Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
A family favorite, perfected over years of Oktoberfests!
German Spaetzle:
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
4 eggs
1 cup milk (maybe a tiny bit more if it's too tough to mix)
plenty of BUTTER (not margarine!)
spaetzle maker - you can also use a food mill, collander (w/at least 1/4" holes), or food mill
Beat the eggs in a bowl (just so they're mixed...no froth or anything). Combine flour, salt, nutmeg, milk, and add in beaten eggs. It helps if you have a mixer...this is a pretty tough dough. Once it's thoroughly mixed, let it set for 10-15mins.
Over a big pot of boiling water, put the dough into the spaetzle maker and turn/slide it (depends on what kind of maker you got). Let them boil a couple minutes. Be sure to stir down to the bottom when you initially put them in so none stick to the bottom! Once they start floating to the top, they're done. Do them in batches so they don't get overcooked. Put the drained batches in whatever you're serving in.
While you're doing the spaetzle, you should have butter browning in a seperate pan. It's easiest in a smaller pan, doing about 1 tablespoon at time.
Pour the butter over the spaetzle. How much butter you want is up to your discretion, but I'm a big butter fan!
It works as an excellent base if you want to saute veggies, melt cheese, have sausages...pretty much whatever.

I can never go wrong with a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich with potato chips between the pb&j.
It's just as tasty as dipping french fries in a chocolate milkshake

Chili
Buy one of those little brown bag chili kits at the store, but substitute beer and whiskey for water in the recipe. Mighty tastey

Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
Wow, everytime I make food with greasy hands I think about a Volksrodder cook book. I'm single so I don't get the luxury of having a chick make me food. I ate out last year and it make me puke for 3 days and have non-stop runs so I only eat at home now.
I hate doing dishes.
I'll post my next creation.

That reminds me of a trick I learned at Red Robin. In yer make-at-home BBQ cheeseburger, add a layer of those dried onion rings that come in a can (usually only seen on top of a green bean casserole at Thanksgiving). Adds crunch plus the cooked onion flavor!

Miracle Whip on BOTH SIDES OF BOTH PIECES OF BREAD is the way my family always made grilled cheese sandwiches - MW on both of the bread insides (next to the cheese slice), and on the outside of the sandwich, browned in a skillet.

Of course, my mom also made a salad by chopping iceberg lettuce (like it was cabbage for cole slaw), and then stirring in enough Miracle Whip to make it hang together . . . .

Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
I've discovered recently through a patented process of combining whatever food i happen to own at the moment, a not so bad tasting snack...
what you need:
pop tarts
clam chowder OR top ramen
cook the soup like normal and dip the pop tarts in it. Ta-Da!
if you use top ramen, peanut butter sandwichs' are AWESOME with the beef flavor!

Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
Hmm... reaching back to my single dayz...
1 package Italian sausage or 1 package hot dog size kielbasas
enough rolls for 1 per sausage
1-2 big onions
1 slice American cheese per sausage
sliced dill pickles
some Worcestershire sauce
-- Drop the sausages in a big skillet over medium heat. push to outer edges of pan
-- slice the onion and drop into middle, sprinkle with Worcestershire sauce and cover with a lid
-- flip sausages and onions every once in a while so they don't burn, until onions brown and sausages are done
-- open rolls like a hotdog bun, add pickles, american cheese, onions and sausages
Makes a mean sammich. Add your favorite bottle of beer and get back to work. Chips are an optional addition if you have a piece of workbench to set them on.

Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
OK this is what my family always had INSTEAD of sloppy joe's. This is a recipe that my dad got from campbells soup in the late 60's. It's called Saturday Evening Spread. It is so super stupid simple that I was able to make it for the group home I used to live in as my 1 meal a week that we each prepared.
Ingredients:
1 Lb. ground beef
1 tbsp mustard
1tbsp ketchup
1 can Chicken Gumbo soup unprepared
enough hamburger buns so you can serve it to anyone who wants some
Directions:
Brown th ground beef in a large pan. The original recipe says to drain and add water but I like getting ground beef that isn't fatty so I leave that step out and the "drippings" in ( so I live dangerously, but I'm thin so I can be dangerous in that way). then into the pan you put 1 heaping tablespoon each of mustard and ketchup. The next to last step is opening the can and pouring it in. stir the stuff until there aren't any red or yellow streaks and the soup is evenly spread.
To serve just scoop "enough" on to one bun bottom, then place the top on top.
I must say that this recipe is simple and I haven't had a "Sloppy Joe" that was better in any way.
I get strange pleasure when certain varieties of campbells soup go on sale for $0.37 a can. with the mustard and ketchup already in my fridge and the 4lbs of prepackaged lean ground beef. that all combines to a bunch of cheap dinners and lunches. it's good on things instead of chilli too! Like chilli dogs or omelette's. It is one of the few things I know how to make and be overtly open about how it is used. I like it however it is served. as a sandwich, in an omelet, on another sandwich, on fries as a side dish, in cheesy soup but not as any type of desert!

Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
We did something like that alot when I was a kid... but we used the vegetable beef soup instead of gumbo. We either had it on hamburger buns or over white rice... in the time it takes to make instant rice in the microwave, you can have this done and dinner's on -- we called it skillet stew.

Well, just finished one of the most absurd "meals" I've ever eaten in my life. Tattooed_pariah, you truly have some funky taste buds my brother! If and when I get that feeling to eat something strange, the ramen/pb sandwich will be at the top of the list.
Oh, just to let you know, it really wasn't all that bad!

haha, yea i guess i shoulda warned you that i got a sinus infection in high school and i never took care of it, so my sense of smell is pretty sketchy at times, and we all know that smell affects your sense of taste....
sadly enough though, i actually really kinda like the ramen/pb sandwich thing..

Re: Volksrodder Meals - real recipes for cutters, welders, and drivers
Well.....here is an easy one that we love in our house.
What you need: Package of Turkey Cheddar wurst and package of the big cresent rolls (6 in a package).
Pre-heat the oven to 375. Separate the cresent rolls. Roll up one cheddarwurst in each of the cresents and place them on a greased baking sheet. Bake for 10 minutes on one side, turn them over and bake them for 8 minutes on the other side. Enjoy with any side that you want!!

The recipe for wienerschnitzel chili is:
Well, if I told you I'd have to kill you.
