Re: purplemyth
he's been tinkering with the wiring, and a bunch of other lil need to do stuff.
And today he put it back together.
Still looking for another tank, he put this one up there but he'd have to do some modifying to get it to work right.
anyway, pic time.

Re: purplemyth
Will be picking this up from my Aunt's house hopefully this weekend, she said, ' just don't charge me for removal "
Hopefully won't take much to get it back to rd.

I know it's not a fav thing to most here but hey, free is free, and it is a vw based kit.

Re: purplemyth
It's HOME!!! took a weed eater and scared away any slithering critters, and got it loaded up and it's sitting in the drive way. Will unload it tomorrow and start cleaning it and picking it apart and making the list of things to repair,,,, which after looking at it after supper in the fading daylight, will be ALOT!!!!
But on the way home, got alot of head turners. Not something you see in this town, like the other oddities we drive, it'll be the only one or at least very unique.
Discussing it's paint scheme, after looking thru a couple of galleries, it may get the vrod touch, aw hell, flat black the sucker
If we don't do it to suit us, why bother?
Will post up some new cleaner pics later.
First thing though remove the gas tank and the nasty gas in side it, that smell makes me sick in minutes!
Aunt found the sales slip, they bought it used from a local car lot, in 96, and best guess, it has sat about 4 or 5 yrs. Was parked because Uncle said it just started acting up and no local vw shops to haul it to. So who knows, we may get real lucky and it needs a fine tuning. The rd before their house used to be a clay rd, now it's paved, clay can clogg up anything badly if not maintained properly.
Hubby said awhile ago, " I can see it now, Ma in a red bandana, big ol sunglasses on and a lil black dog sitting beside her with her lil ears flapping in the breeze just a tootlooing down the road~"
hahahaha not! it's a purple bandana

http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a71/crbugs143/MG/
all pics there, add more later. Found a website tdreplicas.com, going to post it's rebirth there so I can get feedback from other MG owners. This thing needs alot of detailing, the builder just slapped it together. details make the car. Too many to list.
Now as a soon as he quits playing around with his bike and unloads it I can go wash it off and throw out the carpet and other trash and then get it covered with a tarp. . Already bumping the 100* , not even 11am yet.
ugh~ summer.

Re: purplemyth
The boss will ask him tomorrow at work, ' so what did you do on your days off?"
Hubby~I brought it home, saturday, then I worked on the bikes the next 2 days. But in those 2 days, she gutted the toy!
Only thing he's done is with a glove on , check for nests in the fan shroud, and look at the rotor in the distributor, oh , and checked out what I was doing now and then.
If it weren't for having no title for the new frame, we'd just pick this thing up and reset it on that one, but then he'd also have to go thru the fun of relocating and cutting the shifter, he don't wanna go thru that.
I stripped the insides out, didn't yank the wires, he said leave those, who knows, may get lucky and the vdo gauges still work.
Did remove the chrome grill, it actually had 2 grills on it, on top of the one that is built into the nose, so you could say, it had 3 on it......
Took the headlights, lower lights and the mirrors off. Tag frame and reverse light too.
Oh, he did straighten the bumpers, by hand.
It's looking a bit bare now. I can't do much else now. Will call around for price on a sheet of steel for the floor.
I just wanted to get it cleaned out so it's ready to start.

