newbie in mexico

just got a 96 bug today, fuel injected, and needs some work but runs well. I litterally just got it in my driveway 30 min. ago and my wife could not get in in reverse so i have to check that out but my first question is what is the little lever beside the stick shift? I have been looking at all your projects and i would love to chop it but the wife says no, it is going to be our daily ride but we are painting it and doing some mods to it, i'll post pics when i can. I used to own a 1959 pontiac a couple years ago before i moved from canada to mexico so im not new to old cars, so this little bug should be fun.
