is what inspired/motivated me to start cutting up my fastback. Keep up the amazing work.

That hole is going to be the new cooling air inlet for the engine. I need to build the inner air and water management ducting to get from that opening to the existing duct work in the inner fenders and rear apron.

I am going to carve up some foam "teeth" and then cast a bunch of them in urethane so that they can be chrome plated and spaced across the opening. Sort of like this....

Looks good John. Since you can still take the rear fenders off, it'll make life easier for building your cooling duct. I don't know if you're planning on building it like a Notch, but you could go that route, then blast an opening into the inner side panel, allowing the air to dump into the existing air intake. Then you could cap off the opening inside the fender, to seal that portion of the ductwork. If you were to do this, you'd really only need to build a tapered "C" channel to make it work.

If this sounds a little thought out, it's because I had thought about puting my Notch's roof assembly on my Roadster, then adding in the rear fold down rear seat to it. Of course, that was before I started the rebuilding process.

That is pretty much what I am thinking for the ducting under the air intake opening. On the driver's side I already have the access hole for the FI brain. Just need something similar on the other side.

I did manage to spend some time with the Sled this weekend. I got the driver's rear fender just about fully welded up (was only tacked together until now) and started trying to work out the transition from the quarter panel top to the roof and rear cowl and rear fender. Still not sure what this is going to look like. It is a little funky around there.

Going to have to look a little more closely at the way it was done on a Notch.
