Default So how much will it cost me to build a volksrod??

Hi Everybody

So I am still trying to find something to turn into a project and even put a wanted ad on the local Craigslist looking for a VW project and still nothing is really hitting me. been on 3 or 4 wild goose changes to look at over priced rotted flintstone type vehicles. Finally found one but now the fellow wont return my calls so I take that as he doesnt wanna sell it now...so I am back to seeing $3000.00 to $7000.00 Baja type bugs and some survivors that are about the same price range...

So I have a budget in my head of what one of these things will cost me to build....I can do suspension replacement work and I can cut and weld and grind pretty well too....but when it comes to rotating assemblies I am not good at.....I can replace motors and trannys but as far as opening them up and looking inside...I am dumb as dirt...

So how much are you guys and gals spending on these Volksrods??

Any insight would be greatly appreciated...

MikeC

Hi Unkl Ian

Right now I would like an affordable vintage Volkswagen Beetle that runs and drives...then if I wanna get crazy and pull fenders off I can do it...but keep it drive-able as much as possible. I work alone and I don't have any "buddies" to help me out in the shop....so keeping a project moveable is key...I am currently rebuilding a 1952 Chevy 1 ton and I gotta tell you the wife and I can barely get it moved around alone...

Not too keen on the Super Beetle thing...had one in 1979...was not a very cool vehicle at all...

Not sure what look yet...I would really wanna build a oval track mini-stock type vehicle...numbers on the doors...some dents too...nerf bars...full cage etc etc..

Motor wise...something good on gas...

wheels...maybe white spoke steel ones...

I dont scrounge at all....I search the local Craigslist and thats about it...I work 6 days a week...I don't have time to scrounge ...

I always was intrigued by the guys on here as they seem to build low buck stuff but just getting something I can work with is gonna be in the thousands of dollars...

Thanks for all the insight...you guys are great on here

Between $200.00 - $20.000.00. When I first got mine on the road, I had around $1500,00 in it with a stock 1600cc. Thats counting new floor pans, new tires, all new brakes ect...

Hey Timbo

That is what I was hoping for (that $1500 number)when I first came back to this site back last summer...but darn...those vintage VW's are fetching some serious $$$$ for sure...

How many years ago did you build your ride???

I sold everything that was boring to me last summer and fall in hopes of getting a cheaper ride......hmmmmm....gonna have to rethink this hobby again...

I guess if wanna play I gotta pay huh???

If anybody else wants chime in....I am all ears...

MikeC...:)

If you have the time, roam your area. I find VW's in fields and behind barns, usually in poor shape but usually for sale for a few hundred bucks. Don't be shy about knocking on farmers' doors to ask about any you see parked there.

I've bought $200 cars that drove, that way. But the down side is, that's also one of the cars I drove home, that caught fire along the way due to miswiring.

In general - later cars are cheaper than early for similar condition. I REALLY am not into cutting up a solid early car, but you do what you want. But keep in mind that once you get past "daily driving" and want to modify, you can backdate a car pretty easily (i.e. early fenders, remove dash pad, etc. I recently sold a pretty sold drivable 70 bug for $1500. BUT before you start cutting a car, make sure you have your budget figured out to make sure you can pull it off. As you saw on the classified, theres more that a few abandoned projects out there.

Ah, I remember having a budget and surpassing it a long time ago. I am getting into the final stages now and the biggest costs left are the glass and to get it registered. You forget to account for welding gas, wire, cutting/grinding wheels, sandpaper, paint, etc. Those add up fast, plus something always breaks and you make changes along the way. The air suspension was a HUGE set back for me, also adding suicide doors, removing a body seam and other things I wouldn't do again. If I would of stuck to the "origional" plan it would have been done by now. Just my two cents.
