Re: Weird but Cool SH@#T To share
When I read floating anvil I was thinking it would be floating in water.
Where does one get that much mercury anyway? At the moment I can't think of any home uses of mercury especially that much, but then again I'm no chemistry scholar either
I saw something about floating in a sensory deprivation tank, I don't know how much water is in it but it has I think 1000 pounds of epson salts, looks pretty relaxing to me, I'd like to get one for myself, well make one since I can't afford to buy something like that
I'd bet an anvil would float in one
Ron

Re: Weird but Cool SH@#T To share
So far I have found one reference for a Gallon of Mercury priced at 3400 a gallon.... so it ain't cheap... I see it on Amazon for 159 for a 1/2 pound as well... takes a gallon of it to make 113 pounds... so 320 x 113 = $36K for the Amazon version... if purchased by the 1/2 pound...
Specific Gravity is 13. something... water has a Specific Gravity of 1.
8.4 pound per gallon... times roughly 13 = 109 wish... so likely a bit more since I know the mercury is more than 13 x the weight of water...

If the density of the mercury is twice that of the iron, and the anvil and hammer both float, why didn't HE float in the tub at the beginning?

You didn't see him testing it by kind of jumping up and down? His submerged portion was not enough to float him completely, all of his weight was centered on two feet, I suspect around 150 lbs or more (can't say as no reference for height given), but an anvil with about 2 percent submerged like his body would hit bottom and not float much either. Good question though.
Kind of like putting a wooden chair in 6 inches of water... It doesn't float due to weight/mass actually in the water.

That's a butt load of Mercury! I have a tiny amount somewhere around here. We used to roll it around in our hands back in the day and there's almost nothing nothing wrong...mmmm, what are we talking about again??
