How about something more subtle to accent the curves of your design rather than a Chevy shoebox side panel? The forward part of the side spear lays in the valley between the fender and the hood.

Hmmmmm....I kind'a like that! Maybe keep the trim going up on the top of the fins....I will have to mull this over.

Now that design works for me! Wasn't very fond of the '57 trim on there.

HELP!
My Idea: Have a pedestal rising straight up in front of the drivers seat, cradling a large, clear plastic ball (one of those that lights up with a moving lightening bolt that goes towards your fingers when you touch it would be best!) and when you roll the ball to the left or the right, it acts like a giant computer mouse and moves rollers, which would then turn the car to the left or the right! Voila! Space Age steering!

Your job: Tell me how to accomplish this!

Think of the way Dan Woods show rods like the Ice Truck had vertical steering columns in the 70's. Instead of a wheel at the top you could put a plasma ball, and build a pedestal around it.
The restored version of the Ice Truck uses a drag boat gearbox and a rack & pinion set up. I know it's not a "computer mouse" style but it would look (and work) uber-kool!!

hydraulics... yep. Along with electronics.

Use a mouse style setup. Or just fuck it, use a mouse.
Hook the motion pickup rollers and sensors up to servos on the hydraulics, or electric motors... whichever works best.

Kinda like the drive by wire joystick setups out today?

How about the ball attached to the column but have it work like a joystick. Would not have to rely on rollers, you move the stick left or right and have the valves for hydrolics being accuated at the bottom of the stick.

Some really good ideas.......but here is where I am an idiot! Is there a website I can go to to learn how to make this stuff work (ok...I KNOW there is website...I just don't know HOW to find it!)

It's official, someone on Volksrods is "reinventing the wheel" as it were. Cool concept, I'm sure with enough research you can make something like that, that will work and be safe. It sure would suck if a servo or whatever shorted and your car controlled itself, but then again tie-rods, pitman arms and such fail also.

Good Luck.

Being in the research lab at Ford and seeing what goes into making a car steer-by-wire, I wouldn't recommend this for the home mechanic...not even if you are Dean Kamen (Look it up.)

I would keep it simple and build a mechanical steering linkage with a vertical column. Mount a small diameter steering ring/wheel just below the glowing lightning ball. Use the ring to steer the car and the ball can then just be for appearance. With it lit up, you will hardly notice the ring below it.

Much safer and more practical than trying to do a back-yard mechanics steer-by-wire joystick/trackball deal.

Bonus points for the Dean Kamen mention.

There was an interview with him in a early issue of Make: magazine.
When ever I hear his name, I think of the "South Facing Chariot" he received as a gift.

Yesterday evening I cruised over to vwhabit's place and checked out Dub-n-Aireô in person. You guys can NOT believe how cool Markís car is in the flesh. I told him itís sculpture. Pure and simple. Heís done so much work to the Ghia, itís really amazing. Words and pics do not do it justice. It will be beyond anything else done to a VW when heís done.

For those of you that havenít seen Markís creations, he is an inspiration to me and others. His Rubber Chicken is a killer kustom as well. Everytime I see the Rubber Chicken, I see something new that I hadnít noticed before. Mark has been into VWs for a long, long, long time. He actually owned an import parts store here locally. I remember when I was in high school (maybe it was Jr. High...) and I saw his chopped oval (I think it was an oval) bug with a whale tail. Killer VW for sure. Mark is a legend in these parts. Iím not sure if he knows that. But almost every VW person around knows who he is that Iíve talked to.

While I was there, I bought a convertible Ghia sub section and a convertible Ghia top frame for my Ghia project. Thanks! One more piece to the puzzle.

And, I did this nasty burnout in Markís gravel by accident in my big Dodge diesel truck. And he wouldnít even let me sweep up his drive way. And, he didnít punch me in the nads! I swear, I would have swept up all the gravel/dirt for ya Mr. Gosson!!

Anyway, I just wanted to say that Mark is one of those very, very cool, and gracious VW people that Iím proud to know!

One of the more originals and looks to be started very well. The plasma steering would be awsome but they are uber fragile and a good sneeze would probably bust it. I was going to put a couple of the smaller ones in my dash for the Dr.Feakinstien effect but 4 kids 3 jobs 1 wife leaves very little time for play. Oh yeah 1 garden ,too.Fugga buncha weeds an' rocks. Tillin' sucks ,too. But back to the plasma-tron again great ideas and steps taken. Don't stop now!
