Default OT; Central Air Unit
Re:: problems

Guys on here know all kinds of things so I thought someone may know where to start.

Really hot humid day. First one in a while.
I noticed it was warm in the house when I came in, so I went into the garage and that was running, I went outside and the fan was not turning on the outside unit. I went and flipped the circuit breaker off. The fan was really hot and was not running, it does, however turn by hand. The compressor does not seem to be starting, do they make noise? It was warm, when I turned it off my buddy said it rocked back a little like it was kinda stuck.
It hums but does not make any other noise. Any guesses? I took the fan off, I am going to have it checked tomorrow. Does this mean a new compressor? How much? This one is not more than a few years old....Can I get a good used one? I appreciate any thoughts on this!

Warranty? Could be a host of things to be honest. My trane went through three control boards. Compressor would never start. Finally got one with some kind of upgrade don't remember what exactly kept going bad. Sounds like a good place to start checking the fan motor if it was hot hot and not turning.

My guess would be that the outdoor fan or capacitor are bad. The fact that you can turn it by hand doesn't mean the motor is okay. It could bind up when energized, either because the windings are bad, the capacitor is bad, or the bearings are bad. The motor has a little up and down (or in and out) movement normally but sometimes when one of the bearings has dried out or gone bad it may still bind when energized but seem to spin freely otherwise. If it's the fan then the compressor would run for a while and then shut off on internal overload, basically a little thermal switch to protect itself. If you get up in the a.m. and turn it on and the compressor starts up but the fan doesn't then the fan's your problem.

Of course there could be something else going on, but I'm troubleshooting your problem without being there. The fan's the most common failure I would say. Compressors are more sturdy for the most part.

Thanks for the info! I am going to go and have an electrical shop try the fan out for me. If that works, I am going to get a new capacitor and try one. The internet is SOOO handy. Saved me a bundle on a service call...Thanks~!

did the old capacitor look like an expanded soda can?

thats the easiest way to problem solve those things.

Great! Glad it was the cheapest of the things that could be wrong.

Good deal. Glad it was a cheap fix. Hope you got it back up and running today. The AC always seems to take a dump on the hottest day of the year. Muther fuckker it was hot here today. 97 and 85% humidity suuuuucks! it's still 87 degrees at 10:00
