Well. Here goes every thing. My '67 bug and I received our nic-names the first time we showed at a local club night. All I could manage to say was "Nice ta meatcha" Then some one actually looked under my bug and said as loud as possible "watch out when you work on dudes car it'll grind you up" This is actually kinda funny 'cause I ground up a squrill that day with the 200 or so sheet metal screws sticking out the bottom. Hence "Meat/Grinder".

Thank you in advance for any help you give weather I need it or not.

The car was "running when I bought it but the floor dropped outta that dream pretty quick. Some P/O tried to hide a badly damaged pan with some asphalt shingle and sealing putty with the busted up street sign to hold every thing down under the carpeting. on the way home from work one night the driver seat ended up on the pavement at 50 or so leaving a great deal of sparkage (I needed new shorts) so the car sat for a few weeks or so 'till I could get new pan halves.

Then I got the letter from the "man". Saying fix it or we tow it. I don't like those dudes at all. But necessity is the mothe of invention, as is said.

Pans in hand, mostly in part to family, but no welder and 5 days 'till it gets towed ........

Neighbor hands me a caulking gun looking thing and some tubes of glue like stuff. Said some thing like " it should do" and walked away like nothing happened.

I had punched out holes to weld the pan in but could not get a welder to do the work. so I ground off the weld through primer and squeeeeeeeeeeezed out this stuff that looked like pep-to and smelled like the south end of a mule. Mashed the pan in and down and let loose with the screw gun. I did, yes before you think that I didn't. I put a screw in each and every punched out hold I had made. There for the little furry critters stand no chance if they get under the Grinder.

O.K. there is the back story 'bout the nic-name.

Here is the current standing of the Grinder....
Eng. 1915,
engle 110 cam,
stock (ish) heads,
1 5/8 merged comp header, mondo muffler or stinger,
full flowed case high out put pump,
filter and now exploded 48 pass oil cooler,
tires 215/70 rear 185/65 front
suspension rear stock wide 5, front slammed narrowed spindled disk ed
paint faded pealing black over years of bad paint jobs ( with custom hack and keying from angry dude)
interior yup it used to seat 4 now only 3 ( pass. side did not have seat rails, discounted price) rear custom covered in denim ( looked good when I made it but has since faded to glory)

Crud i rambled. As for me,employed, 36, divorced, 2 kids,2 cats, hobby fabricator furniture builder wood turner ( aka melter of expensive metal things, fixer of broken things, maker of wooden pens) love my bug as much as my kids, avid bowler. and general noob to all things Volksroding. Hoping to turn a ratty bug into a rat rod.

Thanks to a small bonus from work. I've got parts on order. All should be in on Thursday.

shopped list....

72 pass oil cooler kit.
12 feet of hose for said kit.
comp-fired dis kit.
3 feet gas line and tank filter screen.
bypass plate for old dog house cooler.
8 inch beam extender found at random stop at little junk yard.
wiper motor motor and bracket.
not toooooo much.
Finding lost set of keys for the project car -priceless-

Hey, just wanted to keep in touch with every one. Had a minor set back, after I got all the parts, I had to go for some minor surgery. Well the bandaids are off and I hope to get started soon. I hope to start Saturday in the afternoon. here is the starting pic of the grinder. Yes, I did. put that sticker there. Yes it did make some folks grumpy as hell, while others just nodded.

Update.......

Pulled the motor, thanks to my sis for the morale support, found more oil outside than in. s**t. Yup oil cooler busted and parcel tray all buggered up.. Going to mod the floor of parcel area to allow for removable panel.. Will take many pics of that.

Hoping that I will have more time to work on bug, as I am going to be working the second shift 3-mid night, soon.

Sorry about the delay in posting

. I have not been working on the bug these last few weeks, as I have had to concentrate on kids and work and other life like stuff.

Starting Monday, I will be working evenings. Which meens more day light to work the Grinder.

Hey, how about that. Change schedules at work and Lo and behold. Stuff get done.

