Yeah, they might. I am imagining the peaks being the same basic shape as the peak on the center of the hood. Heck if I had a couple of extra hoods, I could section them out of the hoods and weld them on the fenders. Would be kind of like carving a tooth pick from a 2x4 though. I just replaced my ghia hood with a louvered one and have the stock one just laying around. It has a nice little peak running down the center. I can take my nibblers and cut it out in a few secs, slide it in a poster tube and mail it to ya. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] ...Seriously. Although its probably only long enough to do one fender and youll have to find another. Think about it and let me know

John, I've got a dented up Type 3 hood that is basically scrap for a resto, but the "wind break" on the center of the hood is good. If you need that section, let me know. It'd give me an excuse to get rid of it anyway. I can chop it up, just cover shipping on that center part.

Hey John, I've been watching your progress and I'm impressed. have you thought of using the headlight rings from a tri-5 with those buckets that you made? just a suggestion. you could PC them first and see what they look like.

Got some more done on the Lead Sled over the weekend. Just baby steps for now, but progress.
I welded in the patches for the gas filler door, the bumper divot, and the turn signal on the passenger side fender. Just have to weld in a patch panel on the inner reinforcement at the bottom rear edge of the fender and this one will be done for now. Sorry no fender peaks yet.
Then I tackled the hood emblem bump. I cut out the original bump, shaped and welded in a new piece to follow the contour of the hood. Then I formed a new section of curved hood peak and welded that to the new patch. I have a bit more welding to do to get it all filled in, but I like the way it looks.

what gauge sheetmetal are you using?? And would you recommomend thicker, or thinner or just what you got for filling in the lights, etc etc-JustinD

OK, I have been busy chopping and welding away on the Lead Sled. What do you think?

But it is pretty close to what I want to do with the car. I have a couple of ideas I would welcome feedback on. The first involves moving the body crease in the door and rear fender. Like this...
What do you all think? And how would you do it?
The second idea involves changing the proportions of the car some. I was out marking the car up and came up with this idea....
Basically I want to move the windshield forward to shorten the hood a little and lengthen the future rear deck. This idea is included in the PhotoShop concepts above. My idea is to trim the windshield frame and the upper cowl sheetmetal to just behind the vents. Then re-weld this piece on forward 2.5" or so. This moves the windshield forward and eliminates the vents. I would leave the dash were it is and fill the gap created with new metal. The door frames will be eliminated and the tops of the doors welded up. Fair weather car only. I would have the top of the hinge post to fill, reinforce, and reshape, but without worrying about side glass, I don't see it as a problem.
Would you chop the top first and then move the cowl or the other way around? Just curious what you all think.

John, I'm likeing the photoshoped pics. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wub.gif[/img] That thing should look sweet when completed. Getting rid of the leaky fresh air vents (to push the windsheild forward) is always a good idea. You might even be able to lay the windsheild back some to help get your roof line to flow smoothly. I had thought about doing this myself, but you'd need to cut the dash loose to keep from tipping it down too much. Not sure how you'd move the body line in the door, but the rear fender part shouldn't be too hard since you can remove them. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] Maybe John C. can give you some ideas on the doors. Keep the pics and ideas flowing though. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Dancing.gif[/img]

Changing the body line on the side would be difficult to do well,
both in terms of design,and workmanship.
If I was going to do it,I'd look at the lines of the '53 Buick side trim,
commonly used on Lead Sled Mercs.
And I'd suggest a complete custom dash,or adapt something else,
instead of modifying the stock piece.
My 2 cents.

The dash is going to be custom....I am cooking up some ideas for it already. I will have to sketch them up and see what everyone thinks.
Ok, some actual progress today....no more PhotoShop.
Started out with the Sawzall... [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Sawzallsmiley.gif[/img]
Then started filling in the top of the door. Got this far before running out of welding wire. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cry.gif[/img]
Going to get some wire on Tuesday and keep at it. In the meantime, I will have to keep using the Sawzall.. Started out wanting to see how tough it was going to be to move the windshiled forward. Maybe my first cut across the roof.
Then I cut across the a-pillar and cowl just behind the vents. Windshield frame was now free.
Slide it forward and clamp it on. It is stood up a little from stock.
This is what I have left to fill in the top of the hinge post.
And the gap to fill between the dash and the new cowl location.
Doesn't look too bad and I really like the look of the car with it forward and stood up a little.
Then I got really ambitious and decided to see what it will look like with the roof chopped 6" and slid forward a bunch. Measured up 6 inches and clamped on a guide bar and cut through the b and c pillars.[img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Sawzallsmiley.gif[/img]
Oops. It is narrower then the body unless it is on the old posts. Duh-Oh!
Then I cut the top 6 inches off the window frame and laid the roof in place.
Check out the visibility and headroom and making motor noises. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/funny.gif[/img]
The final shot showing the new profile of the car.
I am really liking the new proportions. The 6 inch chop is about perfect. Plenty of headroom and good visibility. Seat will need to be lowered from the stock position but that is OK. Moving the windhsield forward really helps the lines of the car....even if it is only a few inches.
I kind of like the look of the "visor" overhang. Might have to do something like that. I will be PhotoShopping a few of these pics to see what the car will look like when more complete.
What do you all think?

I was originally hoping to be able to use the windshield frame laid down for the rear window, but there is too much curvature in the bottom and it buldges up too much when you lay it down as much as I need too.
The stock rear window, cut down (plexiglass probably) will work just fine for my roof line.

No, stock hinges. It just clears the windshield. I hadn't thought of that, but just ran out and checked it it clears with a 1/2" to spare. phheewww!
