great work man...
can you still take the tire off the drum where you lowered the fender line? I know it gets really tight on the buses whe lowered.

With the way it is right now...no way!
I started noodling around with a couple of ideas to address this issue after see some of the Lead Sled pics that were posted today. I am going to do a few sketches. WIll post them up later.
If they don't end up working for me.....there is always fix-a-flat.

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
john, put a piano hinge on the belt line of the rear fender, then hide it with early wide trim!

Piano hinges only work if they're flat...

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
OK...here is my concept to fix the rear tire/wheel access and clearance issue. Cut a curved wedge out of the lower half of the fender in front of the wheel arch. Hammer form a filler panel that has a radius on the outside so that the lower rear portion of the fender blends into the filler panel. The inner forward edge of the filler panel meets the fender at close to a 90 degree angle. Kind of hard to explain.
This will move the lower rear of the fender out a couple of inches at the bottom giving me some clearance. It will also give me an additional bodyline detail that I can accent with the chrome trim.
Something like this......
Yes? No? Let me know what you think.

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
Will it just be a "bump" ala '54 Chevy style,
or will it have functional venting? Either way I'm feeling them.

Just a bodyline/bump. The functional vents will be on the cowl between the rear window and the decklid.

A quick fix if you want to leave the Fender skirt..... Unbolt the fender when the time comes to remove the Wheel!

Only if the fender still unbolts. I am not sure that it will when I am all done with the mods. Maybe.
Anyway......I really liked the concept drawing I did last night so I thought I would play around tonight with making a patch panel for the extra bodyline.
I started out with a flat piece cut out of an old hood. After laying out the shape of the bump I started hammering it over a couple of different body dollies clamped in my vice. A few relief cuts and lots of hammering later, I ended up with this...
I was liking it and it didn't take as long to form as I thought it would, so I laid out some cuts on the fender and got out the cut-off wheel...
then I clamped the patch panel in place...
I have lots of triming and fitting to still do before I weld it in place, but I am liking the look of it. And it really does help with my fender to tire clearance issue...

Before this change, the back of the fender opening was tight against the tire. Now I have a couple of inches of clearance.

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
Now you need to get it done so you can DRIVE it to Steve Meet IV next year. That would be cool.

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
The mods work. I like it better with the "bump out" than I did before, removes it further from the T3 look and more traditional sled. Nice!!

Actually, my goal is to be able to drive it to the 2008 Type 3 Invasion a year from now.
2008 Type 3 Invasion
Lots to do to make that goal, especially since I keep coming up with more modifications to do. ...... a year from now.

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
What would you think of leaning the bubble forward more at the top - so it's closer to parallel with the roofline - like this (or even more so)? Might need to be longer then, maybe even extending over the rear of the door a bit . . . .

It's probably easier to see the shape in person.
In the pics, the different colors throw the eye.

Re: Type 3 VolksRod
I was gonna ask, but I didn't get to it in time....
What about going real traditional "slead" and going with fenderskirts? Fab up some skirts that cover pretty much your whole area there... trim out the fender well around your wheelwell and cover it with the removable skirts...
You could even make the "bubble" area into the skirts.
Just form them a little more convex in the front and in the wheel well area.?
I'll search for a few pics to give you an idea of what I mean.