Well i will try to post pictures later, when I can get them off the phone

So far, I have removed rear fenders. Kinda layed out some lines to cut some of the wheel well out. Got the driver side done for the moment. Then had to stop for a bit, as I got a little excited and broke the one metal cutting blade on hand

. Going to have to stop at the hardware store.

So here are the pics. Going to make passenger side look like this also. Then there is the rotten parcel tray.

Not too sure what I want to end up with. Thinking ( here I go again ) that I might want to just cut the floor of the tray out and raise it up a few inches. Just in case I decide, in the future to do a trans raise.

If I do this, I would most likely make a removable panel or a piece of plexi for access and all that. As the oil cooler and filter are going to be mounted in this area.

More cuts to make and more pics to take.

Hey there, it has been too long.

this is so far,

cut the parcel shelf leaving some good material on the sides

the other view. going to add material around the opening to reinforce and make a more stable platform to mount oil cooler and filter. then going to close it all up leaving the bottom open. and make the top panel removable for access.

going to keep the rear apron after all, need a place to mount tail lights for now

the other side. going to weld in some tube along the arch to make it stronger. also going to rework the the center of the apron to clear the single stinger exhaust.

Well there it is so far.

So its been a while, with new job and all the other things that come with life. I will be honest, I haven't made much progress on the Grinder.

My 12 yo son on the other hand just received a '69 bug with extra parts and is completely stripped down to rolling pan and empty shell, lucky little feller.

Pictures and descriptions coming this weekend.

Ok, here are pics as promised.

I had originally wanted a frame to hold cooler and filter up and out of the way. Then cover the frame to seal end compartment from the passenger area.

The pic of the frame in the bug shows where it is mounted.

the pic on the bench shows the parts orientation.

More pics to come as I make a little more progress.

I have a 16ga panel to modify. This is going to be the cover (box) I was trying to shoot for. The added benefit of this, for me at least, is I will not have to get under the car to change the filter. The whole oil cooling system will be removable as an assembly without removing the engine.

ITS ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

With help from a good fiend, we were able to get the motor in and wired up. low and behold the damn thing just would not fire. spin spin spin, gas gas gas, air air air..........

By that time it was getting late and starting to get wet. Packed it in for the night. Ran out this morning to get a multi-meter.

Yup, you guessed it. My dumb ass, hooked up the wrong stinking wire. NO SPARKY-SPARKY.

Found the correct wire, the one that runs with the charging wires and the oil pressure sender wire, yea that one. Put a socket blade connector on it and fuel in the bowl.

VRRRRROOOOOOOOMMMMMMM, gotta love open headers first thing in the morning.

Even though I don't agree with my neighbors, I have to thank them a little. I really missed the smell and note of the exhaust from the Grinder..

Just because i could. I tore it all back down and installed the tin I have, fixed all the stripped out threads on the shroud and body hammered the fresh air side so the larger fan would fit ( well sorta fit, it no longer rubs), replaced all fuel lines, and installed a brass tee to send fuel to both carbs safely, Fixed some broken wires, and replaced connectors here and there. Last but not least found half a dozen other things that need to be fixed before I drive her too far from home.

Well here is the latest news.

The code enforcer has officially signed off on the cars. no more problems on that front.

The code enforcer got cranky about the garden and work table in the drive way. Guess you win some and loose some.

Found out the engine in the purple one, has not had spark plug inst. for at least 10 years or so. Yet the bugger turned over by hand.

Been working on other crud.. damn county codes..

Hoping to have oiling system buttoned up in Feb, fenders and running boards off as well.

But right at the moment trying to get sustainable garden built and planted.

I know off topic. but what ever. Life just gets in the way some times.

Long time no posty.

Life had gotten a little carried away with an over abundance of drama. We all get that from time to time. I just felt like a drama llama shepherd. Thankfully things seem to have calmed for the moment.

On the dark side of brighter news. The purple vw bug is no longer in the family. And the brighter side, the grinder is almost road worthy again.