more misc shots in the bucket
Now as soon as he finishes a bike~

Re: purplemyth
not much really to update. His Shadow runs, drives and stops, he figured out the wires. Drove a drill bit thru his finger while making a seat bracket. says the finger tip feels numb now. Well if he shattered the bone and twisted the nerves, it's gonna. Just as long as it doesn't turn black!
Kit still sits. Chiro reset me today, and weather cooling abit this weekend, I'll get the kid to tug the jack out there and lift it on blocks.
Engine hasn't been touched yet. b i k e.
Got a bit of interesting info from the kit site though.
this is bits from a post of a guy who has one like this.
Quote:
It looks to me that you have one of the original cars/kits that were made by Daytona Products out of Florida...Laverne was one of the owners....pretty sure they actually created the MiGi....I think Fibrefab bought them out...I have one that was first completed and registered in 1976....yep, 33 years ago!!! I have alot of the original brochures and assembly manual, etc. Consists of mainly pages that look like they were made on one of those old ink mimeograph machines if you remenber those! Some kits had just a 'glass grill shell, similar to yours, with no chrome.....The engine cover/spare tire holder is different on yours; I'll have to dig out the brochures and see if any are pictured like it...~~~....maybe its time I get my info on here somewhere and it could possibly be a help to you and others...there are a few older pics of mine posted in the photo gallery. Good luck with your project, I think the Daytona kits are some of the very first produced (not 100% sure) you may have a classic among kit cars!
|
I'm really hoping this is true. Not that would make it anymore valuable, cuz it's worn , and we plan to update it a bit. Most of the info I found are on the mg replicas and all others were in the late 70's and 80's. This is a 75. Just a cool thought though.
After looking at his pics, there are alot of lil things that are the same, things even different on other daytonas.
Well if anything else happens , I'll post.
edit 7/17/09
from the guy with papers
Quote:
Hello again! I found some of my info easily, working on the rest....I think I can scan most everything, but it may have a red stripe through it! Just a couple things for now....it wasn't Daytona Products, (the memory is going!) it was Daytona Automotive Fiberglass, Inc. 852-910 Carswell Ave. Holly Hill, FL 32017. LaVerne was the president and her husband started development of the molds etc in Nov. of 1974. He was a professional sprint car designer/builder/driver. They produced the first replica body in Feb. 1975 and she named it "MIGI". Later on they advertised it as using more donor VW parts than any other kit. It was in Dune Buggies & Hot VWs in Aug of 1976 & Car and Driver magazine in May of 1977. I've even got alot of original correspondence from LaVerne...I'll try to get all the stuff scanned....
|
Still very interesting since the id on this one is 1975.
May wind up naming this thing a mini mystery machine
no, I'm not painting it green with flowers

Re: purplemyth
To start with, the blonde in me finally woke up last night and realized the obviuos, Just because a copyright states 1975, that's no gaurantee it was made in 75,,, duh~
lil more history info the guys dug up from the td site. We all know the history of bugs, some may be interested in this too.

I was lucky enough to receive everything he received when he acquired it from the original builder. Thanks, LaVerne, for all the memories, busted knuckles, and good times I've had with my kids because you wanted an MG replica...may you rest in peace...

ok, I'll stop updating with history now~
but it is interesting to think your car may have been among the first of it's kind.
Now push this back to the bottom with some REAL work!
edit~7pm 7/18/09
More tid bits I have come across thru variuos searches.
Laverne wanted a MG roadster, like those in the UK, so she and her hubby, who built fg race cars , started these. Daytona MIGI or Daytona Auto Fiberglass , not sure which was first, contracted with 2 other companies in Daytona as they were selling many kits. A former sales counsultant says that the owner got into drugs and things went bad. No confirmation there. Bits of a lawsuit of one against the other , something about one doing biz without a lisc lawyer, so basically everything was bogus and default. The whole company was bought out by Fiberfab in the early 80's, I think~
But, I found prices in a popular sci mag, Nov 78. A kit alone was $1795, with a manual, or $4995 a complete ready to bolt to a frame, or +$400 and they'd drop it on a frame you bring to them.
But it's looking more and more that these cars are the foundation for the ones later built in the 80's.
Still don't know how to read the serial #'s on the firewall, and unless we find out that it is a prototype or a 'one of the firsts' we still plan on doing some mods and updateing in this. It's so weathered, I don't think it would even appeal to a collector. Don't know how many owners and it's been abused.
Anyways, figured I'd add this since it was still fresh in my notes~ might just write this up and keep it in the glove box if we go to shows. No where have I found a lengthy amount of history.

