Default E-Volksrod (1974 Super Beetle)

Hi Fellow Volksrod Friends:

I could have sworn I already did an intro to myself and my project but just realized I posted it on www.thesamba.com. Oops!

My name is Ryan and I hail from the small Town of Los Gatos in California. About a year ago I sold a boat which allowed me to purchase a 1974 Super Beetle. My plan is to create an e-volksrod. Yes, my volksrod will be electric drive. Some of my electric components include an HPEVS AC-50 electric motor, Tesla/Smart Car battery system with power controlled by a Curtis motor controller. More details to follow as the build progresses. I might be the first to build a Volksrod that is electric and I am hopefully not the last to build one. I am a big fan of zero emissions and sh&t loads of torque.

I am new to cars and somewhat new to batteries and electric motors, etc. Part of the reason I went with the VW bug is that I have been told they are great cars to start with and just great cars overall. When I learned about Volksrods I fell in love with the look...so here I am today. I have since learned that I goofed a bit by purchasing a Super but have since gotten to know Doug Fuller. I am using one of Doug's 10" beam extenders on my build.

I am a father of two young kids and own my own business so finding time is pretty tough. I do enjoy every second in my little "garage".

I purchased the car in February 2016...had some back issues...now back at it when time permits. My brother-in-law Stuart is helping out along with some other friends that know a lot more than I do about high voltage systems...do not want to die doing my first build/conversion.

I also love to weld and cut things...I am a better grinder than welder at this point.

Before I go further I want to thank everyone in advance who has been down this path as a newbie and who is now willing to share their knowledge with the community. Big fan of forums and sharing knowledge.

Now for some photos of my build so far...hopefully I figured out this photo upload system:
