I don't think I will make the Bug-Out with the Lead Sled. I am not even sure I am going to make the Bug-Out this year. I think it is the same weekend that I am leaving for the Type 3 Invasion in Oregon. Unless the Bug-Out is on Saturday again this year. Might make it then, but not with the Sled.

My goal is to cruise Woodward with it in the middle of August during the Dream Cruise. It won't be done, but I hope to have it driveable.

You can always stop by the house in Dearborn and check it out.

WOW John, you've been very busy with your project (makes me feel like I've been slacking). Love what you're doing to it, and I can see you've been thinking ahead too. : ) Your cooling air intake set up is similar to how a Notch is laid out, except that I think you can set it up cleaner using parts of the old system (under the fenders), and build a duct under your grills for the air and water to enter. The bottom of the existing air boxes already have drains built into them. :O Have you figured out how you're going to "spring" the rear deck lid? You could use some donor parts from Jane1, and keep the VW torsion bars. Otherwise, you've got a little more work ahead of you.

Keep up the good work, and maybe I'll swing by after the VW Vintage Festival. : )

Dimmer switches are not made to handle the amount of amperage that a welder uses and is a potential fire in the making.Go to a electrical supply place and tell them what yuo need.You are risking major problems by using a dimmer switch.Better safe than sorry.

Got most of the rear package tray welded in today. Only have a small section at the top rear to finish up and some more welding on the seams.

I also spent Friday night at my buddy Glenn's place finishing up the machine work on the engine case for my 2.0L Type 3 motor for Sophy. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/Dancing.gif[/img] It is nice having friends with Bridgeports and lathes. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/funny.gif[/img]

I would have thought the same thing, but Scott Woodard did his whole radical rod with a dimmer switch on his cheapo welder without any problems. I used a metal electical box for the switch and it is welded to the cart I built for my welder. I don't expect any problems, but I will keep an eye on it. Thanks for the concern.

A little progress this weekend on the Lead Sled. I spent most of the weekend working on my Squareback, Sophy and getting my oldest son confirmed. Was a good weekend.

Here is the progress...

Get the last patch panel welded in on the package tray. A little more welding and grinding and it will be all set.

I also managed to shave the bump for the front license plate. Michigan doesn't require one.

And I started to fill in a little bit at the a-pillar. You can sort of see the filler panel/reinforcement at the back edge of the pillar on the lower 1/3. I will continue that shape all the way to the roof.

I am adding an extra "L" section to smooth out the back edge of the pillar. This will act as my reinforcement. I considered radiusing the bottom rear corner into the door, but it didn't look right when I mocked it up. I want to keep a sharp corner between the top of the door surface and the A-pillar.

Since I will have a roof attached to the top of the windshield (unlike some people I know [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img] ), I will need less reinforcement than otherwise.

Just a question about the lights. Are you going to slide the stock trim ring under the eyebrows? Or french them further in?

Stock headlights will be mounted recessed back a little bit from stock and then concave beauty rings wil be used to trim out between the headlight lenses and the fender.

Kind of like this.

Just Photoshop, but you get the idea.

Hey Matt... what you want are '52-'54 Mercury headlight rings. That's what most customs are running for that frenched-in look. Most of the rod n kustom parts places sell them.

Headlight rings on Night Prowlers (look about halfway down on the right)

Late '70s Chrysler Cordoba(sp?) had nice chrome trim rings,
suitable for frenching headlights.

Finally got a break in the weather and got Sophy's new interior in, so I can get back to the Lead Sled. Made a little progress today. I got the outer filler panel welded into the roof rail area above the doors on both sides. Will add the inner pieces tomorrow after the Michigan Vintage VW show and I will be one step closer to getting the roof welded back on. Here are a couple of pics.

You can see how much I moved the roof forward from these since the back of the filler patch is where the b-pillar used to be. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]

love the idear. had a thaught for you.. I could totally see putting about a 30 degree rake on the taillightsn lean em forward a good bit ya know? then fill in the lower are below the taillights to continuue the longer angled rake, move the bumper out , and add a continental kit!:)

Wow man, the lines of this car are really starting to come together! The roof looks awesome [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbsup.gif[/img] I think Fonzy is on to something with the tail lights too. They don't need much, just lay them down about an inch or so at the top to flow with the line of the c-pillar. Either way it's looking killer! I can't wait to see it lowered (photoshop anyone? [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif[/img] ).

Not sure about the tailights yet. Definitely won't have a continental kit on it. Have never cared for them.