Re: purplemyth
IT LIVES!!!!
The MG lives!
He put in a fresh battery, a fuel can on top, a remote switch, adjusted the dist, two pumps of throttle and it fired right up!
up to 60 lbs oil, idles at 40 warm.
yeehaw! got an engine that runs!
so far !
edit~
well no need to bump this twice in one day, was just so excited about the Mg!
I have his shadow 2/3rds done.
After he does a lil repair strip on the lower edge (freakin internal water damage, gas seeping out on back edge. ) I have a design ready to go on the side, will fit the Shadow name of the bike. Maybe next weekend~

Re: purplemyth
Last weekend, dragon got another heart transplant, From the MG, and I'll tell ya, that stock 1600, if thats what it is, will haul ass! 75mph @ 3400rpm 3rd gear and it's barely straining, Amazing what a carb change can do.
Had a really cool day today.
Fatz-ga wanted some one to do an engine swap for him, so I made arrangements, he and hubby talked over the details and today he came up to the house, so I guess this would be a first unofficial PM mini meet
his intro~ http://www.volksrods.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23895
Some parts he wanted out of his garage , they'll get used somewhere I'm sure.
his chassis,
which they had planned to install the engine , but~
he didn't realize , he has an autostick~
After the two unloaded all that stuff, , naked engines look so lil don't they? Turns out it's a 7+yr old, never run, still on the original crate ,,,, GEX. Yes, we cringed, but he's done reading, and it's a 50/50 thing, some get good, some get bad.
After getting things swapped over, mostly things we already had in the cave, instead of fussing with such old rusty things from his other engine, only thing found questionable was a rocker with an open hole. Spot weld, done, on to fussing with the altenator. And a few hours later, it's dressed and ready to fire~
and once it fired up, ran thru a lil break in run, he was all smiles! It sounds great, good oil press, no rattle, just sat and purred like it should~
But the engine didn't get installed, instead gave him a trans to use instead. So it was all loaded up after we had some dogs, chips, coleslaw and some beans, then he was on his way back home.
Hopefully he won't take a detour like he did getting here?
All in all, a very good day, this guy is really cool to have had over. Can't wait til he gets his vrod done up and maybe we can all meet up for a drive.
Hope ya made it home ok Jeff! Nice meetin ya!
For Jeff if you want to put some pics in your intro~

Re: purplemyth
New state law, tags must be visible flat, so that meant a new tag light needed, off the 60's rag and extended the seat so that meant moving the lights too.

And the original tank turned into junk so here bigger honda tank now installed.
will get spray bombed later.

Re: purplemyth
Wow, I haven't added anything here in a LONG time!
hmm well, his shadow got striped, then it decided to bust out in bottom edge rust, it's now my display tank~
Winter came, hunting season, big trucks got carb swaps.
Now the current project is getting crash10's lil baja up and running~
I help during the week when he comes over, hubby helps on sundays and mondays when he's home all day.
His pics are here~
Crash10's B
She aint pretty, and she's a bit bitchy at times, but that's all gonna change, getting the mechanical done first then ta bit of a makeover coming soon. Going back camo, but, I think she'll enjoy it

Re: purplemyth
Well he's back on the bike work.
This is what he was doing when the grinder exploded~
The shocks were laying too flat,(top pic) when he sat on it, the seat mounts would hit fender , the shocks just wouldn't hold right, so, off the old mounts came, he made extentions and welded those on. (bottom pic) Took 2 vw wheel studs, ran those thru from the back, welded those in, slid on shocks, and put vw lugs on the outside. More bug parts~
has turn lights on front now and cables run. Getting closer~
Still a shit load to do to it~

Re: purplemyth
It lives, it rolls, he almost died~ by ME!
a take off,
and the end

he was 6" from dieing
(also posted in the bikes thread)
Still needs front brakes and tires. He hooked up rear turn lights today. Also, now that it's almost done, he bought a bike/atv jack. It'll get used well in the near future since he is more than likely trading his shadow for an 01 grizzly atv , needs a bit of tinkering and this leaning down or sittin on the floor hurts our backs. I'll need it soon so I can paint my polaris

Re: purplemyth
Shadow might be going out tomorrow night, to another napa guy from Atlanta. Kid with ATV did the dealings, if so, hubby gets payoff with atv. He also sold the 400 from the stude we had yesterday, so that $ with the bike $, he can get tires. Then just resealing a fork strut, adjusting shocks, painting tank, polishing fenders , striping, inspection & tag and he can roll it.
Bout damn time~
Decided gt and other old buggy will get set out by front fence for sale, keeping mg. It needs a body off resto, but can be simple, ,,,,,,,,,,,,,, yeah right, nothing with us is every simple~~~~~~

9/7, POWER!
9/12
ceiling
9/13 walls insulated

my shadow, Sweetie pie
9/14 with some help from Crash

Re: purplemyth
this weekend's work.
sofa/bed frame
and bathroom plumbed
and since storms expected tonight and he had dragon perched in there, I bitched about not wanting flooded floors in the bay, so he finally dug out a peach tree stump and both dubs are covered :)

all for now, I start re facing cabinet doors tomorrow if it aint pouring down rain~

Re: purplemyth
Side sofa/bed was done a couple days ago, nice to nap on, I tested it yesterday
Front futon frame, done, cabinet faces, done, stove, burners work, gotta figure out what's up with oven, pilot light goes out when it gets to temp
I have some varnishing to do on front bed doors and he has to redo the water pipes to the hot water tank, seems they are busted. He hooked up water today and it fanned all over the place in the back Guess they got froze at some time, never seen pipes crack in a straight line full length~
But it's almost ready~ Gonna waterseal the floor, then just put carpet back in for now. Last major purchases are curtain material and a septic tank~
all for now~

Re: purplemyth
and the list keeps getting shorter :)
plumbing, fixed. toilet, fixed.
Tub, not til the rest of the rear gets rebuilt, next year~
but it's clean.

flooring, done,
bathroom door, done.
Tomorrow, I clean out more tools and start fitting extra padding to beds. And measure windows and see just how much fabric in yards I'm gonna need~
as soon as club figures out what the hell it's doing for power and if we even get to keep the 100acres the camp center is actually on, it's what determines when this will get hauled in. Already checking out a new club That crash leased last week, but he's unsure whether to put campers in this year . so it's now a hurry up and wait,,,,,,
But I'm going hunting whether camper is in or not

Re: purplemyth
well, long time no nothing here~
first, camper is in camp 20miles from here.
, next, a limb fell on it from the ice storm, busted a vent and dented the gutter, but it's fine for what we use it for, it's just a hunt camper:)
So, last month or so, Crash asks hubby one day, 'you want the 49panel?' Hubby just says uh, well, she actually wants ones, always has,,, why? "well it's ya'lls then or I'm hauling it to the crusher', So now it's ours.
I have wanted a panel since I was a teenager! Big, beefy and, just well BIG!
Here's the album, http://s9.photobucket.com/albums/a71...cpZZ1QQtppZZ24
When he brought it over 2 yrs ago.
today, hubby is a little bored. Dragon need new brakes, but seems some crooks decided to take a tote they were in along with a truckload of oil and other large items friday morning so, he decided, wth~
1/2 the junk inside, exhaust pipes
couple hours of using a 4x4 post and a jack, then a bit of hammering
much better
Not quite sure if we'll frame swap or just go thru the axles and make new. all depends on if he gets a 4x4 frame. Other wise, plans are to leave it a rat bomb. brace up the body so shit and falling off, new glass and seals, then just use it as a heavy hauler~
Just something new to tinker with

Re: purplemyth
so, last weekend he worked on the 49, today he decided to go after the bay....
he attempts to break it~
then he cuts chunks out of it
then he fusses and puts it back together again. A second time. Just had to get another inch~
as it sat before

as it sits now

tomorrow's job?
Taking it back apart and going back down a tooth.
"oh, I forgot, lift the rear the front springs up, now it's too high"
I can defiantly clear the creek with this~
Baja bay

Re: purplemyth
Now this is what it was

now it sits much better

first drive was interesting.
1, I can see out the back window now in the rear view mirror,
2, had to adjust my back rest so i didn't fall over the steering wheel,
3, it nose dives when you hit the brakes,
4, more adventurous on windy days
